EVE was full of action, fighting, romance, and thrill, and while ONCE tones some of those components down, I never felt bored or like it was missing something. While ONCE does end with yet another cliffhanger, there is a hint of hope in there that will carry readers over until the final novel in the trilogy.
While even isn't the same broken and naive girl from EVE, she still has her fair share of problems to deal with. She has to learn how to conquer all of her road blocks to be happy and with Caleb, but that is way easier said than done. Through it all, Eve never once backs down, even when all hope seems to be lost. By the end of ONCE, Eve knows her purpose and will not stop until it is fulfilled.
There is some crazy stuff that occurs in ONCE! It was hard to wrap my mind around some of the twists that were revealed. In ONCE, it all finally starts to come together. The questions are still there but readers can actually understand the reasons why things are happening. Even better, we learn a little more about EVE and some of her background. I am very happy with all that occurred in ONCE, and I can't wait for the final novel.
If you haven't read EVE yet, I highly recommend it. There are so many dystopians out there in the YA genre but this one can stand on its own. If you read EVE, you will definitely enjoy ONCE. It is a great continuation and I need more!(less)

H...moreJennifer Echols is one of those scarce authors that never fails to make me fall completely and totally in love with each and every story she writes. Her words are pure magic that ignites off the page and casts a hypnotic spell on the reader. While reading SUCH A RUSH, there wasn't a moment where I wasn't thinking about it, even when I would have to set it down. It was so easy to get sucked into the life of Leah that it was even harder to pull away. Thank you, Echols, for creating such pieces of art that will always make me smile.
Leah is a broken girl who is afraid to show others her weaknesses. She doesn't want sympathy or pity. All Leah wants to do is fly and get away from her sad excuse for a life. I have to say that even though flying a plane wouldn't be my way to get away, Echols makes it sound so normal and understandable for a girl like Leah. Everyone needs some way of escape, and Leah's just happens to be in the front seat of an airplane.
Leah wasn't the only one who stole the show, no matter that the novel was from her perspective. While I couldn't ever connect with Alec (and I'm not sure that the reader is meant to), Grayson had my emotions and hormones going. This guy is tortured, hot, and full of loss. He and Leah are certainly a match for each other and neither was willing to back down in tense situations. It's great when love interests can be equals.
If only Jennifer Echols was a machine that could crank out novels like SUCH A RUSH every month. Sadly, that isn't how it works, no matter how much I would want that. While there are so many novels out there that I love, Echols' novels, namely SUCH A RUSH, will always hold a special place in my heart.(less)

It starts out with a paranormal twist, but quickly turns into a story full of romance and science fiction. The description doesn't do this book justice, let me tell you. There are so many intricate layers to UNRAVELING and while it could be confusing, Norris does a great job of keeping readers on track with everything that is occurring. This book is unique in that I have yet to read anything with this concept. I was fascinated by the world that Norris created and would love to see more.
Janelle isn't your average girl. She isn't afraid to go after what she wants, nor will she stop at anything to discover the secrets her father and Ben are hiding from her. I was a huge fan of Janelle. If I was her, I definitely would want to know how I died and came back to life with Ben's help, and what her dad is hiding that may be related to her and possibly the end of the world as she knows it. She is one of the strongest heroines that I have had the pleasure of reading. She has such immense inner strength and puts her family, especially her brother Jared, before her no matter what is happening to her. Go Janelle!
Ben is another intricate character in UNRAVELING that has a mysterious past and present. He has loved Janelle since their first encounter and while she doesn't remember it, that doesn't stop him from being willing to do anything for her. But while he is very open emotionally, it was hard to see past that to who he really was and what was going on with him. I was completely shocked with some of Janelle's discoveries and wowed. My mind was opened to so many crazy possibilities and it was going a mile a minute. Props to Norris for getting me thinking!
The whole novel is such a whirlwind ride. There was never a dull moment or a time when I wasn't asking myself "What next?". There are so many different elements woven throughout the story and it was full of action, adventure, and crazy chemistry (both romantic and actual). I have fallen in love with Norris' world and I am in definite need of more. Take a chance on this one! You will have no regrets.(less)

