I have to be honest when saying that legal thrillers really aren't a genre I generally want to get my hands on. I started this book expecting it to be so so. I tell you though, I should stop judging a book before I read it! This book was really good. Page after page it surprised me with action around every turn. Just when you think things are calming down in the storyline, Will gets into an even bigger predicament.
One thing that seems to be in most legal thrillers that I am not to big on, is the legal jabber. It's easy for me to zone out when they start talking about mergers, etc. The good thing about this book though is that although it did have a little bit of that, it also wasn't "drenched" in it. It felt more like a thriller with a legal background.
In reading previous reviews of this book I found out there was a twist at the end. I was disappointed that fact was even mentioned (and look, here I am mentioning it) because once I knew there was going to be a twist, it was easy for me to figure out what the twist was. It was still interesting but would have been better if I wasn't looking for the twist.
Overall this book is really great. I am surprised it's Hirsch's first one. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of legal thrillers. You won't be disappointed! For those who aren't fans of this genre I suggest it anyway. Even if you aren't into this sort of thing you will appreciate the good writing and the interesting storyline. ...more
Ok. So I usually do not start writing any review until the book is finished but with this book I had to pause my reading and just vent out my opinionsOk. So I usually do not start writing any review until the book is finished but with this book I had to pause my reading and just vent out my opinions. What is going on here!?!? These House of Night books have gone totally downhill- and fast. Why has Zoey become like this? Or has she been this way the whole time and I never noticed? First of all, I used to think it was kind of cool that these books were set in a time frame where events happened just days from each other. Now I think that fact has damaged some of the characters. For example, it's been like what- 3 months or so? In that time Zoey has had not 1, not 2, but 5 guys she's been interested in! At first I could understand because she had been with Heath for so long and nobody else and then her whole life turned upside down when she became a vampire. She went to a whole new school with new friends and boys. I could see how it would be easy to get a new guy to match all the other changes happening. But after awhile all these guys she can't decide between start to make her look weak and indecisive. It makes her look like she can't function unless there is some guy by her side. Why has she been chosen by Nyx again? I am really starting to forget. Next off, I don't like what the authors do to characters that don't fit in the story anymore. Like how Eric is such an ass now when there wasn't even indication of that before. Or (without giving away the name) a character dies in Awakened and you can tell it's just because this character wasn't contributing enough to the story anymore. The authors make the characters randomly unlikeable or dead. How fantastic. Thirdly, I hate how fast Zoey is able to move on. A great guy who you supposedly loved just freaking died and days later you're able to go have sex? I mean talk about getting over such a horrible tragedy so quickly. Lastly for now (until I finish the book) is how can Zoey just sit on this island with Neferet and Kalona out there? She has agreed to take on this path of fighting them and she just sits on her fantasy land doing it with Stark. In a way it makes Neferet and Kalona seem like not such a threat. If you have time to sit around and sex it up, the danger must not be that serious. How can she feel justified in staying there when the whole world is at risk? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
I wrote a review yesterday about how I was feeling about the first half of the book. Well I still feel that way, but the second half of the book is turning out 10 times better than the first half. The 2nd half feels more how the series was when it first started which I like. I only have 3 chapters left so I will give my final opinion after I finish. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ I am very pleased to say I like how the book left off. It left me with hope for the future books. I am looking forward to how these new things that happened are going to turn out. I feel we're finally heading into a new development of the series after being stuck in the same situations for so long. ...more

The first 130 pages was for some reason hard for me to get through. After that, the book took a complete turn... for the best! I can't say enough about it. After you get past the scenery and setting build up there is so much adventure and surprises to make it well worth the read. Han and Raisa are characters you really want to follow. They each have their own struggle and conflicts to where you want to keep reading and not put the book down. I have already suggested this book to many people. To those who are considering reading this, when you first start the book, don't give up! It will be well worth it in the end. ...more
