This was one of these books that had more twists than a Venetian Canal. This book was more about how many different twists they could throw in a romantic suspense novel and still make it readable because they were all in there. It starts with a suspicious adoption and a dying wish, and develops into a murder for hire, drug cartel, kidnapping, shoot-em-up mystery with more action than most Van Damme movies. The prroblem is not the action that Ms. Martin packs into the books, Ms Martin clearly knows how to write the action book, its well thought out, planned, synchronized, the plot movements make sense its almost choreographed. The problem I had with this book was the character development, specifically of Dev. He's illustrated as a simple playboy with a darker military past. There's not much more to him. Granted he does change a little and develop over the book, but not enough to substantiate a leading man in a romance novel IMO. He's somewhat flat, for example the entire time between when Lark meets him and she finally sleeps with him after they've gotten her niece, he's only concerned with whats right when it comes to sleeping with her, does he wait until she's no longer a client, is sleeping with a client wrong, his whole concern is, when can I do her.(less)
