Cotterill is a genius, what can I say? His unlikely hero is perfect, the setting in an alternate universe that is 1970s Laos, although this one has a dark venture into the horror that was Cambodia. Spooky and funny, a great read. (less)

Glorious writing, as one would expect from a Booker winner, and the characters are engaging, but even gorgeous prose can't completely overcome the author's need to put in every tiny fascinating snippet of research she'd uncovered (and there is a LOT of research here.) Makes for a stunning informative tour of England from 1895 to 1918, but also for a novel that's a bit more work than perhaps it needs to be.(less)

Writing that's both perfectly burnished yet smoothly casual, Stabenow has such a great voice--the reader seems to be seated on Kate Shugak's shoulder listening to her inner thoughts. And man oh man, I feel that I know precisely how it feels to be charged by a large, angry bear. Wow!(less)