I dove right in the second I received SHINE, and I wasn't satisfied until I had finished it all. Words cannot express how absolutely perfect SHINE is. It far surpassed my expectations.
I have been waiting so long for Aura's happy ending and for all the mysteries surrounding the Shift to be solved, but the way it all played out just made me beyond happy. After SHADE and SHIFT, I knew how crafty Smith-Ready could be and what phenomenal writer she was, but SHINE really showcases Smith-Ready's talent.
There is the perfect amount of Zach and Aura time. Some of their moments were heart-breaking, while others made my toes curl. This is their story and while they have been through so much, together they complete each other and make everything okay. I can only hope that I will find a love like Zach and Aura's.
I don't have a single negative thing to say about SHINE. If I could, I would run around singing praises at the top of my lungs for this amazingly awesome book. Everything comes together at a perfect pace and Smith-Ready leaves no questions unanswered by the final page. Smith-Ready has proved herself to be one heck of an author with the SHADE trilogy.(less)

This series is unique in that it is light-hearted and heavy at the same time, which I absolutely love. It isn't too cheesy, and at the same time it doesn't leave me feeling depressed. Full of myth and magic, DARK FROST is sure to please lovers of this awesome book series!
Gwen is back in DARK FROST and more determined than ever to avenge the wrongs of the Reapers and prevent them from unleashing the evil trickster god Loki. Gwen wouldn't survive this journey without the help of her friends Daphne, Carson, and Logan. All three bring different elements to the story that add to the world and enhance the enjoyment of the story. All the characters go through their fair share of challenges in DARK FROST and the events in DARK FROST will have a long-lasting impact on them all.
My favorite part about the Mythos Academy series is all of the lore. It brings together different mythology's and since I'm fascinated with them all, I love it! Props to Estep for being able to keep them all in order and keeping the details in check. I can't wait to learn more in the future installments!
DARK FROST is another fabulous installment in this fascinating series. The events that happen in this one definitely change things for everyone in the story and I can't wait to find out the results of it all. Why can't it be January already?(less)

He has crafted a story that will take readers on a wild ride through the darker side of Chicago where the Outfit rules. It's almost scary in how real it could be which makes it all the better! There's also a slight paranormal twist that will make readers even more intrigued and desperate for answers. If you're looking for a unique YA novel, COLD FURY is for you.
While Sara Jane starts out as a quite girl who stays in the background of the world, she quickly blossoms into the fighter she's meant to be when everything goes horribly wrong. I cannot imagine losing my family like that and dealing with the scary aftermath. The moment that she finds out exactly what her family was hiding, she takes it in with considerable inner strength and finds the will to find her family no matter what the cost. Sara Jane is my kind of girl!
While the first hundred pages are full of background information that may take a toll on readers, just know that right after that 100 mark the story kicks off big time. Goeglein will surprise readers with a considerable amount of twists and turns that will have their heads spinning. There isn't a moment of calm in Sara Jane's storm and the reader is right alongside her for her journey.
I'm genuinely surprised at how much depth COLD FURY contained. It is full of heart-wrenching moments that will have you feeling for Sara Jane and moments when there's so much tension that there isn't room to breathe. The whole tiny paranormalish aspect was fascinating on its own and I can't wait to learn more about that and more in upcoming books. COLD FURY is a winner!(less)

It is pure perfection and full of characters that become so real that you will feel like you know them. McGarry has major talent, that's for sure. By switching back and forth between Noah and Echo's perspectives, the reader will come to respect and adore both of them, no matter their faults. I would read this book over and over again if I could, it is that phenomenal.
Echo is one of the most broken girls that I have ever seen. She's blocked out what really happened when she got her scars and doesn't know how to regain the memory, or if she even really wants to. On top of that, her father married her former babysitter, her brother is dead, and she feels betrayed by the world. If I was in her position, I don't know how I would be motivated to get out of bed every day but somehow she does it. Echo has such immense inner strength and I loved watching her embrace herself and try to move forward.
Noah has just as many problems as Echo, though he deals with them much differently. He rebels against everyone and his only motivation for even trying at all is his brothers. Noah is one tortured soul and he meets his match in Echo. He is bad boy personified and I was just as weak as Echo was when it comes to him. I don't see how anyone couldn't fall for him. The best part about Noah? How much he loves his family and how he will do anything to protect those he loves.
The emotions that PUSHING THE LIMITS causes will have you picking up tissues, giggling into the pages, and blushing at Noah's candid words. Do not hesitate to pick this one up!(less)

