A descendant of the defeated Texan rebels, she's worked on a farm in the hopes of helping her family make ends meet. While things are grueling at best, it's the only life she knows. A life she hopes to make the most of with her beloved, Tanner, standing by her side. Yet all that chances when a First shows up intent on claiming one of the children as his Second.
When Mira is unexpectedly chosen, she's not exactly sure as to what to make of things. Deep inside, she knows she should feel honored by the fact that she's now been given a chance at a better life. Sadly, she's anything but happy. She can't fathom the thought of leaving her family behind, most especially letting Max fend for himself. To her chagrin, she has no say in the matter at hand.
She's now been Absolved, and she must follow through with her new life and the decrees that she's been given. Determined to make the most of the situation, Mira does her best to understand what it means to be a Second. In her mind, she has a chance of making something of herself. There are so many options at her disposal that it's hard to truly make sense of anything.
When secrets about what it means to be a Second come to light, Mira soon realizes that not everything is what it seems. For the sake of keeping the country in one piece many have chosen to continue on in one way or another. Ironically, this means that those chosen don't really have a choice when it comes to keeping their lives in the long run. If she's to succeed at coming out on top, she'll need to play by society's own rules. Unfortunately, doing so comes with a price she's not exactly sure she wants to pay.
The first book in the Live Once series, First, is definitely a story that won't disappoint. A truly original storyline, we're quickly immersed in the life and times of Mira, a girl who just wants to survive and live a good life with her beloved boyfriend-soon-to-be-husband, Tanner. A life, she soon learns, will never be one of her making.
Chanda has done a lovely job in building a world where things are not what they seem. America has changed completely, and it doesn't seem like it's for the better. People now live in farms, trying to overcome the adversities they've been saddled with ever since the Texan rebels tried to put a stop to the Firsts and their convoluted program. In their mind's eyes, they want America to be free, once and for all. I definitely can't wait to see what's in store next for Mira and those she loves. Will the rebels succeed in freeing America, I wonder? Only time will tell.(less)

Harboring a profound hatred for the Acta Sanctorum, he vows to take his revenge on them in every way possible. In his mind, they must pay for taking away the one thing that meant the most to him. Getting close enough to complete that objective, unfortunately, is far from possible.
With no other option but to wait on Lysander’s orders to move against the Acta Sanctorum, Nicholas resolves himself to spending his days training for the moment when he can obliterate the order, once and for all. Preferring to keep to himself, he soon wonders as to whether he’ll be able to exact his plans. He’s a warrior, trained to fight, always at the ready for battle. He’s not satisfied with the fact that he’s to remain on standby when it comes to the order itself.
When he stumbles upon the lovely Kitara Vanders one night, Nicholas soon realizes that she draws him to her in more ways than one. There’s something about her that piques his interest, something he can’t quite put his finger on. When it becomes apparent that she’s been targeted for death, he vows to do everything possible to make sure Kitara comes to no harm. Even if it means that he must act as her knight-in-shining armor in order to ensure that she remains safe from those who seek to exact their retribution upon her.
While Kitara isn’t quite happy that he’s come to her rescue on more than one occasion, she resolves herself to the fact that Nicholas isn’t going to away. He promised her that she’d be there if she ever needs him, a promise he intends to fulfill at every turn. She’s the needed link in his taking down the Acta Sanctorum, and he’ll make sure to tie up all loose ends somehow. Unfortunately, there’s something he didn’t count on – his attraction to the beautiful Kitara.
Another wonderful addition to the Immortalis series, Dark Salvation gives us a glimpse into the world surrounding Nicholas himself. He’s a dark, brooding warrior, mourning for his beloved mate. Katie has injected such feeling into his portion of the story, giving his world a much needed silver lining with the appearance of Kitara Vanders. She tests him in every way, inciting his passion whenever they have a clashing of wills. A bittersweet adventure, this is one of those books you won’t want to put down once you dive into its very pages. I enjoyed this companion novel, and look forward to what’s to come for the series itself.(less)

