It's one of those reads that every reader will go away and try to research and reread for the understanding of it and will still differ on it I think. When reading the story i was finding myself reflecting on the story The Metamorphosis. A creepy short story.(less)
"I said I meant I was just doing my job, followin' the holy precepts laid down in the Bible. "It's what I'm supposed to do, you know, to punish the heck out of people for bein' people. To coax 'em into revealin' theirselves, an' then kick the crap out of 'em. And it's a god-danged hard job, Rose, honey, and I figure that if I can get a little pleasure in the process of trappin' folks I'm mighty well entitled to it."
This excerpt from Thompson's novel sums up the sheriff who's a sociopathic murderer. This story is similar to his other novel The Killer inside Me which was a better novel and the sheriff in that was more screwed up. This novel is funny at times. There's quite a few racist characters in this story I suppose the writer is trying to tell you how it was in a town back in the old days. This sheriff is not short of tricks and is smarter than he let's out. You not going to get grand story telling but a story about one dirty dog life in it's truest form.(less)

The prose is ordinary, story picks up momentum halfway and theres few pages where things get gory but large part spent in seedy streets and bars of Tokyo. You also get to learn bit about Japanese culture. I felt the end was stopped short that really left me bit disappointed with the story.
“Miso soup?” “Yeah. I’m really interested in miso soup. I ordered it at a little sushi bar in Colorado once long ago, and I thought it was a darned peculiar kind of soup, the smell it had and everything, so I didn’t eat it, but it intrigued me. It had that funny brown color and smelled kind of like human sweat, but it also looked delicate and refined somehow. I came to this country hoping to find out what the people who eat that soup on a daily basis might be like."(less)

There was one too many rants about the world and politics. For a book thats talked about in mainstream media alot packs quite alot of explicit sexual situations which the cover should have a warning to readers.(less)

In the movies most of the time you find sequel is not as great as the first and that theory holds ground with trilogies i find most of the time. The author could have done better maybe take some of the third book and made book 2 longer without this idea of making Harry potter continuations. It was disappointing to see series end in this manner which had something really good working, also alot of readers voted this as best of 2010 by far mine was Full Dark No Stars. (less)

I liked his debut novel was more frightening and ghostly here he writes in a different style and mixes the plot around switching from past to the present. Take care because no dark secret is safe when the Devils around he can see back into all you're Buggery! The story develops with great momentum it picks up and takes off in tension, a hell-bound tale. I would give it 5 stars but i don't want to please the little DEviL. Review alsohere.(less)

I am shocked publishers allowed this to be released it was too long and drawn out mediocre and dull and written badly. Expected more due to chit chat from the media this is crime thriller genre at it's weakest. I advise to stay well away from no.2 go see the movie version of this and give 3rd book a try.(less)

This is a dark atmospheric supernatural thriller. I can see why Maberry was awarded the Bram Stoker award for this, he's a great writer really immerses you in the blood pulsing thrill, a real page-turner. The story plays out like an episode of Supernatural. I am hooked, line and sinker! He's developed a really good protagonist and characters like The Bone Man, Tow-truck Eddie, and The Dark Man all written in a good prose.
"Evil don't die it just waits"
that's what the Boneman says in this story and it's more gripping thriller stuff than being a haunting or gory story. You feel we only get glimpse of a lot of his characters in this book due to it being a trilogy I am looking forward to reading Bad Moon Rising the second book of the PIne Deep series.
"Hells a coming and we all gotta learn the blues" "Dark Hollow was as dark as a tomb and as inviting as an open, beckoning grave; yet there were worse places in Pine Deep, places where the shadows were darker still and the air hummed with a malevolent tension. But these places were never named and they were never thought about by choice. Dark Hollow, a doorway to those other places, remained as the darkest place known consciously to the people of the town, and in its Way it was dark enough."

There is sadness and happiness, racism and equality, immaturity and maturity, injustice and redemption. Atticus is a man we could all love and look up to a grounded just and fair man he sees beyond race and finds the goodness in people. His cook Calpurnia Is honest good black lady who you just gotta love in this story, she works for a nice family who are about to go through some obstacles and testing times. A lot of the story is told through a young girl and is enjoyable to see things from a young perspective for example this excerpt... "There was a man Dill had heard of who had a boat that he rowed across to a foggy island where all these babies were; you could order one— “That’s a lie. Aunty said God drops ‘em down the chimney. At least that’s what I think she said.” For once, Aunty’s diction had not been too clear.
"You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women—black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men."
“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
Some trivia about the book and movie... Finch was writer Harper Lee's mother's maiden name. Despite the novel winning the Pulitzer Prize, the studios were not interested in buying up the film rights as they deemed it lacking in action, there was no love story and the villain doesn't get a big comeuppance. Producer Alan J. Pakula disagreed however and persuaded director Robert Mulligan that it would make a good film. Together they were able to convince Gregory Peck who readily agreed.
Truman Capote, who grew up with Harper Lee, also knew the inspiration for "Boo" Radley, and had planned to base a character on him in one of his short stories. After seeing how well the character was realized in Lee's novel, however, he decided against it.
