I love the heroine's vulnerability and her originality as a character. I ADORED the contrast between the hero and heroine. I know this is a cheesy line from Jerry McGuire, but he really completed her, and vice versa. The really great thing about Laura Kinsale books is that they're so rich that when you read it a second, third, fourth time, you are still discovering something new. A+++++...more

I love that Anneke pushes the M/s and TPE envelope, and yet--through the talent of her writing--never leaves any question that the h/h are deeply in love with each other.
If you are into hard BDSM, deep power exchange, and/or the master/slave dynamic, you absolutely must read this book....more

It took a genre I don't generally like--non-consensual BDSM-- and made me like it. It also made some of the things that used to turn me off, like hard pain and watersports, seem hot. I think it's because she gives some hints at the psychology behind it.
I can't say this book is realistic, and it is most CERTAINLY not for the easily offended or faint of heart BDSM-wise, but I will say that this author has some skill to take topics and genres that are a hard sell and make them palatable to a reader like me. She also managed to turn a guy who is a real psycho villain in the beginning into a sympathetic character by the end. I always admire authors who take that chance--who present us with a hero who is not perfect and perhaps even seriously flawed, and shows us an arc to redemption, or at least steps in that direction. Very interesting and brave writing. if you can read with an open mind and you can handle hardcore BDSM, give this one a try....more
this little gem masquerades as a "how to" book, and it does contain much useful information about Domestic Discipline. But do not be fooled. This bookthis little gem masquerades as a "how to" book, and it does contain much useful information about Domestic Discipline. But do not be fooled. This book is also written to turn on and titillate. I've got to say it titillated me to pieces. The author pushed all my buttons as a long-time adherent of the DD lifestyle, and the intellectual, almost professorial way the information is presented makes it that much more fap-worthy. :-)
If you are into DD, especially the psychological joys behind the physical actions, YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK. You will enjoy it! It is both informative and fun!...more

HOWEVER, as someone who enjoys the lifestyle as a profound submissive, this book pushed a lot of buttons for me. I get tired of the strong, self-aware submissive. I actually liked that this girl was pretty messed up and that she really needed the dominance of this man to get herself straightened out.
I also loved the way the dominant explained why he did what he did as he went along. It was spot on for me and it got me hot. I loved that he did not cater to her pleasure in every single situation, something that happens far too often in romantic BDSM, in my opinion.
This book is not perfect, but if you can stomach the editing, it's worth a read. Despite all it's many flaws it has a spot on my (very small and exclusive) keeper shelf. ...more

I originally gave it a lower rating, but with age I have come to appreciate a bit more about this book.
First of all, it's an erotica book unto itself. The language is oddball, the world is complete fantasy, and it's grossly politically incorrect by today's standards. I think if this was published today she would have had to make all the "princes" and "princesses" at least 18 years of age, etc, etc.
With that said, this book did it for me. What that means is, I masturbated my pants off. I masturbated to this book probably more frequently than I have for any other book. Maybe that's TMI...if so I'm sorry. But we all know we read these books to get hot so I doubt anyone is scandalized. But LITERALLY it was a stroke fest, and weirdly when I first read this twenty years ago, it was the same way.
But back then I didn't appreciate this for what it was...a very authentic exploration of the complexities and pleasures of power exchange. The whole world in this book is sex, and Roquelaure/Rice plays very deftly with shifting power and the very essence of submission. As a submissive person myself I was fascinated by the parts about letting go, about yielding and allowing yourself to be broken. I loved how the slaves were not mindless vessels but all had their own inner power or that thing that set them apart. Princess Lynette, Prince Alexi, Prince Tristan, even Beauty. The dominant characters were also shown with foibles, which made them more interesting than perfect, rigid masters.
I loved the hopelessness and dread of it all, and the constant, constant, CONSTANT paddling, fucking (and anal raping, once you get to Alexi's part of the book.) Did I mention the CONSTANT PADDLING? But what can I say, it all gets me hot.
I wouldn't read this book with some great hopes for a storyline or message (hence the four stars rather than five), but if you just want to visit a mystical, lyrical, paddle-filled world where you will read the word "buttocks" continuously and probably masturbate furiously, then this is your book. I think I'm going to have to suck up the price and buy ecopies of book 2 and 3 also. My paper books disintegrated many years ago......more

I was not at all sure this was going to be a good book, but I was SO WRONG! This is an excellent book. The writing is fabulous, the characters were likeable and vivid, the plotting was well done, and the list was a great device to keep me reading until the very end. I was rooting for Callie and Gabriel from the first chapter and their love story didn't disappoint me. The plot to romance ratio was perfect. I highly recommend this book. I am definitely going to track down some more Sarah Maclean stuff......more
