There are six humans with superpowers who keep the people safe from ghosts and maintain the barriers between worlds. They have been told a seventh is coming who will aid them in this battle. Percy Parker arrives at the school of Athens to continue her education. She is an albino with a great gift for languages. She feels a great attraction towards Professor Alexi Rychman who also feels the connection between them. But is she the seventh they have been waiting for or is it all a trick?
I really tried to get into this book but the language really held it back. By the end of the book I was just skimming. The characters annoyed me and the drawn out plot failed to engage. I wouldn't bother with the next book in the series.(less)

For ten days she has been kept in the dark along with six other women by a man who only brings them out to drink their blood. But Valerie isn't going to wait to be rescued. She is determined to do it herself.
You don't need to read the other books in the series. Each is a one off romance that has other characters in it that aren't necessary to the plot. Lynsay Sands writes a pretty light read without a lot of angst. (less)

Lady Viola Thornhill insists the estate is hers and refuses to leave. With both living under the roof, sparks fly. But both parties are determined to fight the attraction less they reveal the secrets each carries.
This was a big yawn for me and not as good as some of the other works. Disappointed.(less)

This tells the story of Wen whose husband Kejun, an army doctor is killed in Tibet. Wen doesn't believe he is really dead so she joins the army and travels to Tibet to find out the truth. She rescues Zhuoma, who is also searching for someone and they find themselves living with nomads experiencing a very different way of life.
I have to say this isn't the best written novel I have ever read, the story however makes up for this lack. The mystery of what happened to Kejun keeps you going to the end. It is quite a quick read but very compelling. It inspires me to find out more, and that is all you can really ask for in a book isn't it?(less)

Suddenly it is possible to get the laws overturned and this time the wolves will be hunted by helicopters and men with machine guns. Sam, Grace and Cole need to find a solution to the problem and they are quickly running out of time.
I didn't enjoy this book as much as i did the first book in the series. But then again I have since read Scorpio Races and The Raven boys, going back to one of her earlier novels doesn't compare. I think Stiefvater is a very talented author and it shows how much she has grown going from a good author to a great one.(less)

Aden is possessed by three other souls that reside inside of him. He is in love with a vampire who until recently viewed humans as only a food source. One of his souls is a seer and can see the future and it is not good for Aden. In a short amount of time he is going to die. And there is the fact that his closest friends are under a death curse. Life for Aden is never boring.
I have to say the beginning and ending of this book are pretty bad and in need of a rewrite. It is an average read that neither excites or makes you want to recommend this book to anyone. But as a popcorn read it isn't bad. (less)

Animal P...moreAnimal People is the sequel to The Children by Charlotte Wood though it is not necessary to read the first book in order to enjoy the second. Animal People is about a day in the life of Stephen or rather the day from hell. Stephen has a dead end job at a kiosk at the zoo, his house is dirty and mismatched and he obviously feels that his girlfriend is too good for him so he decides to break up with her. Stephen has disengaged himself from both society and life, he people watches without the understanding of what makes them tick. He is quite judgemental in his people watching not understanding that what he doesn't like in others is a reflection of a trait he doesn't like in himself. He is incapable of action, is socially inept and he doesn't understand people who have empathy with animals, he is not an animal person. For all that Stephen isn't a bad person, he just needs to gain a little empathy and to stop hating himself.
This was an excellent read, the story flows and is easy to read. It makes you question things about yourself, others and how we treat animals. I think Charlotte Wood is a very talented author and I hope to read more of her books. Four and a half stars.(less)

Ward's series is growing in scope and vision and truly has become an enjoyable read. The book opens with the words "The king must die." and the ramifications of this travel throughout the entire novel. It is a must read novel in the series that I maintain should be read in order.
I really feel sorry for the Black Dagger Brotherhood, they just receive blow after blow and keep going. If characters could revolt against their author, I'm sure these guys would be.(less)
I have to say I was very disappointed in The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. First off let me say that the writing is beautiful. Images and descriptions are above par, however the characters felt very two dimensional to me. I never really understood any of them or their motivations and I thought the dialogue was also in this vein.
A woman in 1964 goes into labor and has twins, one, a boy is perfectly normal while the other, a girl has Down Syndrome. The father is a doctor and hands the girl to his nurse and tells her to drop her off at an institution. He tells the mother that the baby girl died. The nurse is unable to leave the girl, moves and decides to raise her alone. I found the story a little too contrived and without great characters there wasn't anywhere it could really go. Like I said, disappointing.

