I haven't read too many books featuring ghosts, but I think this one is my favorite. Lexi's sister is possessed by a ghost hell-bent on revenge, which is definitely interesting but not all that unusual for a ghost story. I like how there's something weird going on, but you're not completely sure what it is until later in the book. It's definitely creepy, so it all comes together for this really interesting atmosphere.
There is a little bit of everything- romance, mystery and friendship are all in there, but it could have had a little more paranormal activity. In all honesty, there's too much going on in this book, so it really felt like Alender couldn't make up her mind about what she wanted to include. There are also some things that aren't resolved in this book that will probably be resolved in one of the other books in the series.
It was definitely predictable, but it seems like there is a lot more to what's going on. I have a feeling there's more to come, and other things will pop up. The characters are also predictable, and what I expected, but it was still fun to see their reactions to what was going on. I did like that it was a normal family going through something paranormal.
It started off slow, but once things got going, it was more enjoyable.
I give it a 3 out of 5. I liked it, and it was a fun yet creepy read.(less)

I was expected a mystery, which you definitely get. But apparently, I need to read the summaries, because I was surprised by the appearance of ghosts. I love that this book is a paranormal mystery.
I was quite surprised to see ghosts, because they don't seem very common in YA paranormal books. Considering this story is dealing with Jack The Ripper, ghosts really aren't that surprising.
I like the idea of a Jack The Ripper murder mystery, and I was surprised by the general spookiness. I loved the facts scattered throughout the novel, and surprisingly, I wasn't irritated by Rory going to boarding school in England. It worked really well, because she clearly wasn't very familiar with a lot of the slang and history over in London, so things were explained to her. And thankfully, it wasn't a massive info dump.
It was very suspenseful, and I couldn't wait to see what happened.
There were a few things I didn't like. The story focused very much on Jack The Ripper, so the characters did seem to have the life or personality I expected. The potential romances didn't seem all that interesting. There are hints that she and Jerome could end up together- if they aren't already- but too much of that relationship happened off-screen, so it's hard to care. And I could see Rory and Stephen as a couple. Either way, I'm sure it'll be resolved at some point in the series.
The ending was a surprise, and I wasn't expecting it. It was a cliffhanger, of course, but it just makes me want to read the next book in the series as fast as I can.
I give it a 4 out of 5 for being a spooky, mysterious Jack The Ripper re-telling.(less)

They're rare, it seems like, so I knew I had to read it. Actually, there is a dash of horror, which seems equally rare in YA.
I liked it, and I loved seeing Anna's story. Okay, so Cas falling in love with Anna was a little unbelievable. It is a paranormal book, though, so I'm willing to overlook that. I do wish Blake had stuck with horror with a touch of paranormal, instead of the paranormal romance it seemed to turn into. Cas as a character didn't work for me, and I can't exactly pinpoint why. It is nice to see a male protagonist for once, but...I just didn't really care about him either way.
But back to Anna. Her story and the curse her mother put on her was interesting. And I liked the creature that killed his dad. Blake did create an interesting world, full of people with different abilities.
I don't think I'm interested in reading the next book. At least not right away. It gets a 3 out of 5. I liked it, but it's not one of my favorites. (less)
