Jujur gw sampai ambil napas panjang setelah selesai baca Sudut Mati. Good job, Tsugaeda :)
Which is lead me to the next question, apa akan ada buku tentang Makarim Ghanim lagi ya? :P).
After Furies of Calderon succesfully blown me away, the next installment of the Codex Alera series, Academ's Fury apparently did the same. Thi5 stars
After Furies of Calderon succesfully blown me away, the next installment of the Codex Alera series, Academ's Fury apparently did the same. This book, despite its thick and tasty length, able to awake me from my reading slump for almost 2 months. As expected from Jim Butcher, with his vivid story telling and his story crafting that feel like magic, more than any fury crafting that happen in this book.
Two years after the event in Furies of Calderon, Second Battle of Calderon Valley that happen between Aleran and their barbarian enemy, The Marat, Tavi of Calderon now become a page for First Lord of Alera, Gaius Sextus. While he also pursue his career as Cursor (aka First Lord's Messenger) in Academ. Don't worry, the story didn't fall in Harry Potteresque story type. Quite opposite in fact, since Tavi's study just shown a little and he already in his final phase. Since he's furyless, aka can't conjure his own fury. Tavi considered as freak and have enemy that remind me of Draco Malfoy &co. Just meanier. Lucky for Tavi, he also have his comrade that remind me of Ron and Hermione in Ehren and Gaelle. Afraid not, this doesn't mean Jim Butcher copy Rowling blatantly, because Tavi also befriend Antillar Maximus who will help Tavi in so many problems that the boy manage.
Like usual, Butcher told story in this book from so many person narative. Beside Tavi, there are Bernard and Amara's who know didn't shy away to show affection to each other despite Amara's worry that she didn't suitable to be Bernard's wife. Quite romantic, and I never mind romance subplot. I'm glad that Butcher insert it so it make the story make sense. Then, there was Gaius Sextus himself with his loyal captain, Miles. Butcher also told story from Isana, Bernard's sister that from the latest event now become a first woman steadholder. A fact that endanger Isana, since women still considered as second class citizen in Alera. Isana herself think that Gaius decision to make her steadholder more like politic and she hate that Gaius took Tavi from her. But Isana can't run from her destiny and sooner or later, she must go to the Imperial Capital to walk between a snake nest that is High Lords and their cohorts. While she must choose, who she must allied with. Even with enemy itself.
The problem is now bigger than the first book, because while Aleran kinda have peace with the Marat, now a sinister malice crept and tend to threat Aleran's peace. The Marat warn that the Vord, a parasitic creature have escape from their hide and ready to take all Aleran, Marat or any living alike. They are dangerous, since people who possessed by the Vord will be like zombies. The threat begin in Calderon, and Bernard, Amara and the Marat chieftain, Doroga must join force to drive the Vord from reaching further while their resources are limited.
Meanwhile, Tavi also have big problem because Gaius health faltering and he must cover his Lord's condition if he didn't want the Empire in uproar and some High Lords that already conspired to coup d'etat will attack Imperial when they see a chance. Isana is frantic to reach Gaius, but she almost assassinated and the result is make her somehow a traitor. On the other side, the Canim, a beast man clan that have thin peace with Aleran have strange moves toward Alera, even their Ambassador already warn Tavi about that. And without Tavi realize, the Vord already reach Imperial and prepare the next move.
Such a busy event that happen in Academ's Fury! No wonder this book is 700 pages long! But, Butcher's writing style able to make me impatient to read pages after pages. Make me want to end this book in one sitting. Sure there some part that Butcher like to prolong, like war between the Vord and Calderon. The despair is apparent and make me want to pull my hair because I want Bernard and Amara to win while their source are limited. I want Gaius just wake up and send forces to help Calderon and finish the war, because yeah, the battle with the Vord is frustated to read. Frustated but still I enjoy it nonetheless.