The synopsis was as mysterious as the cover and I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I was pleasantly surprised when I found that I couldn't stop turning the pages! Griffin has created a sinister and seductive world that left me pining for more.
Araby is one of the most sad and depressed characters that I have ever read about, but I couldn't help but take a liking to her. I can see why she has gotten to such a low point in her life and I could only hope that she would find some kind of happiness. She has a very sweet and caring side that showed itself in the special moments where she could open up and be a better person. Araby has many layers to herself that I hope will be exposed in later installments.
The world in MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH is unreal. I cannot imagine living in such a place full of death and disease. How any of these characters, much less Araby, cope with everything is beyond me. The details are so rich and raw. Griffin leaves no detail left unsaid, even the more horrific scenes, but she writes them in a tasteful way. I love her writing!
I don't want to reveal too much more, because going into this one without knowing what to expect will make the reading experience much more exciting. However, I must say that I am very pleased with the love triangle in the novel. It is so hard to find a complex, unpredictable one in any genre, but by the end of the novel, I wasn't sure who I wanted for Araby. I guess I'll just have to wait to learn more about them!(less)

Full of laugh-out-loud moments and ridiculous situations, SOCIAL SUICIDE is sure to be a hit among those who loved DEADLY COOL. I absolutely love how light this series is. After reading a lot of heavy YA novels, it's great to find one that I can just sit down and relax with without having too many nail-biting moments!
Hartley is awesome. She is one of the funniest girls in the YA genre and I really enjoy reading about her adventures! Hartley is a take charge girl who doesn't go along with the easy answers. Whenever something doesn't feel right to her, she follows her hunch and while it may be right, she sure gets herself into a lot of trouble! Her friend Sam brings more hilarious moments that add to the story and make it that much more enjoyable.
While a lot of the moments in SOCIAL SUICIDE are pretty unbelievable, I still can't help but love the book. The characters are all so amusing and as their antics get crazier, the pages turn faster! I adore Halliday's writing and I will definitely be reading more from her in the future.(less)

Wolff has proven herself with frightening vampires with ulterior motives, but in BLOOD FEVER, she shows that not all vampires are evil. Sexy Scottish vampire Carden will have girls swooning and vying for him and Drew. The stakes are raised even higher in BLOOD FEVER, so if you were a fan of the first two books in the series, this one is right up your alley.
Drew is back in BLOOD FEVER and as fierce as ever. Her strong fighter spirit doesn't let anyone get her down, no matter how hurtful their words or punches. I have tremendous respect for Drew and in all honesty, she's someone I would aspire to be if I lived in a world like hers. Let's just say I am thankful that I don't though, because she goes through some seriously scary trials that had me shivering in anticipation of the outcomes.
I thought that I loved Ronan, but I have to say that Carden has surpassed him in all ways after reading BLOOD FEVER. Ronan barely has a chance to come on the scenes with this head strong vampire determined to be in Drew's life. Oh, and they're bonded so that just makes their relationship that much steamier. I think it is safe to say that Carden has won me over, no matter how yummy Ronan may be.
There is so much action in BLOOD FEVER that you won't have a moment of peace before the next problem arises. Of course, Drew kicks some serious booty in this one and while I won't say who, I will say that I was extremely happy that she finally got her revenge. The romance is as steamy as every in BLOOD FEVER, especially with Carden. WOW, he and Drew sure create some serious sparks when they're together, no matter the circumstances. I can't wait for more of Carden, that's for sure.
If you haven't yet read this series, you are sure missing out! It may appear to be just your average vampire YA on the outside, but on the inside it is so much more than that. So take a chance on this series. I can guarantee you won't regret it!(less)

