Probably because after Twilight I went on a vampire book readingIn general, I've been staying away from starting to read new vampire books recently. Probably because after Twilight I went on a vampire book reading rampage, and got a little vampired-out. About a year ago I discovered the lovely world of faery books, which led me to read Julie Kagawa's Iron Fey series. That series soon became one of my favorites (and I also have a mega-crush on Ash!) So when I saw Julie Kagawa was writing a vampire book, I figured I would give it a try.
And I'm SO GLAD I DID! The Immortal Rules is a totally fresh take on vampires, and I absolutely loved it. The book takes place in the future where vampires have taken over, so it's more like a dystopian vampire story. The main character Allison starts off human, living in the Fringe, which is an area outside of a vampire city. The reader gets to see a decent amount of her life as a human, and what she has to do to survive as an unregistered human. She hates vampires, but when she's almost killed by rabids (vampire-zombies), a vampire comes to help her and gives her a choice: die or turn into a vampire.
She chooses to turn into a vampire, and from there the whole story really took off. She learns about how vampires live from the vampire who turned her (Thus the name The Immortal Rules … ), but then after some trouble strikes, she's forced to go out on her own. She soon discovers a group of humans on a quest to find the only human-run city still out there, called Eden, and joins in with their group. They don't know she's a vampire though, so she has to pretend she's a human. And of course Julie Kagawa always has a great romance in her books, so a romance developed between Allison and one of the humans. I loved them together; their relationship progressed nicely and was well-done.
This book had a great pace -- not too fast and not too slow. I always wanted to know what happened next, but the story never felt rushed, which was good. I love the vampire mythology that Julie Kagawa created; it was very original and with so many vampire books out there, it was nice to read something different. I also loved seeing Allison's character development from a human to accepting her life as a vampire. I definitely look forward to reading the rest of this series! ...more

NotI loved the Evernight series by Claudia Gray, so when I saw that Balthazar, a companion novel to the series, was coming out, I was super excited! Not only because I wanted more of the awesome world of vampires and wraiths that Claudia Gray created, but because Balthazar was one of my favorite characters in the Evernight series! It was clear in Evernight that Bianca and Lucas were meant to be together, but that didn't stop me from feeling bad for Balthazar and wanting him to have an awesome love story of his own. And in Balthazar, that's exactly what he gets!
The Evernight series was told first person from Bianca's point of view, and Balthazar is different in that it is told third person alternating from Bathazar and Skye's point of views. I loved this because I felt like as a reader I was able to understand their relationship more fully. I also enjoyed Skye's character, and am glad I "got to know her" in this book! She's spunky, smart, and relatable. She's an average teen thrown into a crazy situation, and I like how despite how she's in the midst of a vampire crisis, she's still relatable on a teenage level.
Now, moving onto Balthazar! W-o-w! I love him even MORE after reading this book! I don't want to spoil anything for those of you who are going to read the book, but we learn so much about Balthazar's history, delving deeper into his life before becoming a vampire and the years between his becoming a vampire and going to Evernight. I also loved reading his present day sections, where the reader gets to see him fall for Skye!
For those of you who are also huge Evernight fans, there are cameos in Balthazar from Bianca, Lucas, and Clementine. But you should also know that Balthazar is different from Evernight, since it takes place in a normal public high school. I loved it just as much as all the other books in this awesome series, and am hoping that Claudia Gray continues to write books about the characters from the incredible world she created. ...more

I absolutelyDARK SEEKER by Taryn Browning is a fun, fast-paced read with a whole new breed of vampires and one of the hottest guys to hit YA fiction.
I absolutely love the world Taryn Browning created. Seekers hunt vampires, but this isn't the sort of mythology you're used to. Browning added a whole new spin onto it, but I don't want to give anything away. Let's just say that her new breed of vampires will take the species to a new level. I also loved the way she incorporated Native American lore into the story, by relating it to the Seekers.
Speaking of our Seeker, the protagonist Janie is a great character who will be a fabulous role-model for teenagers. She's strong, spunky, and isn't afraid to say what's on her mind. She's also a great vampire hunter. Taryn Browning excels at writing fight scenes, and when Janie is battling vampires you'll feel like you're right there beside her, rooting her on to win. Janie doesn't do everything alone though -- her mom Isabelle and her mom's boyfriend Abram serve as excellent mentors throughout the book.
I saved the best for last …. KAI! I loved Kai. He is … well, I'm not going to give away what he is, because that would spoil the story for you, but he is HOT! However, it's not only his looks that make him appealing, but his personality as well. He and Janie have some fabulous witty banter, but you'll also get to see a deeper side of him when Taryn gives you a few glimpses of what's going on from his point of view. His love story with Janie is sweet, and will also leave you wanting more.
DARK SEEKER was a fantastic debut novel, and one that I highly recommend. I can't wait to read the rest of the SEEKER series to see what Browning has in store for us! ...more