She has never understood the reason behind her mother's having given her away at such a young age. All she ever wanted was the woman's love, to know that she meant something to her, once and for all. Yet that hope died the moment her mother left her in the hands of cult intent on wreaking havoc on the world itself.
Raised to do the cult's bidding, Samiya has never questioned her destiny. She is evil, after all, a certainty that becomes clear when the Pharoah orders her to partake of a prophecy surrounding Osiris and several of the other gods. While she's not sure as to whether she can truly fulfill the task she's been given, she knows she needs to do everything possible in the hopes of surviving to see another day.
As the minutes go by, and the days begin to blend into one another, Samiya soon realizes that she's neck deep in the heart of a conspiracy she never truly knew existed. Warring factions are determined to get their hands on Osiris' legacy. One side wants it for the greater good, and the other is intent on cloaking the world in eternal darkness. Unsure as to which side she should be on, she does the only thing she can do - survive.
If she's to set all wrongs to right, she'll need to fulfill her destiny. Granted, she's not exactly sure as to what she really needs to do as time goes by. The rules have changed, something she's not quite happy with. Never-the-less, she's intent on doing everything she can to make sure she comes out on top before the darkness tries to claim her, once and for all.
Michael has crafted a tale where it's complex characters and the situations they find themselves leave you wondering as to whether one or all of them will ever achieve their goals. We have the beautiful Samiya, who is eager to please in the hopes of finally achieving the bounty she's been promised. Then there's David who isn't quite sure as to what he's supposed to do. Led by his determination, he stumbles upon a world he doesn't quite understand. Lastly, we have Faris, a loyal companion, touched by the Void, whose only wish is to learn and serve those who've given him a bed to sleep in, and food to fill his belly with. Together, the three embark on separate journeys that will ultimately lead them across each other's path. A journey that may prove to be their undoing in the long run. A truly thought-provoking, it's definitely one you'll want to read, time and again.(less)

To do that, she'll need to delve deeper into the world Darian and the rest of the supernaturals reside. Deep inside, she knows she'll do what's necessary. The question is, can she remain firm in her beliefs, and still come out unscathed?
This was another lovely addition to the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles. Granted, I do need to catch up on book two, but each story can be read as a standalone, while still giving insight to past actions/occurrences that have taken place in previous books. D. N. delivers a story that pulls you in from the very beginning, full of a myriad of characters that leave you wondering as to what will happen next. There were a couple things I never saw coming, but that's the beauty of a well-told tale. It leaves you wanting more by the time you get to the very end.(less)

She's destined to marry someone who can provide her with everything she needs, regardless of her desires. It doesn't matter that her mind and her heart are set on someone she knows she can't have. Her mother has decreed that only a wealthy, respectable man can land her hand in marriage, and the woman refuses to see reason.
Diana knows that following her mother's wishes will provide her with the stability and respect she's come to know ever since she was a child. She's done what her mother has requested, time and again. It's been ingrained from early age that she must please her parents at every turn. Their wishes are her command, and as a well-bred woman, she must do everything they say. Sadly, she cannot the deny the stirrings of own her heart.
When her eye falls upon the gorgeous village blacksmith, Aaron Dawes, Diana soon realizes just how much he's turned her world topsy-turvy. He's been in her thoughts from the moment they've met, and there's nothing she can do to take her mind off of him. It doesn't matter that he's several stations below her. Her heart has decreed that he's the only one that will do for her, and she aims to make that happen. The question is, how can she do just that while maintaining her facade as an upstanding citizen of Spindle Cove?
Tessa's story hooked me in from the very beginning. I absolutely love historicals, and this is one story that does not disappoint! Immersed in the life of the lovely Diana Highwood, we bounce along every page as she sets out to land the man of her dreams. She's a willful and determined young lady who's led by her own heartstrings. It's wonderful to see that she does, indeed, make her dreams come true. I'm definitely catching up on this wonderful series, and can't wait to see what happens next for Spindle Cove and its residents.(less)