What I love is how Butcher portrayed women in this book. He write them not as secondary characters, but as individual that strong and standing in their own feet. From Amara, Isana, then Serai, a courtesan that more that it seems. I really like Serai because she help Isana to understand how the politic in Imperial work. How to thread carefully between the thread of lies and deceits. Even Tavi have his own match in Kitai, the Marat girl that also daughter of Doroga. There is also High Lady Placida Aria who have high authority and charisma, provide a useful help for Tavi when he's in problem. And then, there is Lady Invidia Aquitaine, a lady that also cunning like her husband who become enemy to First Lord, or even more cunning and calculated. Her power is so great and her tactic is delightful to read. Butcher sure know how to write women characters. Not place them as victim, but as a character and that a plus for this book.
I can go on and on about this book, but I think I already write too long. I just wanna said that if you love epic fantasy, you must read this. If you like a zero to hero kind of story, you must read this. If You like fantasy with a bunch of ass kicking heroines, you must read this.

Another book by Nalini Singh that simply left me in an awe...
I wish she keep writing Guild Hunter! I know that some of her fans prefer Psy-Changeling or new readers love her Rock Kiss series (is it the right title? I forget it, lol!), but the fact that I always read ANY NEW INSTALLMENT of Guild Hunter ASAP is a reason why I loved this series so much. Guild Hunter which rich in detail and world building, harsh but can be tender sometimes.
Gosh, so much things happen! I think Enigma is better than Shadow, at least it give us insight into angel world. And this book bring readers to travel around the world. From a haunted Beijing -Zhou Lijuan's citadel-. a forgotten city, Amanat that located in Japan, to the dessert of the Middle East, and then to the wilderness that is Africa. Enigma maybe is the most adventurous book compared to another installment, and that's why it's never a dull moment when read this.
Gawd, I love both Naasir and Andromeda! I admit that I'm a little bit skeptical with Andromeda when knowing that she's a librarian of sort. How wrong I am! Yep, she's a scholar, but Andromeda is also a warrior. Being Charisemnon's bloodline, she will do everything she can to defend herself. No, she's not a damsel in distress, even when she abducted by Lijuan, she can bring herself together without doing anything foolish. TSTL and Andromeda is very much antithesis, and I love that because Andromeda is a historian too, her curiosity matched mine. A woman after my heart.
I like that even it's apparent that Naasir desire Andromeda, but since she take a vow of celibacy, he respect her to do so. And it's kinda cute, heartwarming too. I know this kind of a trope, a virgin heroine with much more mature but less civilized hero. But, never, ever Naasir pulled alpha manliness to Andromeda. He's an alpha, but like his sire Raphael, he know how to act alpha while still respect their women. I like how Nalini handle this issue and how the relationship between Naasir and Andromeda is slow but sure. Okay, there are some saccharine dialogue that will give you diabetes, but I don't care!!! Any saccharine words written by Nalini is my crack! :D
I miss Raphael! And Elena too! ;( And no, I don't want to Illium and Aodhan become a romantic couple, lol! Call me conservative, but why two male characters can't have a bromance? If two female charas can be a best friend, why not for the men? The epilogue, while short, already tell everything that will happen in the future. I like how Nalini build the conflict about Cascade one by one. I think it's her strength. It's what make readers want to read another Guild Hunter books. And Lijuan? That very very nasty archangel, she still not done with the world. Yet. So many secrets that waiting to be unravel.
Dang, no info for next book :(. While for Enigma, it's clear from Shadows that Naasir will get his own story, I don't think that Illium or Venom or Aodhan will soon get their own story told. Especially Venom that just have little role, maybe he will just get a novella? Wishful thinking that the story will be back to Raphael and Elena again! :D
For my earlier comment, you can check it below :)
(view spoiler)[Yay, Naasir!! :D Already guess that he will get his own story after his major role in Archangel's Shadow, and yeah, I prefer to read his rather than Illium or Venom.
But, I really miss Elena and Raphael :(. Both are the heart of this series and even the side charas books is good, books about them is much better. Please back again to this couple, Nalini! >.<
The sleeping Archangel in Persia, maybe Alexander. Do that mean Favashi somehow ally herself with Lijuan?
