Honestly I don’t know what to make of this book, the first time I saw this book I was so eager to read it, and when I read it I felt like ‘meh~’. Then the more I read the book the more I regret the choice. I don’t know, maybe this is more because I’m too lazy to grasp the book or the writing just suck so bad. I mean, compared to Victor Cha’s The Impossible State this book sucks so bad. I just couldn’t keep my focus for more than 20 minutes with this book, it felt so hard to digest.
Nevertheless, it was not a lost cause, there were parts of the book that I felt grateful for reading this whole book. The writer had interviewed many North Korean defectors (even the infamous Hwang Jang-yop), so it’s nice to know stories from other defectors that were not published. In relation to that, I hate the writer for always pointing the fact that almost all North Korean defectors used a gold watch. At first it felt like a nice observation, but the more he does that, the annoying he gets, and it made him look so shallow for (sort of) making fun the North Koreans for their fondness of gold.
All in all, I would not openly recommend this book to anybody, because it’s just boring for me. He was too analytical for my taste. I would recommend Victor Cha’s The Impossible State than this book, but that’s just me.(less)

Can I really write a review of a book that I technically never finished? I shouldn't, right? But I need to have some closure before I can move on to another book, so I won't be reviewing this book, so much as I am going to share what I feel when I read this book.
I decided to stop reading this book on page 167. I know, I know, I was so close to actually finishing the book. But a thought hit me, should I really just finish reading the book just for the heck of it? When I actually am so not interested anymore? I decided that there was no use of me for finishing a book if all those words was just going to be a pile of rubbish in my head.
Don't get me wrong. This was not a bad book. It was actually a quite nice read, but I just don't think this book was for me. First of all, I have never read nor have I ever like a self help book (except for Chicken Soup for the Animal's Soul, oh my guilty pleasure). Second of all, I will never be caught alive reading a book about health or anything like that. I knew it from the very beginning that this was not my book and I would never will finish this book, but I want to have faith in myself so I gave it a shot. Too bad, I was, once again, right. This book was not for me and I could never bring myself to finish it or to like it. But, I will never discourage anyone who wants to pick this book and read it. I really wont.(less)

A two star does not mean this was not a good book. It's a good book actually but for me personally it was just OK. I'm a big fan of history and memoirs, so I was happy when I found this book while I was in Singapore. I went as far as using all that is left of my SGD to purchase this book only to read it a year later (because I was caught on other books, bad habit, I know).
So anyway, the book is great. But I just can't seem to enjoy the way the story flows (might be the translation? I'm not sure)(less)

When I first read the book, I thought I was going to hate it. I mean with 7 main characters and too much quests to finish in just one book and whatnot. But oh no! I'm loving it! True, I still find it confusing at times with all the characters, and sometimes I confuse myself between Piper and Hazel (for me, the development of those two were not that great so sometimes they just sort of blend as one and I have to dig from two previous books to know which is which, though obviously they are both very different, one being Aphrodite's daughter and the other is Pluto/Hades' daughter).
All in all, I can't freaking wait for The House of Hades which will come out at Fall 2013, which is ONE FREAKING YEAR FROM NOW!!! (less)

So I'm not going to say it's a bad book or a boring one, it's somewhat terrific, but I just find it bias. I mean, I can't help but think that the only reason this book made it big is because she's an Iranian national, she's not happy living in Iran, she's a rebel against what happened in Iran and now she made a graphic novel about it, one that is somehow is so huge in the western world. It's not like she had it bad living in Iran, not like other women living in another fucked up place living a fucked up life and wrote a book about it. I get her sorrow, passion and whatnot, but I just wouldn't recommend this book and I don't think I quite enjoy the book. But, hey, to each their own.(less)

One thing I don't like it is the fact the too many love stories going on. I don't think that's necessary but then again, I can't wait for the next book.(less)