Though it can hope to have its world turn out differently.
In Root Canal, we join a tooth whom has lived its entire life surrounded by that darkness. Its life is the same, day in and day out. It shares space with others of its kind, along with a warm pink tongue, and a generous cheek to keep it cozy. In its mind, its living the high life. Yet everything changes when its beloved owner changes things up, and introduces it to a whole new environment.
Acidic drinks, sugary sweets, and salty foods - there's a myriad of items that can take away from a tooth's life. The ensuing cavities are a nightmare, and the pain that follows can be never-ending. A tooth can only hope that the person taking care of it will be more lenient. That he or she will wisen up, and make its life better. Sometimes, for some, unfortunately, that is a possibility that may never happen.
When a trip to the dentist becomes a necessity, a tooth's life takes a drastic turn. It begins to think about the endless possibilities that come from such endeavors. Will the tooth continue to exist? Will it be sent to tooth heaven? Will the pain ever go away? Those questions and more filter through a tooth's mind. Granted, they might be inanimate, but they provide us with a means of enjoying the foods we eat. Sometimes, saving one is the only way to go, even if you have to endure the pain of doing so in the process.
This was such a delightful short story. I enjoyed it immensely. Sharon has done a wonderful job in depicting the life of a tooth as it struggles to survive amidst the 'atrocities' committed against it by its beloved owner. We can feel its angst as it tries to understand why its owner isn't more caring of him and his brothers/sisters, as well as feel its happiness when its life is spared, to some extent.
She's spun a wonderful tale about everyday happenings when it comes to taking care of your teeth and going to the dentist. To see the tooth tell its story in such a warm and insightful way is quite refreshing. It really is. Sharon has a way with words that draws you in from the very beginning. I look forward to more of what she has coming her way in the future.(less)

Stories about her ancestor have intrigued her from an early age. She knows that magic exists. She's had proof of it every day. Though, she's no longer sure as to whether the stories surrounding Umaa are really true.
An unexpected attack soon has her questioning that very fact. Delving into the secrets of her family's past, Lita soon realizes that there is definitely truth in fiction. Umaa really is what her family has said she is. It's a certainty she soon comes face to face with when her grandmother summons her ancestor's spirit from the profound pits of Hell.
Not sure as to what to make of the new knowledge she's been saddled with, Lita does her best to understand the machinations Umaa set forth in the past. She no longer doubts that there is a darker power in existence. Spirits and demons surround her every wake, and she knows that other supernaturals are sure to follow.
Determined to set Umaa's wrongs to right, once and for all, Lita sets off on a journey that is not one of her choosing. If she's to eliminate the threat against her family, she'll need to find the Hellstone. Sadly, it's whereabouts are unknown. Her family's legacy means everything to her, something she intends to preserve by any means necessary. One way or another, she'll do everything possible to thwart the Devil's plans.
A dark and totally twisted tale, Don Franklin draws us into a world where the dark magic, demons, and the secrets of the Underworld collide. He's taken a plethora of myths, and woven them in such a way that they'll have you wondering as to whether there's more truth to them than fable. He's introduced us to a myriad of supernaturals intent on getting their hands on a set of fabled stones said to enrich the holder in different ways. Stones that are capable of destroying the world as Lita knows it if used incorrectly.
I think this is the start of truly unique series. Don has certainly set things up in a way that leaves the reader wanting to know more. I found the lore surrounding Harper Town quite intriguing. So much so, that I can't wait to see what Lita does next as she strives to piece together the broken legacy Umaa has left behind. (less)

