So we have a puppet master, the Duke of Montford. He has "collected" orphan children of kins over the years and then sets them up for advantageous marriages to further his agenda to enlarge the family prestige and coffers. Or something like that. They are basically his wards.
The heroine came to him when she was 8 years old. He arranged her marriage and she is now a widow as we start the novel. And the will her dead hubby leaves behind splits the estate between her and a cousin, Constantine, who will now inherit. He has the estate, she has the money and from this it seems there seems but one solution, they must marry. Seems simple enough, but it isn't.
I really liked that both had a lot of learning to do of each other. She was not very approachable and for me it was a bit hard to like her. Not sure if I ever quite completely warmed up to her. But somehow it all worked for me. The two have a kind of chemistry that cuts through all of her stiffness and it also opens up his hardened heart. It really is the slow getting to know one another what makes this romance.
A great start to a series and I am looking forward to reading the next. I do want to find out more about the Duke of Montford and Lady Arden and their rivalry about setting up these marriages. Its a bit distasteful, but I am intrigued nonetheless....more

This is a difficult review for me to write. The first half is really incredibly emotional. There was no glossing over the aftermath of such a horrible attack. We are shown how her mind compartmentalizes every day life. the bubble gets smaller and smaller. I can relate to just wanting to forget such a traumatic event. Just wanting to wake up the next day and hoping it didn't happen.
Might not be good to read for those that have triggers, but its a very powerful account on what something like this can do to a person. Everyone reacts differently, so this is the interpretation of one.
The other thing well done was in this case the patience of Ryan. He never pushed, he let her go at her own pace. Again, everyone is different and Candace's way is just not being able to go there. Even being touched by strangers is painful.
Ryan really is the standout to me in this novel. He is about the perfect mix of honor, patience, loyalty and alpha.
First half also has a wonderful friendship between Candice, Jase and Mark. I could really feel them and their pain they felt for their friend.
Where things didn't work for me was the second half. I found some of Candice's actions to be a bit too much on the damsel in distress side. So even if one takes out what happened to her, I think just her personality alone is just a tad too damsel and drama lama. And some of the waffling toward the end really got to me. Yet, Ryan never wavered.
I also found the second half to be a lot about nothing. I mean it just meanders on and on with every step she and others take being described in detail. They did this and then they went there and bla bla. Stuff just doesn't move forward much at that point and it gets a bit repetitive.
The very end seemed just a bit of a cop out. I don't know.
All in all its a very well done book with some issues for me I listed. Some tough stuff in there and I really appreciate the note at the end from the author with the info on sexual abuse and help lines. ...more

This started out right with a bang and I just had to keep reading. She wakes up with a hangover in a bathroom in Vegas married to a hot guy and puking. And she can't remember any of it. Can't say this happened to me, but it sounds like a lot of fun, especially if the groom is a famous rock band dude who is might yummy. :)
Reader friends kept yakking about this one again and again, and I finally gave in. I am so glad I did. It was awesome. It has it all, yummy hero, great heroine, just the right amount of angst, sensual sexy times and most important, emotions that feel strong throughout the read.
I love reading about a guy that is not afraid to show his feelings. Its manly. Its delish, its hot.
Have I mentioned the yummy hero? I am looking forward to other books about other members of the band.
I guess I'll have to hunt down when that will be. ...more

I have seen it recommended a while and I liked the premise reading the blurb. One of the few books I bought right from my Kindle after reading the sample and I love that it picks right up where I left off. Seamless. I usually order books from my computer, but I just couldn't wait and had to have it.
This was really good. Beautiful language. There is a lot of dark stuff in here though. I mean the Hero survives Culloden and the author doesn't sugarcoat the aftermath. So if one has certain triggers, maybe read some of the spoiler reviews. Violence is there, some of it towards children and women.
Its gritty and beautiful at the same time. The two souls connected across the continents.
Like the ultimate romance, really. What they have to endure to find each other makes you weep. Yet the hope in both is so strong and the believe never really wavers.
I don't know what else to put in here without spoiling too much. Its the journey that is gripping and full of despair and hope.
Its the kind of saga type historical romance I adore and not many of them are written anymore today.
I already have the 2nd on order. Can't wait to read it. ...more

The author did a great job in building this world. The cover is quite fitting, I found it dreary, dark, gray and depressing. The world that is.
I really felt that and I like when a writer can get me there, to that world I am not familiar with. That is why I read, to be taken away.
The world will stick with me for a while I believe. ...more
