Other than knowing he was one of our less famous Presidents, I did not know anything about James Garfield until I read 1861 A Civil War Awakening. Garfield was one of many people in that book. This was about 20 years before coming President and I was impressed with Garfield's in 1861 and thought he was a man ahead of time and was interested in learning more about his Presidency.
There was so many interesting parts of this book from how Garfield became President, to the fascinating dillusional person who shot him, the terrible medical care Garfield got, Chester Arthur and Alexander Graham Bell.
This is a fairly short faced paced book that I highly recommend. ...more

One dday by David Nicholls was one of my favorite books and I have been looking forward to new book from the author. I was disappointed with US. I did not connect with the characters.

Since the plot is similiar to the first Penn Cage book, The Quiet Game (justice for racist murders committed in the 1960s) in order to make this book better than The Quiet Game everything is supersized and the book is way too long. Instead of Penn Cage's father being blackmailed, now he is being accused of morder. The bad guys are not just in the the KKK, but a splinter group of more radical racists called the Double Eagles. There is not just one super smart, ruthless, powerful bad guy there are several (Brody Royal, Randall Regan, Frank Knox, Snake Knox and Forrest Knox). It is not just Penn Cage and Caitlin Masters fighting the bad guys, they have teamed up with John Kaiser and Jordan Glass heroes from other Greg Iles novels.
I understand with this type of book not everything is going to be realistic. However, there was so much here that was just absurd. In general, many of the characters in this story are at least in their 70s and they all seem to be way too physical for people of that age. A few specific plot aspects of the story that were really bad included.
1. Sonny Thornfield,a Double Eagle that is at least in his 70s, had a heart attack and then is completely fine the next day.
2. Reporter Henry Sexton is in serious condition after being stabbed and is in the hospital under police surveillance when he is shot by a sniper. Somehow he seems to be in better health after being shot and escapes the hospital the same night.
3. Brody Royal is rich, powerful and smart. When a lot of people are lookng into all the crimes that he is involved in over a 40 year period, I would think he or Randall Regan would have security to prevent Caitlin from just walking into his mentally unstable daughter's house.
I knew this was a trilogy going in, but I expected that this would be distinct book where stories are resolved in each book. For example with Ken Follet's century trilogy each book is primarily about the next generation in a family. This book seems to be divided in multiple parts because the one story became too long. This was a very large book and at the end should have at least resolved the Viola Turner death. ...more

If it was available I would rate this book a 3.5. There are parts of the book that are great and there are other parts that dragged along. The story is about Theo Decker whose mother is killed by a terrorist bomb when he is 13 and they are visiting an art museum. Theo takes an expenesive painting from the museum after the bombing.
There were several great characters in this book including Hobie and Boris. However, I found most of the female characters excluding Xandra to be poorly written. The love of Theo's life is Pipa who was in the museum at the time of the bombing. She never seemed like a real person. Pipa was childlike and bland. The author should have developed that character more. I also thought the Mrs Barber and Kitsy characters were not well explained and inconsistent.
T listen to a lot of audiobooks. I usually only notice the narrator if they are bad. However, David Pittu was at a whole different level reading the Goldfinch. Each character had a distinct consistent voice. Pittu really added to the enjoyment of the book.
**spoiler alert** I enjoyed this trilogy that follows several families around the world from the events leading up to WW1 to present day. Edge of Eter**spoiler alert** I enjoyed this trilogy that follows several families around the world from the events leading up to WW1 to present day. Edge of Eternity began in the early sixties and concludes with Obama winning the presidential election. The main characters in Edge of Eternity are the grandchildren of the main characters of the first book, Fall of Giants. The main characters from the previous two books are minor characters in Edge of Eternity and many of the main characters from Fall of Giants die during Edge of Eternity.
While I am a sucker for these this type ofhistorical fictions book (I plan to read more Edward Rutherfund in the future), it is fun to be snarky about this genre.
It is a small world. The characters from all over the world run into each other and become friends or lovers.
Important but not too important. The characters hold important jobs where they work closely with real famous people. They are always around famous events. However, they themselves are not quite so important to go down in history.
The characters live exciting lives while they are young, but become background props once they become older or when they become married. Even in Edge of Eternity, Dave Williams was a main character but once he married Beep, they were only mentioned when attending special events.
Lastly, the Peshkov's were two very poor Russian brothers. Between the two of them they had seven grandchildren. Volodya's kids were barely discussed. The other five included
-A world famous British pop singer. -A world famous British actress. -A civil rights activists and Congressmen. -A highly regarded Russian journalist who was secretly fighting Communism. -Khrushchev's right hand man who remained an important figure in the Communist Party.
That is quite a high achieving and well rounded family.

I thought it was too much that at the same time that Cecilia finds a letter about how her husband had killed a girl 20 years ago when he was a teenager, the girl's mother (Rachel) finds a video which she thinks implicates Connor, who happens to the gym teacher where she works and where Cecilia's children attend school.
However, the ending where Rachel decides to get revenge on Connor by running him over with her car, but accidently hits the real killer 's daughter was more than I could take.
I really find it hard to believe that a book like this get published let alone become a best seller with a lot of five star reviews....more
