Post-apocalyptic-type society. This book has adventure, romance, mystery/suspense, and some philosophy as well. I would definitely recommend it. Reads similar to Matched & Hunger Games, but I believe it to be MUCH better than Matched. (less)

If I were to rate the book solely on the author's creativity, imagination, and skill, I would have rated it a four; however, since I felt my skin crawl and my imagination sore to new heights of horror...I can only rate this book a three.
The truth is I liked it, but man is this book creepy. The ironic thing is that the book doesn't contain scenes of blood and gore. Nope...not at all. What it does contain is just enough scary details (such as long bone-like crimson red nails, dark hallways that feel and sound like a breathing living creature, and rats with yellow eyes and sharp teeth that sing scary songs)that you find yourself "filling in the gaps" within your own mind. On the other hand, the brave heroine of the story is very admirable simply because she starts off as an average every-day little girl who through her actions becomes courageous.
Lastly, here's a little excerpt from the author about the book:
"It was a story, I learned when people began to read it, that children experienced as an adventure, but which gave adults nightmares. It's the strangest book I've written, it took the longest time to write, and it's the book I'm proudest of."

Bottom line: Two innocent young men were murdered. The killer was manipulative, mentally unstable, and a compulsive liar. (There it is in a nutshell). (less)

For whatever reason I judged it as being boring...and let it sit on my dresser for two weeks untouched. As soon as I opened up the book and began reading, however, my opinions of the book altered drastically.
I love this book! It has drama, humor, suspense, and I feel as though I am a fly on the wall during the 1950's and 1960's while I read it. Especially interesting is the wit and humor of Evelyn Ryan. No matter what challenge or hardship her family faced, she remained calm and chose to have a positive attitude and a sense of humor.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read about an extraordinary woman, mother, wife, and contester. (less)

I enjoyed this version of Beauty and the Beast. The only criticism I have is that the ending happens very abruptly...and without a lot of details. I would have enjoyed it more had the author taken a little more time and produced a slightly more detailed account of the ending. Other than that, great quick read. (less)

Being that this is a non-fiction read, I was impressed that the author was able to keep my attention as well as keep the story interesting. She uses a narrative-type style to tell the story of Henrietta Lacks, which I really liked.
If you have never heard of HeLa, Henrietta Lacks, or cell culturization...I would give this book a try. Not only do you learn something, but you also find yourself entertained and curious to know more. (less)

It's an okay read, but I was actually able to put it down for a few days without feeling drawn to it (never a good sign for me that I am truly enjoying a book). I got tired of the overly dramatic cheesy poetry that Ky & Cassia constantly talk about or use to communicate their feelings. At first it was sort of sweet, but by the end of the book I was ready for them to stop.using.poetry.
The book also felt fairly predictable and anti-climatic. By this point, I am curious about what will happen between Cassia and Xander, but I will have no problem waiting for the next book to come out. When Hunger Games came out, I HAD to read the 3rd book as soon as it was available. I don't see myself feeling that way about the 3rd book in this series.

There were a few aspects of it, however, that annoyed me. For example, the main character (Mariah Aubrey) seems to be someone filled with a strong sense of virtue and common sense, and yet despite the author building Mariah up to be a strong, independent, sharp-witted young woman....she makes a really stupid decision in the beginning of the book that potentially taints the rest of her life and her possibilities for marriage.
I get that everyone makes mistakes. That's not what bothered me. What annoyed me was that Mariah seemed dumbly gullible compared to how smart and quick-witted she is throughout the rest of the book.
Other than that, I loved that each character had secrets that were eventually revealed by the end of the book. The mystery behind the characters kept me curious. I also loved the "Jane Austen feel" that this book has. (less)

Great plot, interesting characters, and clean. I appreciate when I can read an interesting book without having to personally censor every other sentence. I would highly recommend this read if you like books with adventure, romance, a little dose of religion, and some humor as well. Great book! (less)