For her, this is a normal way of life, and she wouldn't have things any other way. After all, it allows her to bring food to the table in order to provide her family with their every need. In her eyes, she has everything she could ever ask for and more.
When Maria begins experiencing things she never imagined, life starts taking a different turn. She's not quite sure as to what's wrong with her, and she's afraid of confiding in someone for fear of losing her livelihood. She's come too far in order to lose everything now. Yet she can't help but to wonder as to whether her recent ailments are a precursor to the unthinkable. A new child means another mouth to feed, something she can't quite afford right now. On the other hand, her health might be in question.
Determined to make the most of the situation at hand, Maria keeps quiet about the goings-on within her body. In her mind's eye, she hopes that in doing so no one else will take notice of her odd behavior. Unfortunately, that's just wishful thinking. Eyes soon slowly turn her way, and questions arise. Questions, she realizes, she has no proper answer to. Yet when the tables are turned, and someone else's livelihood comes into play, Maria comes to the realization that her life isn't as bad as it seems.
A thought-provoking story, the reader becomes immersed in the lives of several women as they make do with the lots they've been dealt in life. While their ways of life might not be ideal for some, they've learned to coexist in a society that dictates when, where, and how they must live. Full of hope and the need to make the best of their worlds, these women interact with one another each and every day, never once realizing just how different they are from one another. Until the very moment when one of their own changes her very circumstance, only then can they truly see just how different they are.
Mohanalakshmi weaves a tale that pulls at your heartstrings, and makes you think about things you never thought you would. For most of us, we're comfortable with the lives we live. We have everything we could ever ask for and more. Yet there are those of us who are not accorded that privilege. We must continuously to strive in making our worlds a better place in hopes of making ends meet for our loved ones. Sometimes, it's not possible for us to have the home and lives we wish for, thus making do with what we've got. Yet there's always a silver lining behind every dark cloud, a theme Mohanalakshmi injects throughout every page of her story.(less)

Sadly, none of them ever counted on Rainbow's resourcefulness. Neither did they imagine that she'd try to get exactly what she's wanted at a moment's notice.
Evading capture, her mother has done her best to try and destroy the shifters at every turn. Though she's never gotten her wish completely, she's caused enough damage to harm both the coven and the Druids for the rest of eternity. Having learned a little more about who and what she is, Rose has had to come to terms with quite a few things in so little time. While everything she's discovered has been a tad mind-boggling, it has helped her to make sense of what's made her different this entire time.
Derek has forgiven her for the pain and heartache she's inadvertently caused his family. They both know that there's nothing she could have done to prevent the outcome of her mother's follies. While this might have been the case a long time ago, Rose has come to understand that she can now make a difference in everyone's lives. In learning how to control her powers, she's also learned a little more about the darkness that resides within her, a fact that might prove to be her advantage in the long run.
The last book in this intriguing series, Seduced By Power packs a punch that leaves you wanting to read more. In this continuation of the saga, we get to see Rose, Derek, and Blake work together in trying to take Rainbow down. They get stuck in situations that leave you wondering if they'll ever get out in one piece. We get to see the three characters grow in ways we've never imagined.
The very end of the book was heart-breaking, as I never expected Blake's sacrifice to be so poignant. I enjoyed the fact that Kimberly was able to tie in Rent-A-Kid to this series. That was definitely something I never expected. Seeing Sam, Drake, and a few others from the first series make an appearance was bittersweet, most especially since they'd gone through so much already to begin with. I've a feeling there's more to come for Rose and the Rent-A-Kid's themselves, and I can't wait to see what else Kimberly comes up with for this delightful world she's lovingly put together.(less)

