Fans of the series won't be let down by this book, however new readers would definitely benefit from reading the first two books, if they want to avoid spoilers for those books.
I believe I like this book as much as the first because it shows a progression of the main characters and actions taken in previous books having repercussions in this one in a way that I find refreshing....more

Parasite isLoved the story! I love novels that keep me up past my bedtime because I just need to read the next chapter. This was one of those novels.
Parasite is the first in a duology, that is to say a two book series, about a medical breakthrough that revolutionizes futuristic medicine. A world where nobody suffers from allergies, accidentally miss their medication, or suffer from germ related diseases. A low cost medical treatment available to the rich and poor, all in the form of a tiny pill, taken every two years, which grows a tiny genetically modified parasite in your intestines.
But what if those parasites decide they're tired of riding around in automated meat cars and want to get into the driver seat?
Parasite is full of everything fans of Mira Grant's previous series, Newsflesh, has come to love. Mad science, conspiracy, relatable human (and surprisingly relatable inhuman) characters, and much more. A believable world built around a fantastic premise that keeps the pages turning.
If I have one complaint it is that one of the primary mysteries is rather easy to guess but remains a secret to the characters for for most of the novel, which some readers may find frustrating. It is not unlike when you're screaming at the person in the horror movie to stop being stupid and realize that they're in a horror movie, but they just won't listen. That being said, the book is hardly predictable. The ending revealed several interesting twists that I personally feel more than made up for the primary mystery being somewhat easy to figure out, and will certainly make the second book very interesting.
If I have two complaints, which I really don't, it is that this story is very much the first in a pair of stories, and having to wait a year for the sequel will be somewhat excruciating. Really it's a compliment in the disguise of a complaint and one should not simply "wait for both books to be out". You'll get much more enjoyment out of discussing what might happen next with your friends, then having to sit there and let them talk in code about the book in order not to spoil you, believe me you.
Overall I highly recommend this book to all Mira Grant fans. If you've never read any of Mira Grant's amazing mad-science fiction thrillers/horrors, you could do worse than starting with this book. If you're a fan of mad science, sci-fi thrillers, dogs, "lovable" psychopaths, and conspiracies, this novel is right up your alley....more
