I’m going to sort of cadence my thoughts on these books because I pretty much had the same opinion on each one and it seems like I have no time this week. I was 'eh' on Darkfever and Bloodfever but funny thing is, I couldn’t put them down! I devoured all these books in a day each and I started really getting into it by Faefever and found myself staying up all night to read it and Dreamfever.
Mac tells the story of her journey in first person, but it gets carried away a bit on introspect and the series in whole has a major over abundance of world building. I skimmed over a lot of parts. I really wish Moning would of lessened that aspect a bit and delved more into revealing the MC’s true feelings and some of the side characters, I just didn’t feel there was enough character depth to any of them. At the beginning you know Mac’s grief over her sister’s death but that is the extent of her character except for a bit of teenage crushing, which I found rather annoying for a girl her age. Then as the story progresses Mac matures a bit, her grief turns to thoughts of revenge and she is constantly back and forth about everything. Make up your mind woman! Both men, Barrons and V’lane are hot and sexy and each have their own unique appeal but… Barrons is brutal and seems to have no feelings whatsoever and as the series continues you learn very little about him. You finally start getting glimpses of a hidden heart here and there but it's like a grain of sand, very tiny. V’lane on the other hand I felt was decently put together (and you can take that statement a lot of ways, hehe), but you wonder about a hidden agenda with him as well. Which I know is part of the story but I would really enjoy a little tidbit every now and then to see into the character. (But shh...I'm voting for Barron at the end. Sexy, dark, mysterious, oh yes...)
And the romance, heh, drove me crazy. You get a whole bunch of romantic build up, and then you’re left wanting, no end or conclusion. It’s enough to throw your book or ereader across the room. For reals. The end of Faefever and the beginning of Dreamfever have some very intense and disturbing sex scenes, then the scenes transform but it’s still not romantic IMO. And then….we’re back to diddly squat.
And cliffhangers, I have never scene cliffhangers that were more evil then the ones in this series. Bad author, no cookie! And OMG, the one at the end of Dreamfever is The. Abosolute. Worst. Ever! Ahhh! So now I’m going to be stewing until January when Shadowfever is released.
On a good note, despite the lack of character depth I did find myself relating to Mac. My heart sped up with hers; my chest hurt with hers, I got angry, hurt and confused right along with her. Oh and what she says at the begging of Darkfever, about books and reading, yep yep. My thoughts exactly! And BB&B would be an awesome place to work, I would fall in love with it as well.
There is terrific dialogue and the story line is strong, intricate and draws you in but the plot pace is inconsistent, sometimes it moves with a fast, great flow and other times it drags.
The series is very dark and full of mystery & suspense. The action in the first two books, Darkfever and Bloodfever, is somewhat ‘eh’ but it gets better in Faefever and turns fast & intense.
Over all the series is a nice read but I was a bit disappointed with it in the begging. It seems to keep getting better and better though with each book so I am looking forward to the release of Shadowfever on January 18th. ...more
I was enthralled from the first page of The Rest Falls Away and was captivated until the end of As Shadows Fade. I devoured all five Gardella novels with in a week.
The Gardella Vampire Chronicles is a historical paranormal romance with a heroine, Lady Victoria Gardella Grantworth de Lacy, struggling to balance her normal life with her not so normal. I don't want to give any spoilers but she has a lot to deal with throughout the series; along with a few love interests with a bit of a love triangle later on. Gleason takes the classic route with vampires, not adding anything crazy without explaining why. The one thing that is off about the classic vampire myths is nothing permanent and I’ll leave you guessing with that one. The series arc is full and well rounded with romance, mystery, murder and treasure hunting. Each character is endearing and well fleshed out with incredible world building, you can easily picture yourself hunting down the dark alleys with Victoria. The only thing I was disappointed with was the end, and that is because a certain character didn't get their HEA. But who knows, Gleason might write one for that character someday and if she does I will definitely be reading it. The whole series is centered on the same characters so if you don't like trying to remember a million different characters throughout the series you'll like this one. I recommend this to historical romance, paranormal romance and urban fantasy lovers. A must read! ...more

I quickly became engrossed in the story of the DarkRiver leopard pack, and started Slave of Sensation that same evening. Why didn't I pick up this series sooner?!
Lucas Hunter is Changeling and alpha of the DarkRiver leopard pack, and he is on the hunt for a killer before war breaks out between the races. Entering a business partnership with the cold and emotionless Psy, Lucas is hoping to weasel his way in closer to the Council, the leaders of the Psy and would-be rulers of the world, and find out why they are hiding a killer. But Sascha Duncan, his liaison on the project, is not the icy Psy Lucas expected, nor does she carry the metallic stink of the emotionless. Instead, she carries a scent that his animal can't get enough of. Sasha may be a Cardinal Psy, one of the most powerful of her race, but her night sky eyes are the only evidence. Deep down she knows that she is different then her fellow Psy, flawed. So Sasha has become a master at building shields strong enough to keep even the most determined Psy out of her mind, because if anyone were to find out that she wasn't the perfect Psy on the inside, they wouldn't hesitate to take her in for reconditioning - a fate worse then death. But when she meets the Changeling, Lucas, her shields and her deeply hidden emotions quickly begin to crumble. Can Lucas and Sasha fight their growing attraction in order to find the killer before he strikes again?