She's come to the realization that there are secrets her mother has kept from her and the coven itself. Secrets that might prove to be her undoing. While she's not exactly sure as to why her mother has instigated such duplicity, she and her best friend, Ocean, make it their sole mission to find out everything they can when it comes to Rainbow herself.
Nursing a wounded heart, Rose comes to the realization that she'll now need to leave Derek behind. The thought of losing him has left a gaping hole inside of herself, one she's not sure will mend completely. She knows she's hurt him and his family, but there's nothing she can think of to fix the rift that keeps growing between them.
When help lands at her doorstep in the guise of her mother's lackey, Blake, Rose is weary about allowing him near her. After all, she's had reservations about him before, so what make this time so different? Determined to give him a second chance in proving himself, she allows him the benefit of a doubt. Never once did she imagine that he'd come through for her when she's needed him the most.
To her surprise, love has a way of making things right again. Most especially when Derek comes back asking for forgiveness. Though she knows that things aren't that easy between them, Rose cannot deny what she feels for the beautiful shifter. Her heart aches for him every minute they're apart, and she'll do anything to make things work between them.
As the secrets surrounding Rose's past surface, and Rainbow's sordid plan unravels, Rose comes to understand that she and those she loves are pawns in a game she's no longer sure they'll win. Her mother has made sure to gain the upper hand in everything she does. She's also hell-bent on wreaking havoc on everyone's lives. If she's to succeed, she'll need to beat her mother at her own game. The question is, how far will she go in making sure her mother doesn't hurt anyone else in the process?
Picking up where the first book leaves, Seduced By Pain dives right into the havoc caused by Rose's betrayal in hopes of trying to do the right thing. We're also given a glimpse into the person Blake becomes after having agreed to do Rainbow's bidding. Granted, that little twist in the story was one I never saw coming, but I've got to admit that it gave the character a deeper meaning to its humanity I never thought possible.
In the first book, I honestly didn't like Blake that much, mostly because he was intent on destroying the goodness Rose held inside. In his mind, he meant well, but he was going about things the wrong way. This time around Kimberly used his infatuation with her to the character's advantage. He was able to learn the proper way to love, even if he became a demon in order to see just how much Rose meant to him.
That aspect of the story was certainly endearing. It's wonderful to see that Rose and Derek were finally able to get a little Closure, too, even if their world isn't full of roses. (No pun intended!) I'm definitely looking forward to what the next book in the series has to bring. Will Blake completely redeem himself, I wonder? I guess I'll just have to wait and see.(less)

Granted, she can't quite remember as to how things changed for her so quickly all those years ago. While her life hasn't been easy, she's made do with the up's and down's she's come across since then. She's now a successful public defender for her hometown. One who always gets the job done.
When an unexpected cold case is cracked open, and the enticing Kevin Dancer lands on her doorstep looking for answers, Eden is baffled as to how he thinks she fits in the scheme of things. Her memory of Saint Patrick's is hazy at best despite the fact that everyone he's questioned, thus far, point their fingers in her direction. In her mind, she has no idea as to why people think she knows something she doesn't. In her conscience, however, that's a different story.
Plagued with dreams she can't quite understand, Eden knows there's something she's not seeing. Something happened all those years ago that caused her to forget quite a few things. Remembering it, unfortunately, proves to be difficult. Deep inside, she knows that what's locked inside her head is crucial to the case Kevin is working on. Yet she can't find it within herself to pull the fragments of her past to the surface.
As attempts on her life and those around her are made, Eden soon realizes that someone is out to get her. The person obviously thinks she knows more than she lets on, and does everything possible to try to silence her. She's the case's main witness, even if she doesn't quite know it yet. If she and Kevin are to get to the bottom of things, she'll need to delve into the bowels of her past seventeen years ago. A past Eden soon realizes she wants no part of.
A romantic thriller, Deadly Recall is one of those stories that grabs your attention with every turn of the page. Immersed in an unexpected mystery, the reader finds him/herself smack-dab in the middle of a murder and cover-up conducted seventeen years ago. The secrets surrounding the case are buried in the mind of a woman who's locked away the incident in hopes of retaining her sanity. Sadly, if she's survive what's coming her way, she'll need to unlock what she's hidden so long ago.
The relationship between Kevin and Eden was delightful. I found their banter quite heart-warming, though it is apparent that Eden wants nothing to do with the lovely detective from the get-go. When the heart is wanting, however, it's feelings can never be denied. This is a lesson Eden soon learns when she finds herself succumbing to Kevin's easy-going charm. A wonderful book, Deadly Recall is a fast-paced adventure definitely worth reading.(less)

