It revolves around themes that, as a mother, are my worst nightmare. Your child runs away, they become addicted to drugs, they hang out with people who are dangerous to them, or will use them for what they need. This darkness pervades the entire book.
However, as with most novels, there is generally a light in the darkness and for Val, her light is found in a very unlikely place. I've always been a sucker for falling for what seems like the wrong man for you, but realizing he is exactly what you've always wanted type of book.
I think Black does a great job using descriptive prose, I felt the biggest downside to the book was in the character of Lolli, who I wonder will get any page time in the third book of the trilogy. I also felt that we didn't get Ravus fleshed out as much as I'd have liked.
All and all, a good escape into the dark world of faeries, deception and mystery. I couldn't put it down, which is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 3, because to me that counts for quite a lot. Black did a good job of luring me into her world and depriving me of sleep to be sure I found out what happens next. (less)

I know many of my friends have read it, so I didn't bother reading the book jacket.
Then I see it is a book about wolves and I had generally been very hesitant to read any wolf/human story because if I'm being perfectly honest, it creeps me out.
However given that so many of my friends loved this book, friends whose opinions I truly respect when it comes to books, I figured I'd give it a chance.
Well less than 24 hours after I started it, I'm already finished. So I eat my words and I'll fully admit, I loved it. I have already put a hold on the next book at the library.
The story was very well written and the emotion the author was able to portray was striking. Sam's capability for love was so evident through all of his thoughts. You wanted him to find that love.
It was a hauntingly beautiful book. I was connected to the characters of Grace and Sam instantly and I sat here enthralled page after page watching their story unfold.
To say I loved it would be an understatement. These characters are part of me now too. (less)

I think this will be a series that Zachary will enjoy in a year or two, I think it kept my interest from beginning to end. My only hesitation for letting him read it now, is that it is very dark at times and while I know he is fine with stuff like that, I'd rather he enjoy non-dark books for now.(less)
