Vishous and Jane's journey in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.

Vishous and Jane's journey in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.
Vishous His depression and loneliness over his genius and abilities makes him more Human . Vishous is my number 2 favorite brother. I loved the look back into his past. We see him as a pretrans, though his change, and just after his change. Obviously, as a Brother, he has had a hard start. *Just once, give us a well adjusted brother. LOL! Not gonna happen, is it?* Vishous' back story only makes him that much more intriguing. The entire BDSM element adds a scorching twist to the story. His parentage makes complete sense in regards to his abilities, and completely took me by surprise. The Primal addition, while creepy, was an interesting development. For Vishous, fate sure is a wicked Bitch, as is his MOM!
Jane Jane is a brilliant human doctor who tends to our injured V. She is the perfect counterpart to Vishous. He needed a strong, intelligent female to hold his interests and she fits him perfectly. She has had her own life lessons that we get a look into through her back story. We are also introduced to her friend and Boss, Manny, adding an interesting view to the book. Lover Unbound causes many bawl worthy moments in relation to our female protagonist. I was shocked at the direction of the story flow and the impact it had on the entire series.
Cast of Characters Vishous, Jane, Phury, Rehvenge, Xhex, John Matthew, Manny, and the lessers. John Matthew's point of view has been pivotal throughout the series. Finally, we see him transition. I love the bond that Zsadist and John develop over their similar backgrounds, even though John doesn't know about Z., yet. I think I am most connected to John because he has his own storyline in each and every book, almost as if he is a third protagonist outside of the major couple showcased. I am not complaining. I LOVE John Matthew. He is by far the most developed character in the Black Dagger Brotherhood universe.
I am annoyed that Tohrment is still AWOL. We hear tidbits about him from the other characters, but his absence has caused me to not care what happens to the male. As brutal as that sounds, I feel that J. R. Ward should have done something in regards to him sooner. Show at least few lines in the story so that we don't forget him and get a chance to learn and hear his voice. It's almost as if she didn't know what to do with the male and left it hanging.
I see this as the first time we see the Scribe Virgin as a person, even as we see her beginning to fall apart. The Omega is her twin. We know nothing of their parentage, only that the twins are a delicate balance between good and evil. I wonder if their Father is also the Father in every major modern religion. Most likely...
As this series moves forwards with more characters it evolves into a intricate, twisted, delicious storyline. I hunger for any information I can feast my eyes on.
“Terrific. A bisexual dominant vampire with kidnapping expertise.”
“Red Sox looked around Jane at the patient, “Your mind reading coming back?” “With her? Sometimes?” “Huh. You getting anything from anyone else?” “Nope.” Red Sox repositioned his hat. “Well, ah…let me know if you pick up shit from me, k? There are some things that I’d prefer to keep private, feel me?” “Roger that. Although I can’t help it sometimes.” “Which is why I’m going to take up thinking about baseball when you’re around.” “Thank fuck you’re not a Yankees fan.” “Don’t use the Y-word. We’re in mixed company.”
“Qhuinn smiled, baring his fangs. 'Has anyone ever shown you the difference between good touch and bad touch? 'Cause I'd love to demonstrate. We could start right now.”
“You would have made a fine warrior, you know that?" I am one. Death is my enemy." Yeah, it is, isn't it." God, it made such sense that he'd bonded with her. She was a fighter… like him. "Your scalpel's your dagger." Yup.”
“V rolled the Aquafina bottle between his palms. "How long have you wanted to ask me the question? About the gay thing." "For a while." "Afraid of what I'd say?" "Nope, because it doesn't matter to me one way or the other. I'm tight with you whether you like males or females or both." V looked into his best friend's eyes and realized… yeah, Butch wasn't going to judge him. They were cool no matter what. With a curse, V rubbed the center of his chest and blinked. He never cried but he felt as if he could at this moment.”

I hope we hear more from these Characters in the continuation of the series. Thoroughly engrossed in the story from start to finish. This story was exactly what I've been looking for after so many disappointing books. I am not sure if it whet my appetite or made me crave more. I won't have to be patient for long, 7 weeks and Midnight Breed #10 is released! ;)(less)

The main protagonists drew me in from the start. Sterling "Harvard" Chase has always had a place in my heart. He always strove to be the best with an arrogant attitude. I knew beneath the surface we would find a hero with a not good enough complex. From previous installments we knew he was battling bloodlust and on the verge of going rogue. I was surprised to learn that he had battled this, not only for the time we've known him, but since the death of his brother six years prior. Octavia "Tavia" was an unknown name in the midnight breed world. We saw a glimpse of her previously as Chase tried to snipe a politician at a fundraiser. Tavia was a perfect surprise. Her origins were ingenious on Lara Adrian's part. Adrian's series is highly original, but the direction she took with Tavia and her "sisters" was above and beyond. I enjoyed Tavia's attitude as well as her internal dialogue.
Side cast of Characters I removed a star because of the amount of point of view change ups . While I love being inside the minds of past loved characters this took away from the protagonists time to shine. I loved both Chase and Tavia, but we barely spent time with them causing an effect of disconnection between the reader and characters. This is hard for me, the pov is a delicate balance. Whereas we need to feel connected to the protagonists, we also need to connect to the rest of the cast to progress the main storyline premise. Darker After Midnight did not accomplish this, it felt slightly off balance.
A ring of finality
The ending of Darker After Midnight wrapped up a ten book storyline arc. Dragos' reign is decimated. All of the breed have been mated and most have young. This was tied up with a pretty red bow... Lara Adrian has not hinted that this is the final book, so I move forward with hope. I feel we have reached the end of this cast though. I feel she will breathe new life into the series...
A New Beginning? Many threads have been left hanging. Are there more out there like Octavia, her living half-sisters ? Did all the HUNTERS fall when the mass cell phone call activated the ultra-violet collars? How will the BREED fair in the United Nations? What new issues will arise? What of Nathan, Kellen, and lil Maia; the 13&14 year old breed males forming a friendship to become warriors and their tiny seer Breedmate? This has great potential, along with all the new Breed Males born of the Order. Can Tavia have both sexes, or, as her breedmate sisters, is she destined to only have males? I have a feeling at least one of her twins will be female. What of the Ancient's warning and guesses about a second set of immortals fathering the females, while the Breed father the males?
Our new beginning: I believe that we will see a new Order, a stronger Order, Born from the current cast of characters. And this will be our new story...
I am left with a bitter sweet feeling at the end of Darker After Midnight, an emptiness... I guess I will have to take a new journey with another series to fill the void.

Jenna added a very interesting twist to the series, not just in this particular book but hopefully in future books. I hope that we get to see more of her, not just in little bits in another character's story. The story line of the Breed is getting very exciting. Taken by Midnight left me engrossed and wanting for more! We need to hear more about Jenna. I am patiently awaiting Hunter's book :)(less)

A few of the story lines that have been developing over the past few books come to a head in this installment. I also enjoyed Kade/Alexander. For a few books in a row the characters have had no chemistry, instant true love & pretty much followed the exact same plot outline just involving different characters. I really like the base storyline about the Breed. This time around Kade/Alex relationship was built slowly and as the reader you could feel the emotions. I almost gave up on the series after the last book. I was bored by the characters never being developed but enjoyed the underlying story line of the Breed. This book finally combined both character growth & a thrilling story line, something that hasn't been in the series since the 2nd book!(less)