And...who's this Andromeda chick? Never read about her before, so I guess she's a really brand new character. Well I hope she's not a timid angel or archetype (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more

A must have book if you love myth or merely curious with myth around the world. With luxurious paper (I don't know what kind of paper they used. Like paper that used in calendars) and also filled with so many illustration (all are in color), divided into 4 parts, this "bible" will whet your appetite for any mystical creature or spirits. Can be used if you write fantasy type of story, but the information that this book have kinda like summary thingie. For the complete info, you can research it on net or combine with another book that have same category.

Halah, merinding disko aja ngga :v. Adanya malah pengen nabokin si tokoh utamanya Li Lan. Ni cewe dah naif, sembrono pula. Entah kenapa sikapnya kadang sama kayak Bella Swan. Bahkan hubungan dia sama Er Lang kok agak2 mirip Bella-Edward, dimana Li Lan ini damsel in distress banget dan Er Lang itu knight in a shining armor dia. Romancenya emang gampang ditebak sebenarnya, sejak awal Li Lan ketemu sama Er Lang, udah tahu sama siapa Li Lan bakal melabuhkan (eaaa, melabuhkan, emang kapal :v) hatinya.
Adanya malah ngambang :v
Terjemahannya bagus, as expected from the translator (ini aku jujur yeee Zai, bukan karena samting hahaha).
Beeh kenapa pula disensor? -.- Saat tahu alasannya disensor, malah jadi penasaran kenapa sampai disensor segala, apa yang begitu vulgarnya sampai dihaluskan saja mungkin tetep kadar hawtnya terasa? #eaaa. Kayaknya mesti baca versi aslinya, soalnya asli penasaran dot com adegannya kayak gimana. Mungkin bagi gw sih biasa aja #heh :)))
Kalau suka nonton film - film hantu China jaman 90an (guilty pleasure banget, hehehe), bakal bisa menikmati buku ini. Cuma, ya sabar ya baca tokoh utama ceweknya. Kalau ngga, pasti pingin jitak kayak gw, hihihihi :))
Makasih ya Neng :* ...more
Terlihat gede sih awalnya, TAPI INI DI LUAR NEGERI.
Thanks a lot Mba T yang udah berbagi pengalamannya melakukan perjalanan keliling dunia. Ayo traveling lagi biar makin banyak cerita serunya :D ...more
It's official that Trinity will always be my favorite travel blogger <3
Mungkin karena emang bukan tipe orang suka baca travelogue yang serius (makaIt's official that Trinity will always be my favorite travel blogger <3
Yang abis baca TNT 4 pasti tahu kalau Trinity plan buat trip round the world #RTW.
Fotonya pun menurut gw agak kurang...kurang banyak maksudnya, wkwkwkwkwk.
Now, its time for me to continue to read book #2. Biasa, bacanya di kantor sambil magabut :P ...more

Yah, sayangnya lagi sih, chemistry Cecile sama Tristan kayak maksa. Dari yang antagonis, berantem mulu, Tristan songong mulu walau aslinya pura - pura, lalu langsung menyatakan cinta satu sama lain. Yaelah anak muda :|.
I am a polite, non threatening kind of dragon with excellent manners. Horns are hidden, tail is tucked awa4.5 stars
My Indonesian review posted here:
I am a polite, non threatening kind of dragon with excellent manners. Horns are hidden, tail is tucked away, fangs covered. I would never do anything cruel, like stab a man with a knofe about ten times to get him answer a question
If Kate Daniels and The Edge have a child, their child is Hidden Legacy.
Bottom line...don't say you are a Ilona Andrews rabid fans if you still not read it yet (actually, I still not read some of Kate Daniels too :p)
Ami once ask me to become "guinea pig" when we chat about this book. But, seems like she beat me first, because I order the paperback and must wait 2 weeks. Suck, I know. Then when the book arrived, I mustgo to work trip. I bring Burn for Me together with Archangel's Shadows and decided to read Shadow first because, ehm, I love Nalini Singh and had wait for GH novel for year. Sadly, after finish Shadow and start read Burn for Me, I have a work test and I must neglect it. Until last Friday, I continue my reading, read like a loco, then smile like ones when I close my copy.