Nalini Singh masterfully lays the foundation for the Psy-Changeling series in Slave to Sensation. There are three races in this fantastic world. Changeling; human and animal who can shift between the two and cannot survive without emotion or touch. Psy; frigid beings that are strictly logical and who condition out all emotions at a young age, with psychic abilities that are tethered to those of their race through the PsyNet. And human, who are easily overlooked in their ordinariness.
The Psy race is complex and function on a cerebral level, but for those that are supposedly emotionless they are beyond power hungry. At times, the complexity of the PsyNet went above my head but that didn't deter my fascination with the world and story. My favorite are the Changelings, fierce and passionate, they love hard and fight for those they call theirs even harder. If you love shifter romances then Slave to Sensation is a must-read for you! And Lucas, a Changeling, was a wonderful leading man. He is strong, protective, playful, sexy, and once he see's Sasha as his own he fights to show her that there is nothing flawed about her and that she is deserving of the love she has always craved. There is nothing to dislike about his character and everything to love. But his growing relationship with Sasha was nothing short of an uphill battle. There were so many roadblocks in their way my heart was squeezed with doubt at times for their happily-ever-after.
Sasha is confused and understandably terrified at the emotions that Lucas brings out in her. She knows that there can never be a future for them, if she could manage to escape there was still no leaving the PsyNet without her death. And though her logical mind knows this, her body and her newly liberated emotions still crave Lucas. Which causes Sasha to unknowingly pull Lucas into the most erotic of dreams where she gets to play out every fantasy that she is too afraid to realize in her waking moments. These moments were beyond sensual, and though the romance was slow to build it, the chemistry between Lucas and Sasha was undeniable. And though there wasn't a lot of sex either, my smutty romantic heart was still happy. I especially enjoyed the banter between these two! The story moved at a quick pace with suspense and romance making an incredible page-turner. The pack dynamics was intriguing and a number of secondary characters were introduced that I am excited to learn more about.
Bottom line, Slave to Sensation was a wonderfully written story, with captivating characters, and unique world-building that didn't disappoint. I am kicking myself for not starting this series sooner. I can tell this is going to be a back-to-back binge read until I get to the most recently released books. Who needs sleep anyways, that's what coffee is for! lol

The Psy Council are rushing to neutralize the effects of Sascha's defection and secure Silence while also scheming to lessen the Changeling's power.
Faith NightStar is a Psy; cold, emotionless beings logical to the core. Faith isn't just any Psy though, she is a Cardinal F-Psy and in high demand for her foreseeing abilities. But she is also isolated because of those same abilities and on the verge of madness. The dark and bloody visions she has begun to experience are pushing her that much closer to the edge but Faith knows that she has to find the reason behind them before someone else dies. She can't go to her own kind for help though without facing the dangers of rehabilitation, a fate worse then death. So Faith steps into the dark forests of the DarkRiver leopard pack, 'knowing' that she needs them to find the answers she's seeking. What she didn't expect though was her abilities leading her to someone that could either save her or break her completely.
Because the Psy are so emotionless, I've found it's harder for me to warm up to their characters. But Nalini Singh is an expert at character development and Faith NightStar is a prime example of her talents. Faith begins cold but determined, she didn't even realize what was driving her to find the answers she seeked at first, but slowly her layers are peeled away and we see a vulnerability to her that tugs at your heart. Even when Vaughn turns her world upside down and then sideways you can empathize with her confusion and denial...and her attraction.
Changeling Vaughn D'Angelo, is a jaguar and respected Sentinel in the DarkRiver leopard pack. He didn't really stand out to me in the first book so I was surprised that his story was next. Vaughn's animal is closer to the surface then most other Changelings which causes him to be a bit...growly at times. ☺ He has a cat's curiosity about Faith even before he see's her, but once he does that curiosity turns into an obsession that he can't break. Despite the man being less then pleased to be around a cold Psy, his cat hungers for her like no other. He's pushy and dominant, but he also see's Faith's limits and turns into someone that she can lean on and someone who can anchor her to the present when she is in danger of getting lost in the future.
These two fit well. Vaughn has a past that haunts him and Faith has a future that terrifies her. But they must walk a tight line to a happily-ever-after because of Faith's 'conditioning'. And there are many that would kill for control over her abilities. Together, they were sweet and sexy and when they finally got down to business my kindle was smoking.
BUT.....Though I really enjoyed Faith and Vaughn's story, it read too much like the first book in the series for me to be completely enraptured in it. Lucas and Vaughn both had a tragic past while Sasha and Faith are both powerful Cardinal Psy with 'faults' that must escape the council while stopping a killer.
Despite that, Psy-Changeling is the most unique shifter series you will ever read! Full of action, intrigue and passion with superb writing and a story that comes to life on the pages. I can't wait to devour more of this series and find out what the Psy have in story for the Changelings next! ...more
