Gage “Savage” Ringer is returning home after being disqualified from an upcoming fight due to an injury he obtained while training. Disappointed and more then a little bit resentful, he is at the local rec center where many of his friends and fellow fighters train to watch another friend and fighter headline a fight for the night in Japan. A fight he was suppose to be at. There is only one shiny light in Gage's darkness right now and that is Harper Gates. Hopefully he didn't destroy any chance he had with her though when he left for months to train, months that he didn't exchange one word with her...
I have yet to read Ms. Foster's SBC Fighters but I know that she is a big fan of MMA and so am I, so I was excited when I saw first, No Limits (book #1), and then Hard Knocks pop up on NetGalley. From what I could tell while reading Hard Knocks, Ultimate is a loose spin-off from the SBC and also has threads to the Love Undercover series.
The novella introduces a cast of fighters, giving readers little insights into them and their dynamics, and ultimately setting up the Ultimate series. This is balanced out well with the romantic aspects of the story in which we meet Harper and Gage. Their wasn't a lot of back story given for the couple but we know that they have a past relationship that while it may not have had the chance to develop into anything sexual, the potential and the feelings where there. Harper always knew this but it took Gage being away for a few months for it to sink in with him. Now he has one night to convince Harper that his feelings run deep and as a MMA fighter, giving up is not an option. While short, the story is packed with enough sexual tension and searing passion to curl your toes. I really hope that we get to see how their relationship develops further in future novels.
Bottom-line; Hard Knocks was a great introduction to a series that I expect great things from. I am looking forward to Cannon's story in No Limits and the rest of the crazy and kinky fighters we met in Hard Knocks. (less)

Ty Walker was wrongfully imprisoned for five years but now he's out and he's looking for vengeance. Ty expects to get his hands plenty dirty while doing it but what he doesn't expect is to walk out of those prison gates to a leggy and gorgeous brunette. Lexie Berry has been on the wrong side of Lady Luck all her life and having to pick an ex-convict up from prison and take him where he needs to go is just one example in a million of that fact. But when this tall, dark, and oh-so-hot man walks into her life she thinks that just maybe, her luck is finally turning around. Can Lexie convince Ty that taking revenge on those who did him wrong won't make his life better or is dirty cops, low-life criminals, and a past they can't seem to shake Lady Luck's way of telling them that it just wasn't meant to be?
Coming into Lady Luck I really wasn't expecting that much because while I liked the previous books from Kristen Ashley that I read, I wasn't blown away by them like so many promised me. ;-P That being said, Ty...*dreamy sigh*...I totally get it now. Ty Walker is a big, mean, dirty-mouthed poker player/street racer/auto mechanic with a taste for the finer things in life. He married Lexie to cover for an alibi in case anything went wrong with his plans of vengeance or just in case the local police decided to mess with him. He planned to treat her well, pay her for her time, get her away from a rotten criminal in the process, and then move on in a few months. But Lexie turned out to be more then he expected and didn't know he needed. Lexie Berry is one of my favorite heroines to date. She's smart, sexy, independent, a total goof, sweet, and we can't forget stylish! I had no trouble relating to her or her feelings. Ty could be a jerk at times, he had his hangups due to a bad upbringing and past experiences. Lexie had a similar back-story but while Ty was darkness, Lex was all light. But Ty would also do anything in his power to make Lexie happy and once he finally got with the program, lordy, I just melted into a puddle for this man.
Tate and Wood (Sweet Dreams) return for Lady Luck and Nina and Max (The Gamble) play an integral role in the story as well. There was not much about Lady Luck that I didn't love. The story had me alternating between swooning, crying, laughing and some quivering in my girly parts. lol I can't wait to see what comes next in the Colorado Mountain series. Team Walker all the way! But *sniff, Sniff* I did finish Shield of Winter, how could I not? And it was amazing. I love when a book leaves you feeling all happy and content with a smile on your face when you close it. I just started this series so I wasn't aware of all the build up and secrecy surrounding this book and it's H/h. I haven't been reading the blurbs for future books anyways because I like the surprise. I'll come back to write a full review soon but know, this book was phenomenal and my favorite of the series so far. Nalini Singh is a powerhouse in the paranormal romance genre! (less)

In Still Darkness occurs during Night Reigns and Phantom Shadows . If you recall, during those stories you hear talk about Richart d’Alençon's mysterious human girlfriend. In In Still Darkness readers finally get the down-low about her and all of those secretive phone conversations. You don't need to be familiar with the series to read this short story as the author provides background into the Immortal Guardians world, but she doesn't bog the story down for fans of the series by being overly descriptive which I appreciated.
Despite the length, the author packs in plenty of sizzling romance, exciting action and a wonderful HEA into the story. Richart saves Jenna from a pack of vampires, which she doesn't remember, but Richart can't seem to forget Jenna. So he stalks watches over Jenna to be sure that the vampires don't return for her. But soon just watching isn't enough.... Sheldon, Roland, Sarah, Étienne, Lisette and a few other series characters join the story, which I enjoyed. All together, In Still Darkness was a short but satisfying read and I think the author did an exceptional job of giving readers a complete story in such few pages. (less)