He's yearned for a better life, one where he has an adequate roof over his head, and food to properly fill his belly. Never a day goes by when he doesn't wish to change his circumstances. He's tired of living in the pits of despair, tired of having nothing to his name. He needs to make something happen, but he's not quite sure as to what he needs to do in order to achieve that very fact.
Daniel spends most of his time lamenting his misfortune. Throughout his wayward existence, he's tried to produce a story that will change life as he knows it. Unfortunately, his writing leaves a lot to be desired. He's tried his best to pour his heart and soul into his words, but nothing he does seems to change things. Never-the-less, he's determined to find the silver lining beneath the cloud that hovers over his head. He knows it's there, but he just needs to look deep enough in order to find it.
His life takes a different turn when the young and lovely Emma makes an appearance. She's beautiful, a little shy, and stirs emotions in him he never thought possible. Deep inside, he knows he shouldn't entertain thoughts about her. She's much younger than he is, after all. Yet he can't help himself. She makes him think about things he knows he shouldn't, and makes him want to change the world she lives in.
The more time they spend together, the more things change for Daniel. With his writing on the back burner, soon all he thinks about is Emma. In his mind, she deserves the best of what the world can offer. She means the world to him, and he'd do anything to show her just how much. Unfortunately, with the way he lives his life, that's nearly impossible. Most especially with the fact that he barely has anything to his name. Never-the-less, he's determined to make the most of what he's got in hopes of achieving a bright and better future.
A thought-provoking book, The Sound of Loneliness is a look into a man's life as he struggles to find meaning within his bleak existence. Everywhere he looks, he finds that nothing changes. Not his life, his family, nor everything he does to try to see the world in a better life. He's lived with the idea that if he's to succeed in life, he must sacrifice the things that mean the most to him. Unfortunately, trying to keep everything balanced within his fragile existence isn't as easy as it looks.
Craig has written a story that captures the reader's attention as we try to understand what makes Daniel Crabtree tick. This story is definitely not for the faint of heart. There are quite a few situations that are described quite graphically throughout the book. Situations that might leave a person astounded by what the character encounters in his every day life. Despite that, though, the book is definitely an intriguing read. (less)

At time...moreJan Rose is not your everyday sixteen-year-old teenager. She's a genius through and through, something not even her mother truly acknowledges. At times, she'd rather be just an ordinary teenager, though she can't deny that she loves the fact that she can do just about anything she puts her mind to. She's awesome at Photoshop. She can crack a computer in two seconds flat, and she's good at reinventing herself. So much so, that she has own personal computer army at her disposal.
Her mother owns and operates Assured Destruction, a software/computer shredding/resetting business out of their home. If there's something no one needs to know, they come to their shop to get their data wiped or completely destroyed. For Jan, the business has worked to her advantage. She's kept a little something, here and there, from the people who have come to get rid of data/hardware they no longer need. It's how she came to create her beloved network called Shadownet.
For Jan, her network is her life. It allows her to be whomever she wants, and make use of the Internet's anonymity. Granted, her personas were built around actual people, but they allow her to live a precarious life without having someone else look down her back at every turn. When her livelihood and several of the real life persons whose personas she's undertaken are threatened, she soon realizes something is definitely amiss.
She's not exactly sure as to who could want to cause her harm, much less wreak havoc on the lives of those she's pretended to be. This entire time she thought she was careful. That no one else knew of the unique world she's created for herself. Sadly, she wasn't as careful as she thought she was. Determined to find out who's behind the recent attacks, Jan sets out to build a trap in hopes of bringing the culprit to justice, once and for all. Unfortunately, she'll need to stay alive long enough to make that happen.
This was a delightful start to a very promising series. An original tale, the reader finds him/herself immersed in the life and times of Jan Rose, a teenage hacker immersed in a world of her own. She's lived a quiet life, though her online profile is anything but. With a slew of personalities at her fingertips, she's built a lucrative network that can crack just about anything. Michael has built a world full of characters that anyone can relate to. A world where nothing is as safe as it appears to be. I'm looking forward to what comes next in this series.(less)
