This is a paranormal romance with a definite urban fantasy feel. It takes place in a dark Seattle where the feud between the Kivati and the Drekar, both powerful races of shapeshifters, ever rages. Kayla has come to Seattle to find out what happened to her sister. She doesn't believe the story that her sister died of a drug overdose. On her mission to find out the truth, she is approached by Hart, a wolf shifter, who is looking for a necklace he believes Kayla's sister stole from his boss.
The book is a bit dark and focuses a little more on the story than the romance, but not enough for me to feel like the romance was lacking in any way. The side characters were just as fascinating as the main couple. Brady gave just enough of a tease into these characters' lives to make me really really look forward to reading their books, especially Corbette and Lucia's. They have the most complicated relationship. How will they finally come together? Apparently I will have to wait until February of 2014 when Hearts of Chaos is published to find out. That makes me a little sad.

This is a sign with vampires of coming death. Carling has spent much time trying to find a cure, but unsuccessful, has accepted her fate. She has pushed all emotions and connections away.
In the previous book Rune, a Wyr grypon, made a bargain with Carling to save a friend's life. Now he travels to her to make good on that bargain. Their first meeting is intense and Carling finds she does not like the emotions he brings forth in her. She tries to push him away, but after he finds out about her fate, he won't budge. He decides to help her not die. Rune uses humor, kindness, and ruthlessness to bring out Carling's emotions, and to stop her from just giving up.
I really loved the build up, both of their feelings for each other and of finding a cure for Carling. The fadings and how Rune becomes involved with them was very unique. Unfortunately, I found the ending very jolting and sudden once they think they have found a way to save Carling. The climax was too vague and didn't satisfy the build up.

I really did enjoy this story as much as the first book in this series. Harrison has created a fun world with awesome characters. I couldn't quite give it the full 5 stars. From the first book, I pictured Niniane (Tricks) a little differently - less of a cryer I guess. I should probably give her a break; she was in a very stressful situation. She does cry, though - a lot.
But I loved Tiago in all his alpha brutishness. He is one of those characters that scares everyone, is not nice to anyone, but can't help but be sweet and caring towards Niniane. Swoon-worthy, I tell you.
As for the story - Niniane, the last of the Dark Fey royal family, is to take the throne after her uncle (who had murdered the rest of her family to take the throne 200 years before), is killed. Of course there are people who do not want her to take the throne and she must deal with assassination attempts. This is where Tiago comes in, to keep her safe until the coronation. Easier said than done when you have not just Dark Fey involved, but also vampires and Wyr. Tiago, himself, is a Wyr who can shape shift into a giant thunderbird. I really liked Tiago and Niniane's interactions. When she was not crying, their interactions were funny and sweet and sexy. The only thing that creeped me out was when he called her "young lady". Ew.
Rune and Carling's story is next. From the little we learn about Carling in this book, I am anxious to learn more about her past.(less)
