So they’ve made it into a film, but before you watch the film, I urge you to read the book. The book is always better than the film, right. And this one is no exception. The Hunger Games is set in the future in post-apocalyptic North America and is about a girl name Katniss who takes the place of her little sister for her District in the 74th Hunger Games. Each year each District, of which there are 12, sends one boy and one girl to compete to the death I these games. The winner being the one who comes out alive. It is aired as a reality TV show, loved by the sadistic residents of the Capitol but horrific for the people of the Districts who have to watch and fear for their children who go off each year and are mainly killed. Katniss is only 16 years old, she is a great character and one you cannot help have empathy with having suffered the tragic loss of her father, she has rebelled against the rules and has been hunting animals in the forest to feed her family. She is used to hunting and is a survivor but can she survive the Hunger Games? Peeta, the chosen boy and Katniss head to the capitol to begin. It does sound a bit violent and it is children die but when reading it isn’t morbid. The characters are great and a lot of fun, which brightens the story. I love that the heroine isn’t a pathetic damsel in distress type but a feisty, kick ass and can hold her own type. We need more of these in young adult books. I can guarantee once you pick this book up you will not be able to put it down until you find out if Katniss will survive or not. It is an action packed, keeping you at the edge of your seat type book. Suzanne Collins is an incredible writer and has brought these characters to life in a way you will fall in love with them and feel what they feel. This book is amazing, one of my favourites to date. ...more
Of Witches and Warlocks, is a series of books written by my favourite author Lacey Weatherford. She is an amazing and talented writer, not to mentionOf Witches and Warlocks, is a series of books written by my favourite author Lacey Weatherford. She is an amazing and talented writer, not to mention a wonderful wife and fantastic mother to six, yes six children. How she finds the time to write as well I will never know, but I am grateful she does.
Lacey has created a strong, role model worth, protagonist called Portia Mullins. Portia is an ordinary teenager, living an ordinary life until she reaches her sweet sixteen birthday. Instead of being given a dress or some frivolous gift, she is told she is a witch. A very powerful witch at that. She is a descendant form a long line of witches and warlocks on her father’s side.
Her Grandmother is the high priestess of a coven, in which she meets Vance Magnum. A leather clad, motorbike riding bad boy. Who turns out to be more than her soulmate, they are meant to be together.
The chemistry and romance is breathtakingly deep, as Portia struggles to balance love, life, magic, family and being a teenager.
What I love most about the fact that Portia was a witch, was that she was a real witch that can do some really cool magic. Not just, mix some herbs together and cure a cold. She can move things, blast things and just about anything. However, she needs to learn them and more importantly learn how to control her powers.
Their bond is put to the test when Vance’s past catches up with him. Will they survive it? Sparks will fly and not just between Vance and Portia.
This book is refreshing, different from the others out there. I would rank this book one of the best paranormal young adult books out there. It appeals to readers both young and old. I will read it over and over again. You won’t be disappointed. ...more
