(Even Lucien had more back story than Tamlin) It is because the author never intended for us to completely fall in love with Tamlin.
This isn't a spoiler because it hasn't happened yet and is just a speculation but I will bet every book on my bookshelf that Rhysand is her "bonding mate" & the person Feyre will end up with, not Tamlin.
That is why in their last scene together Rhysand saw something that "shocked" him. That's why Maas had to find a reason to keep Feyre seeing him once a week for a month with the deal she made with him. That's why Feyre describes him as the most beautiful person she's ever seen. That's why the conversations she had with Rhys, though few, held a thousand times more meaning than any she had with Tamlin. It's why Rhys has such a big part in keeping Feyre alive, it's why he saves her, it's why his character is more flawed and layered than Tamlin's. Tamlin as we see him in book one is too good, too safe almost, and has a simple back story. Rhys on the other hand has flaws with his character that the author could play with, develop, and explore with in future books.
Tamlin and Feyre's relationship was based on mutual want to keep those they're responsible for alive and the burdens that come with it. And physical attraction. But that was all there was. They love each other but they are NOT in love with each other.
I think that's why I felt something important was missing for the entire book and why the beginning moved SO slowly with plot development. (And the reason for it being SLOW had nothing to do with it being a fantasy novel). Harry Potter books have you on the edge of your seat throughout all the "slow moving" parts.I actually enjoy slow parts as much as the action-packed ones in the fantasy genre.
This was really different though.
It felt like the writer was struggling to come up with a way to pass the time between the action and the build up to plot twists being revealed. Instead of focusing on weaving the threads of the story in the meantime decided to fill it with repetition of tropes from the previous chapter and scenes that could have been completely taken out and would not affect the story in any way shape or form (if a scene is not progressing in some small way - even if it's character development - it's usually pulled out).
ACTUAL SPOILER BELOW:
Am I the only one to find how inconsistent Feyre's character was? Half the time I didn't know what she wanted for her family, for herself. One minute she feels ashamed about killing these scary monster-fairies in the woods and the next she has the ability to murder two innocent fairies? There were so many things that felt really inconsistent with Feyre in general. ...more

This has got to be the most cliche boring historical romance novel I've ever read. The dialogue is so stilted too. Nothing flows the right way. I just couldn't wait to start another h. romance novel after this one to remind myself how good the genre really is and not base it on this book alone. Will not be reading anymore Julie Garwood. ...more

I can't go through a whole other book of "I love Maxon No wait I love Aspen! No Maxon". Seriously her and Maxon are the same with their idecisiveness. So apparently to America she can cheat all she wants but she has a problem when Maxon does it??? Wtf. Both irritated me in this book. I still don't get the whole rebel thing. The ending left everything right back to where they were in the beginning...not much change. Just found out what a complete idiot Maxon is. :/...more