It is packed full of characters that will make your heart burst from love and heartache, and plot twists that will leave you stunned. I'm still so in awe of the raw beauty of this novel and the complex simplicity of it all. Look out YA world, Sabatini is an up and coming author who is sure to go far in her writer career if this book is any indication.
Elliot is a girl so full of regret and pain and self-loathing that it's easy to feel for her. While she comes to the Obmil as a Third Timer and therefore unaware of her past life, everything hits her fast and unravels her world as she knows it. Elliot made a huge mistake in her most recent life that haunts her and greatly affects the way she sees herself. It takes the aid of sweet mesmerizing Oliver and angry, hurt Trevor to understand the power of forgiveness and love.
Without revealing too much, I just have to brag and gush about Trevor and Oliver. These two guys are total opposites and exactly what Elliot needs to help her heal and learn about herself. Trevor is just as messed up as Elliot and together these two explore themselves and what it means to live. Oliver is adorable and one of the most genuinely amazing guys I have ever read about. He is absolutely perfect for Elliot in a different way than Trevor. I wish I had an Oliver in my life!
Sabatini has crafted a gorgeous world where people go to learn from their pasts and hopefully fix them so they can be better in their next life. Honestly, TOUCHING THE SURFACE touched me so deeply that I had to stop to reflect on my life and choices and what happens after death. It takes an extremely powerful book to affect me that much that I connect it to my life at all. Whatever you do, do not pass on this book! It is one of the best that I have read in a long, long time.
TOUCHING THE SURFACE is sure to haunt readers long after reading the final line. It reveals some ugly yet beautiful things about life that will make you think. I am going to recommend this book to everyone I know and make sure all my closest friends read it. I need people to cry and laugh with me about it! (less)

With a fi...moreSo, you know how everyone has their favorite book of the year? Well, I can say without a doubt that ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND is going to be mine. With a fierce heroine, a sexy "manimal" of a hero, and multiple scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat, you can not miss out on ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND.
Alice is one strong girl with an attitude that will have you sitting up and taking notice. Even after the death of her family, she still has a personality that will not let others put her down. And yes, she has an especially vulnerable side because of her family's death that will make readers sympathetic to her cause. If there is one heroine in a book that I want to be like, it's Alice.
Alice has such an engrossing story to tell that readers will struggle with stepping away for even a moment. There is so much action going on that there won't be a single time when readers will feel bored. The pure emotion that goes through every single character in the novel is real, raw, and you won't be able to stop yourself from experiencing it right alongside them.
I think Alice's newfound best friend Kat is my absolute all-time favorite friend in a book ever. She has such spunk and personality that readers won't be able to ignore her for even a second while she's on scene. The way she and Alice click is just so amazing and they are perfect friends for each other. Kat becomes a very important person in Alice's life who helps her heal and become the person she's meant to be.
If you've read anything of Gena Showalter's, you know how talented she is in the male department. Cole is a yummylicious hunk of man who will have ladies falling all over him. He has this animalistic side to him (he's a manimal as Kat would say) that draws Alice to him like a bee to honey. His sense of responsibility and loyalty to his friends is honorable, making him all the more drool-worthy. Alice is a lucky duck, that's for sure.
There is such an intricately woven plot in ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND that it will take more than one book to unravel. ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND was told at just the right pace and will give readers enough action and answers to keep them happy until the next book, though they may go into withdrawals. If you were having any second thoughts about picking this one up, don't. I promise you that you will adore ALICE IN ZOMBIELAND as much as I do.(less)

Hurley's take on Saints is fascinating and stands on its own in the YA genre. I couldn't read fast enough! There is so much going on and with the way Hurley has written the novel, the pages fly by. I can say with absolute surety that THE BLESSED will be among my favorites of 2012.
Lucy, Cecilia, and Agnes are each broken in different ways when we are first introduced to them. They are all suffering from within with what the world has dealt them in their lives. All three seem to be beyond help until they come across these beautiful but mysterious bracelets in different ways, all linked to a guy who has secrets of his own. In THE BLESSED, their destinies will be revealed to them and they'll have to learn to come together and an unseen enemy to embrace who they are.
While it is somewhat difficult to be sympathetic towards the girls in the beginning, as the novel plays out, the girls begin to soften a bit and grow into better people. All the girls have had to deal with harsh events and destructive people in their lives, which has made them into who they are. I think my favorite of all three girls was Agnes because she has a soft side and isn't prone to incessant fighting.
There is an underlying mystery in THE BLESSED that will draw readers in and refuse to let them go. I was always trying to figure out what exactly was going on and why these girls in particular were drawn together. One figure whom I could never quite figure out was the illusive Sebastian. He is somehow connected to the girls and it takes quite a while to understand his place in their story.
THE BLESSED is a very unique YA novel in that the subject matter is something that I've never seen explored in any novel that I've read before. I don't have any knowledge of the Saints but after reading THE BLESSED, I have a better understanding of who they were and what their place was in religious history. Even if you aren't a religious person, you will still find yourself drawn into the novel and unable to stop. THE BLESSED is sure to be a hit when it releases!(less)

