The chapter on Children's Literature as Repertoire has an interesting section (The Idyllic and the Real) which covers the pastoral idyll as "a nostalgic form of literature." It would be interesting to explore, in barnyard genre, the way that "in less interesting children's books, writers create idylls by simply leaving things out....But in more interesting books, the ironies are internal and deliberate, and the result is an ambivalence about the relative values of innocence and experience, the idyllic and the mundane" (211).(less)

Great book. Written by a teacher at the Manhattan New School, shows that substantive classroom interviews and investigations can be done with first graders who are just learning how to write. I find many teacher books not written by classroom teachers to be technical, dry, or overly procedure-oriented. They feel top-down, as if it's the school principal writing about "back when I was a teacher, I did such and such...", trying to cloak department of ed requirements and pass them off to classroom teachers as good ideas or best practices. This book does NOT do that, it is clearly a teacher writing to other teachers and out of love for the work. If you need ideas for family or community studies in social studies, for writing instruction, inquiry-based learning, or are looking for a sign that good teaching happens in NYC public schools, this book goes down happily, leaves lots of "learning residue." I am sure I would reach for it again if I had a copy on my reference shelf.(less)
