The White Queen is based on the real life story of 15th century Elizabeth Woodville, a widow with two young boys, who miraculously becomes the Queen of England during the Wars of the Roses. I loved this historical novel!!! Queen Elizabeth is a true heroine, a woman of courage and action! This is my first novel by Philippa Gregory, one of the most coveted writers of this genre. I've wanted to read one of her books for some time with my interest in historical fiction and British history (many of you know me for my spiritual predilection and passion, but my second favorite genre of books is historical novels-- as I'm writing one myself!).
I wanted to give a snippet of Elizabeth's voice, so I chose the passage above. From the first page to the last, I was held completely engrossed in this soulful, magical and compelling story! I only have one disclaimer for my fellow readers and that is that The White Queen reads more like mainstream historical fiction than literary historical fiction, the latter is more my thing. The writing is simple, light and fast-paced, very much plot driven. The pages go by fast and furiously! Still, I found it riveting and wildly entertaining. I love being lost in another time and place while following the path of a powerful woman in history. It's all great fun! ...more

He had incredible stature, power, was incredibly handsome with an unmistakeable alluring presence. He served as British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire for over 30 years and single handedly saved the Empire from dismemberment and invasion from France, Russia and all the other imperial powers of the times. This book is a compilation of his writings on the topic of the "Eastern Question," how the Ottoman Empire, an Empire that was built and bound by Koranic principles, could function and survive in a Western World. I found it quite dry, though Stratford Canning was anything but, known as a passionate, strong man with unyielding principles. His biographies are far more compelling, as is his life, which was quite dramatic, than his own writings.
I am reading it as research for my historical novel, and don't believe it is reading for a non academic, or lay reader, but the life of Stratford Canning certainly is compelling for anyone interested in the history and times of the Napoleonic Era....more

I read this book as research for my Ottoman Empire historical novel, but the letters are fascinating for anyone interested in the international relations of Britain at this time or anyone interested in Ottoman/British relations during the Napoleonic Era.