Full of characters that make you smile and a mystery that is woven into the very depths of the story, you won't want to put it down. While the romance is lacking and seems to go way too fast at times, the minor characters and intricate plot will make it more forgiving. If you're in the mood for a rare time travel YA, SO CLOSE TO YOU may be the book for you!
Lydia is a head strong girl who loves her grandfather with all her heart, no matter that she thinks his mind isn't exactly sane. She has heard of the Camp Hero myths all her life because of her grandfather, and while she gradually begins to think less of them, there is still some place in her mind that can't deny that something is up. It is that mindset that gets her into trouble and she finds herself hurtling through time to 1944, right before a major event that will affect her family for the rest of their lives happens.
I appreciate the way Lydia treats her grandfather. She respects him and will do anything she can to make him happy, even if she doesn't believe his stories. She has so much love in her heart for him and that makes her a great person in my book. While it was a little annoying how she got herself into really crazy situations by doing stupid things, I knew it was all for love in the end.
Her "romance" with Wes is definitely not one of my favorites of all the books I've read. I felt like it went WAY too fast and I had a hard time believing that they had fallen for each other in a matter of days. I'm sorry, but I can't believe that that happens. I was also a bit agitated that there was barely any relationship development in the beginning, but in the final half it all just happened. However, I do think that Carter can make up for my unhappiness about the romance in the sequel. There is potential but it just didn't give me warm and fuzzies in SO CLOSE TO YOU.
Readers are going to fall in love with the side cast of characters in this one! All of them, especially Mary, have such personality and they became stars of the show. Instead of staying in the background, they jumped out to front stage for me. I'm hoping for more of some of them in the sequel, but we'll see what happens!
If you are a fan of time traveling books, you are totally going to love SO CLOSE TO YOU. The characters and plot stand out and work together to make the story better as a whole. I can't wait for more from this world!(less)

It picks up right where CINDER left off, this time with the introduction of new characters that I came to enjoy just as much, if not more, than the ones introduced in the first book. Scarlet, Wolf, and Thorne are excellent additions to the dangerous world the books are set in. The action is multiplied in SCARLET and it takes us to a whole new realm of pure magnificence.
Scarlet's introduction to the cruel world that Cinder inhabits is done with such an ease that it is a surprise she wasn't in the first book. I came to adore Scarlet's inner strength and all-encompassing loyalty and love she holds for her Grandma. The interactions between her and Wolf are sweet and hesitant at the same time, making their romance that much more special. Wolf is the perfect match to Scarlet. His personality will have readers of all ages swooning with delight. His raw power accompanied with his adorable shyness makes for a man who I can't help but covet. Can I have him, please, Scarlet?
Cinder has her own role in SCARLET that will have readers intrigued. She still has much to learn about her Lunar powers and how to harness them, but she has a bit more confidence in herself after all that she's been through, making her someone readers can easily root for. The introduction of Thorne who aids Cinder in her endeavors in SCARLET comes with much-needed comedic relief to such a dark plot. He made me giggle every time he opened his mouth! Along with his humor, he is a terrible flirt which made him even more amusing. I love Thorne! And no matter what Cinder says, I think she appreciates him too.
While CINDER had a heartbreaking ending, there is more hope in SCARLET. That being said, there are new threats to Cinder's world that show just how ruthless Queen Levana can be when she wants to. She is a heartless ruler who will do anything to further her selfish agenda, no matter the cost to her own people. She made me want to slap her SO HARD. What an evil woman. And with further developments and secrets that come out in SCARLET, readers will learn just how far Levana will go when she does not get her way.
SCARLET is a phenomenal installment to the Lunar Chronicles. Readers will be heartbroken when the book finally comes to an end, if only because they can't get their fix of this world for a whole other year. 2014, get here faster! We need more Cinder, Kai, Scarlet, Wolf, and Thorne! (less)