It all starts with the cows, they have been infected with a virus that makes them sex driven, rage fuelled killers. Then it spreads to other animals. Every rat, fluffy bunny and cute kitten are now on a mission to kill all humans. Set in Scotland, the main characters are an abattoir worker, a sixteen year old forced vegan and a journalist who is forever in the shade of her father.(less)

Nicolai agrees to help her in exchange for Isabella marrying him. Isabella agrees to do anything to help her brother but quickly finds out that the rumours about Nicolai are based in fact. Nicolai knows there is danger in loving anyone and tries to send Isabella away but he is unable to let her go. Somehow Isabella must break the curse that is not only ruining Nicolai's life but the entire valleys.
It is very gothic and melodramatic. It does try the patience a lot and found myself mentally screaming "Make up your bloody mind!" However it is strangely compelling and I had to find out how it all ended. The climax was rather disappointing.(less)

I couldn't put this book down, I loved it so much. I'm going to have to go out and buy it so I can reread it. I couldn't wait to find out how she was going to end this series and I wasn't disappointed. I am very sad to see the characters go though, they were so original and I became very attached to them.(less)

A woman's body is discovered and Inspector Tyador Borlu of the Extreme Crime Squad is called in to investigate. Almost straight away he realizes there is more to this crime then there appears to be. It's not long until we realize it as well. There are two cities as the name suggest. But they both occupy the same space. There are two airports and treated like two separate countries. Two people from each city could be walking down the street but they would unsee each other. For someone from one city to notice anything in the other is called Breach and has serious repercussions.
The book is well written and compelling. And as complicated as it gets, it remains at heart a good murder mystery.(less)

She is deadly, has lots of toys and is in love with her boss, a vampire. But things are not going so well with her in the seventh book of the series. Vayl and Jaz arrive in Morocco looking for an artefact to free her from the demon stuck in her head. Only Vayl thinks it is 1777 and Jaz is his housekeeper. Cole as always has some great lines in the book and Bergman really comes into his own. I'm still unsure of robokitty though she does provide a good soundtrack to the novel. It must be getting quite crowded in Jaz's head, not only does she have her Granny living there, a teen version of herself, the lush, her alto ego Lucille but now a demon. What is a girl to do?(less)

I picked it up to read today while I had my morning coffee and there I was still sitting until I finished the last page. It is very well written, strangely compelling and playing it's secrets close until the very end. The characters are great and I love how they are revealed, layer after layer. I haven't read a young adult novel that I have enjoyed this much in a long time and when I consider that it was written in 1999 I am even more impressed.(less)

With Ellen's arrival the world that Jocelyn and Martin have built starts to come apart and eventually shatters.
This book is a beautifully written work of art. Her simple prose opens wide vistas of thought and reasoning. I couldn't put it down and had to read it in one sitting quite often with my heart in my throat. This is one book that will haunt me for a very long time.(less)

When I read the first book it was obvious that something was missing. I hate the practice of publishing part of a story in a separate book, especially such an integral beginning as this one is. Books should be published as a whole not the first couple of chapters taken out and published in an anthology.

They live in a room 11 feet by 11 feet and Jack sleeps in the wardrobe. This book deals with situations you never want to think about, lessened only in intensity because of the age of the narrater. It is gripping, haunting, sometimes funny and very, very claustrophobic.
Just finished rereading this for bookclub and I stand by my review. This is an excellent if somewhat uncomfortable read and the author did a fantastic job of writing horrible things from the POV of a child to young to understand what was happening. (less)

Then some people enter the house, the Nolan brothers and begin to restore it. One of them Alex is a cynical man, scarred for life from his childhood and he can see and hear the ghost. So the ghost follows him home one day. Alex meets Zoe who is everything he is not, compassionate, kind and still believes that love is out there. Sparks fly but Alex isn't going to give them a chance, knowing that he ruins everything he touches. In other words, it is up to the ghost...
I was quite surprised by this book. The characters were quite interesting with the grandmother's slow decline a bit outside the box of a romance novel. Alex wasn't saved by Zoe and the miracle of love, he had to save himself first. All in all a very nice afternoon read. Three and a half stars.(less)

The Deity has given them one year to prove themselves, if the bad they do outstrips the good they will lose their wings. The army is battling a force of demons when Zacharel notices a curious thing, the demons are swarming a particular building. Zacharel follows one demon to a room and finds a woman, Annabelle locked and shackled in a room. The building is a mental institution for the criminally insane and Annabelle has been there for four years sentenced for a crime she did not commit. For all of those years she has been attacked by demons. Annabelle convinces Zacharel to free her and take her with him which he does reluctantly. There is a lot of mystery surrounding Annabelle, she is demon marked but doesn't know how it happened. Zacharel is determined to find out more about her and fight his attraction to her but this may be one fight he cannot win.
I enjoyed this book and give it three and a half. My only problem is that the dialogue is clunky and interrupts the flow of the story. (less)
