Then she meets Todd on a summer family vacation and grows more than she thought she ever would. In their first meeting she learns that Todd has cancer. Todd is unique from the very start. He is very open and doesn't hold back. In a way Natalie's and Todd's meeting is perfect timing for each one of them, for many different reasons. Their relationship travels through many emotional roller coasters, all of which make this novel amazing.
Beware you will have shed tears. It is hard not cry while reading this novel. Our teens today go through many emotions and Julie Duck includes many of these different emotions beautifully. I wish this novel was around when I was a teen. Natalie is on the verge of becoming a woman, and not just in the physical and sexual way, but emotionally as well.
I did feel that the novel started too quickly. Within the first chapter not only do Natalie and Todd meat but Todd tells her he has cancer. I would have liked to see a bit more character development for Natalie. However, that being said after reading it all I can understand why it started as quickly as it did - Todd's character lived life to the fullest, without wasting time. In the end I came away from this novel emotionally drained and moved, all in the best ways. (less)

Then one day she receives a DVD in locker, showing her boyfriend cheating on her. Giselle looks to Alex for support who gives her that and much much more at prom. Giselle learns that there is much more to Alex, who is not a human but a Prince of a Vampire race. Giselle also learns that Alex has had plans for her for some time now, literally serving as the savior to his race and a new bloodline. While Alex has always been gentle and loving with Giselle, she quickly learns he has a completely different side to him...
" 'Giselle, I have chosen you to be by my side. It is you who will redeem my bloodline. But you must come willingly. I cannot force you, but if you decide against me then I will have to destroy you.' "
With danger waiting outside, and inside her new life, Giselle learns how to live her new life with many expectations smothering her.
There are many things to like about this novel, while at the same time there are a few things that hold this novel back a bit (but not too much!). Giselle's change to becoming a 'half-vampire' was too reminiscent of Bella's change in "Twilight". I also would have liked to get more emotions and thoughts from Giselle when Alex does not give her a choice in becoming 'reborn'. All that being said, Julieanne's writing style is beautiful and flows with great ease. While the length is on the short side, I have read plenty of novels to know that if the writing is horrible, no matter how short a novel may be it can seem too long. Julieanne's novel is perfect in this - it is not too long but not too short, with a wonderful premise, hot scenes (and I do mean hot!!), and seamless writing. I for one cannot wait for the sequel!(less)

While what I call 'paranormal magic' makes for an entertaining read, 'earth' magic is a part of literature that does not seem to be explored as much. Shauna Granger has excelled at exploring this. At the same time Granger has found the perfect balance of 'earth' magic and teenage reality - you can't help but love Shayna's emotional roller coaster in her attraction to Jensen.
Shauna Granger's ability in character development is phenomenal! Each character, including secondary, are fleshed out perfectly - Granger does not rush to develop her characters, but takes her time, allowing them to show you who they are versus the writer telling you. I love Shayna, Jodi and Steven - each one is very unique but would not be the same without the other one. I love how Granger made this essential to the plot and development. I ALSO fell in love with their banter - she really made their friendship REAL. Granger's style of writing also makes this read very enjoyable and timeless - her writing creates a wonderful and relaxing flow in which you are not rushed to read . I really took my time devouring every page and word, and not because I could not understand her writing or the plot, but because I loved it everything about it THAT MUCH!
One of my favorite things in life is finding new authors who show great promise, especially when they their works are part of a series. Shauna Granger's Elemental series is one of those that every YA fan should read!(less)
