Both of them travel back in time in the last one.
There was a bit more humor and lightheartedness in the previous one, while Elisabeth has many more struggles to get through. Its a bit more gritty, for lack of better word. While I didn't mind the medical learning she does, the constant inner dialogues do get a bit tedious. They go on and on for pages and pages. So there is a lot of "thinking" going on in this one, less doing.
I would have liked to get a little better feeling for the Hero. He has suffered a lot of loss and I would have liked to explore that a little more and just get more of a sense who he is.
But I did enjoy it and in some ways I liked that their stories weren't too similar and that their paths were very different to finding love.
Just was missing the little something to get me up to a 4 star on this one. (less)

I think it fell apart at the end when this very small tiny woman that had no backbone at all in the beginning, suddenly turned into Xena warrior princess without any training swinging a sword. Way to silly.
Lots of promise though as I did like the way the Hero and the other characters were written. But the inconsistencies with the heroine took this down a notch.
All in all pretty average and I was a bit surprised at the high average rating of this book both here and on Amazon. But then tastes vary a lot. What bugs me, might not bug someone else and vice versa. *shrugs. (less)

Master Dan is very yummy. Dominant and vulnerable, guilt about his wife's death gnawing on him. Great fitting pairing with Kari. (less)

----------------------------------- This was really weird. Good things are that cats can be familiars in that world. The world is on another planet and 400 years ago colonists came. So they have first families and grand families or something like that. Its kind of set up like a society in the 1800's. Class system. Just that they use magic. The higher up the more "flair". Now the cats.
They can telepathically communicate with their familiars. And the main cat in this book "thinks" a LOT. And its scarily accurate. Or what I assume as a human being owned by a cat thinks of accurate.
The bad parts for me was the romance. I am not a fan of the fated stuff too much. That is the theme here, heartmates.
But anytime I read the term womanflesh in a romance, I cringe.
I was also totally confused at the beginning. You just kind of drop into the world without any explanations on anything.
And the Hero sometimes reverts to Tarzan speak. Me Tarzan, you Jane, mine. At times its funny. You got the Hero going Me Tarzan you Jane and Zanth the cat going "Me Me Pet NOW". Or some such thing.
So it was interesting as far as world building, but didn't come together for me totally. The romance was seriously lacking though. Not sure if I read more in the series. I had to get this in library mass paperback and it was a bit difficult to read.
I did like the teleporting. Its like, look I am over here, now look I am over there. And yes, Hero teleports onto a horse. Now look, I am on a horse...
Oh that was a good one. Just like the one I read connected to this one "Nearly a Lady".

These 2 are trying to find their way to each other, all the way to the end. Wonderful characters. Emotional and romantic. (less)

I don't think though the emotional trauma was explored enough. It wrapped up a bit fast for me in the end, without the emotional payoff with Jon really opening up to Gabby.
But I still like the author and the way the books read. So I will continue to read them. (less)

I kept thinking it was set in Regency time until a queue, hoops or powder was mentioned. I really didn't get the sense of being in 1760.
Just a bit blah to me, including the love scenes. Just didn't get any emotion out of this one. (less)

Different from many historicals I read. This is set in 1890 in Italy and it incorporates fictional accounts of the early days of horseless carriages. The H/h are really cute together and they are pretty much besotted with each other :). Not being good with explaining things, but I really liked the whats it called, prose? in this one. It just reads so well and smart and witty. I guess its what they call good writing? Not sure what it is, but I really liked it.
To be honest, I don't know if I want to read the other 2 in the series when they are out, because they play out at the same time than this one. Not sure how that can be pulled off without repetition. They are all sharing a castle together after all. I'll have to think about that. (less)

Just what I needed. A rake with a golden heart, besotted with the heroine from the moment he meets her. I totally loved the witty dialogue between the two, and really all the characters. There is a lot of back and forth, like a comedy, but there is still also a lot of heart there.
Very much enjoyed it, made me smile all the way through. :)(less)

Just when you thought she's been through enough, another thing happens. The love between Graeme and Eveline is so believable, authentic for lack of better words. Just oozes off the pages. *sigh
Maya Banks always reminds me a bit of Julie Garwood's historicals. Great heroes and likable sweet strong heroines. (less)
