What can I say about Darkness? This book was just everything I was hoping for and more. I didn't think I could fall any more in love with this series but I was wrong. My love grew tenfold with this book. Cho continues to amaze and dazzle with his spellbinding storytelling. I am seriously in awe of the world this author has created. So much happens in this book and I was sucked in right from page 1. When Florence learns of a terrible prophecy, she will risk everything to undercover the truth. Venturing in to the Darkness, Florry and friends encounter terrifying monsters and more, dodging death at every turn. Like the first two books, the story is told in 1st person from Florence's POV. However we do get chapters here and there that focus on other characters. I really liked this as it helped to move the plot along and gave more insight in to what was happening in the background. As always I loved Florry. She is a brilliant character, so strong and determined. Now that Niemela is her home, she does whatever she can to save it from the Darkness. She is truly a character to admire.
I just seriously adored this book. The story-line is fantastic; full of mystery, heart-stopping action, and a sweet romance. I love the direction the author has taken with mer. It's such a unique take. I really hope I won't have to wait another 2 years for the 4th book because I NEED it!! I know there is so much more still to happen and I cannot wait to find out what will come next. I really cannot recommend this series enough. Without a doubt one of my all time favourites.

This was a really fun and extremely quick read. I loved it. The banter between Emma and Jason was incredible and there were many laugh out loud moments. As per previous birthdays, Jason takes Emma on an adventure that she'll never forget. He brings her in to a world that she never knew existed. I loved all the different creatures that were featured. I was really curious about Jason too. I'm pretty sure I know what his deal is but I'm looking forward to finding out more in the next book. From the very first page I couldn't get enough. It was very well written and captures the readers imagination. But the reasons I reduced a star were 1) I felt like it was waaay to short. It was only 100 pages. I would have loved for this to be a full length book. Because of the length I felt that things happened a bit too quickly. Which leads me to reason 2) When Emma is first introduced to all these creatures. I think she handled everything way too well. She never really questioned anything. She just took it all in her stride. I would have liked a bit more of a reaction out of her. Overall this was a quick, fun and exciting read that I would highly recommend....more

Cho is one of the best descriptive writers I have ever encountered. They way he describes Niemela and the creatures down there is phenomenal. You can see every colour, feel every texture, you just feel like you are really down there with Florence and all the mer people. They world is so layered, between the vibrance and colourfulness of the kingdom to the eeriness and mystery of the darkness. If you don't like too much description in your books then maybe this one isn't for you but I still HIGHLY encourage you to give it a try. It's just so amazing. Florence I really like. She isn't the usual clingy and needy character. She has grown so much in the two books. In Luminaire she decides to enter the Life Path tournament so as to finally feel like she belongs somewhere. She wants to show the mer people that is not some weak little human. She is such a strong character with a warm and caring heart. Rolan I love. Even though he becomes very closed off and pulls away from Florence I still loved him and so wanted him and Florence to finally become an official couple. The few rare glimpses we see of the other side of Rolan are so sweet and I could tell that he really does care deeply about Florence. They are just so cute together. Yolee I also love. She is so cute! I just want to squeeze her! She is so loyal and supportive of Florence. She has stood by her side the whole time even when everyone else has shunned her. I just want to be her friend.
The darker side of Niemela is seen more in this installment and more and more questions are raised as to what is happening. The tournament is full of danger and and brutal tests of both body and mind. It was very reminiscent of the tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire although this one felt much darker and more dangerous. We learn a lot more about Niemela society and I was fascinated by the different Life Paths and we got to learn more about the history and customs of the mer people.
I could go on and on about how much I love this series but I won't so I'll just leave you with this: READ THIS NOW!!! You won't be disappointed!

This is only the second mermaid novel I have read but I have to say it is by far the best! Before starting this book I was in a bit of a reading sl5/5
This is only the second mermaid novel I have read but I have to say it is by far the best! Before starting this book I was in a bit of a reading slump but it managed to pull me out of it. It had me hooked, line and sinker (pun intended). Cho has created a mesmerizing and enchanting world beneath the sea. This was one of the things I loved about this book; how it was actually set in the mermaids world and not ours. The beautifully vivid descriptions of this world will make you think you are actually there. You will be entranced by the lush and vibrant colours of this underwater kingdom, everything described down to the last detail. You could practically taste the kelp. You know that the author has done a lot of research. The characters are the second reason I loved this book. Florence I really liked. I felt I could relate to her and how she goes by just observing life, never engaging in it. She experiences real character growth throughout the book and we get to see her finally come out of her shell a little. The mer folk I really enjoyed. Princess Yolee was a little cutie, I wanted to squeeze her. She is so fun and loving, she became a true friend to Florence. Prince Kiren I was always a bit wary of, even if he was a bit of a charmer. Prince Rolan we don't really get to know until about half way through the book. He is very distant and almost cold to begin with but then we see that there is more to his hard exterior. In the end I found myself rooting for him ( why is it I always seem to go for the brooding types?). The story-line was well thought out. It was very interesting and kept you engaged in the book. It was never boring. The ending left me dying to know what happens next.
Overall this is a must read for any mermaid lovers out there. A spellbinding read that will leave you gasping for air and make you wish that this world actually existed and that you could be a part of it.
Side-note: I had the song Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid playing in my head the whole time while reading. Even though the lyrics should be the other way around. Now it's gonna be stuck in my head for days :P I love this song though so I'm not complaining :)

I was a bit two minds about this book while I was reading it. On the one hand I thought it was a very unique and interesting story and I loved the fact that it was told from a male POV. On the other hand I didn't really like some of the characters and I thought some of the decisions they made were a bit, for lack of a better word, stupid.
Lets start with what I liked. I loved the fact that it was about killer mermaids. This is the first mermaid book I have read and so the fact that the mermaids weren't all nice and wonderful was a pleasant surprise. I loved that the book was told from Calder's POV. It's not often that you come across a book told from the "bad guys" perspective (to me anyway). I liked Calder. Even though he has killed people, he doesn't want to. He tries to change the way he lives but he can't escape the clutches of his evil sisters. They love the thrill of a kill and won't let him forget what they must do. You see a lot of character growth with Calder throughout the novel and so I was able to feel for him. Lily on the other hand I didn't really connect with. I thought she fell for Calder way too quickly and was way too forgiving when she found out what Calder was and why he became so interested in her. I did like how quirky and eccentric she was though.
The story-line was filled with many twists and turns so your were kept in suspense about what was going to happen next. When you thought you knew what way the story was going, you were taken in a different direction. Although I didn't really much care for the love story, overall I really liked the book. I will more than likely read the second one. I look forward to reading more mermaid books :)
