Though technically, based on the how the BDB series went, this is supposed to be Payne and Manuel story, I wouldn't say that. There are others' stories, and other couple(s) besides these two. There are Butch-Vishous, Vishous-Jane, Layla-Qhuinn, Qhuinn-Blay, Blay-Sax; not to mention Xcor and Throe, de la Cruz and Veck. In romance department, this may yet be the most busy volume with some steamy scenes, bromance, m/m, m/f/m, and bdsm involving some of the characters I'd rather not mention. Maybe this is why why it got most voted as Best Romance on 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards. :)
Some alert though: those of you not following the series from Dark Lover up to Lover Mine, the story continuation and characters development might be a bit difficult to follow. And if you're also a reader of JRW's Fallen Angel's series, the aforementioned Veck is the main character's of JRW's Envy: A Novel of the Fallen Angels
Seeing as this BDB story still continues on - the soon released will be Lover Reborn - I strongly believe some of the above couples will have their follow-up stories (I bet on Payne-Manuel, Qhuinn-Blay; or rather, I hope. :D ) (less)

I get more of what Kit and JX actually have in mind about each other and, especially for Kit, about himself; his anxiety, insecurity, and where/why were those coming from. Holmes may look on the outside as flippant, cynical, stand-offish, shallow and prone to drama. In actuality he's quite fiercely loyal to his friends, even when they betrayed him, has deep feeling for his partner, and really intelligent.
Wow, I really sound like a fan here! And I am; a big fan of Kit Holmes that is. It's really interesting hearing Kit's thinking, plotting, assuming and deducting from page to page. Just like before, he's the one who actually put two and two together and solve the mystery, farfetched though it seems to others.
I guess that means I'm officially a big fan of Josh Lanyon now. I'm really looking forward to next installment of this series. There will be, I hope... :D(less)

While I'm happy that finally - FINALLY - the two stubborn/idiot(?) of ex best-friends end up together, the way the connection finally bound...? Not so much.
(view spoiler)[For me this book served more as intro to further plots on BDB world (what's with the many characters' stories with still open issues at the end of the book) with Qhuinn and Blaylock (and Layla) thrown in to spice it up.
If you've read this series from the start, you know this happened once with Z; Bella gone missing on the #book2 and #book3 started with Z looking and finally found her. I'm guessing Ms. Ward going with the same route with Assail and Marisol. But with so many other characters and open issues in this book alone, I find it a bit exhausting. I don't know what to expect with The King after this... (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>(less)