I LOOOOVE BURN FOR ME! :D
I know why Ami hesitant to start this one, because some reasons that she had stated in her reviews and I'm agree with her. Heck, when reading the blurb, my mind scream "why it's remind me a lot of Guild Hunter?????!!!". If you follow both, you will get my meanig. The part when Nevada must contain Adam Pierce, make me remember when Elena must track Uram. And Mad Rogan? He sounds like Raphael. Add it with "billionaire" and "kidnapped", and my skepticsm running high. The cliches, oh, the cliches!! So glaring!
But, eh, did Kate Daniels and The Edge also have same premise? Did Curran, Declan, William also as rich as Rogan, even they're not mega ultra rich? Did Nevada will remind you to Kate and Rose combined? Aannnd...did I used to love Ilona Andrews's books so much?
And yes, they answer my doubt and deliver a paranormal romance that make me finally see some light for this genre. That PNR and UF IS NOT DEAD YET!!!!! :D
Filled with stellar world building, unique magic system, and sarcasm throw by our fair heroine, Nevada. Add it with an irresistible charm pulled by the enigmatic Rogan. And with what I mean, irresistible, Rogan is..wow. He remind me of Sherlock Holmes, the BBC version of course. Both are highly intelligent, ruthless, genius but lack of empathy. But, they have someone who will put them back to reality when they succumb to madness. The sexual tension between Nevada and Rogan is way top the chart! They don't have sex, or anything kinky, just kissing. But, kissing with Rogan nearly destroy Nevada in a good way. His telepath and telekinetic ability sure come in handy, and feed myy dirty imagination. Thank you, thank you very much for this, Ilona Andrews! :p. Billionaire is not my kind of hero, except for Roarke, and now I will add Rogan to that exception (funny that their name rhymes!).
But, what make Burn For Me work for me (heh!) is not just because Nevada, Rogan, or the world building. Nevada family is hilarious, but they love her anyway. So many funny one liners, dialogue and warm moments. This, imho, what is lack in UF or PNR (or another genre as well) nowadays. The family aspect seems like brushed off and the story just focused in the romantic relationship between h/H (or if there's any family, they will make their story tell in the next book. Typical). Ilona Andrews tend to balance the romance and family part, make both aspect support each other. Other characters like Adam Pierce (who seems interested to Nevada, afraid the story will feature love triangle, but apparantly not) and Augustine Montgomery (who have physical appearance like Benedict Cumberbatch. If the "sharp cheekbones" and "Sherlock Holmes" is not the clue) make me intrigued and wonder if they will get their own story.
I still think that the cover is cheesy. This book deserve better than the too smutty cover :/. The first part also a little bit slow, but when Nevada meet Rogan, things get interesting. Like usual, Ilona Andrews put some myth, even I wish they use another myth (wee, don't want to spoiler it anyway!). The magic system can be consufing at first, so I suggest you to visit their Hidden Legacy web. Many things explained and make sense. Just beware of the spoilers.
And..must wait for a year to read the next book? Talk about a torture.:/
Yes, I'am a hermit. Mostly I brood," Mad Rogan said. "Also I'm very good at wallowing in self-pity. I spend my days steeped in melancholy, looking out the window. Occasionally a single tear quietly rolls down my cheek.
Arabella and Lina snickered in unison.
"Do you also brush a white orchid againts your lips?" Arabella put in.
"While sad music plays in the background?" Lina grinned.
"Perhaps," Mad Rogan said.
"Do you have a girlfriend?" Grandma Frida asked.
I put my hand over my face.
"No," Mad Rogan said.
"A boyfriend?" Grandma Frida asked.
"No," Mom and I said in unison.
"But you don't even know what I wanted to ask!"
"No," we said again together.
"Party poopers," Grandma shrugged.

OK, I hope this is not April's Fools, because that cover is..err..is..I dunno, cheesy? For authors like Ilona Andrews and publisher like Avon, I mean :P

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.
Oh, I'm not sure with this "billionaire" thing :s. Also this sound heavily on romance. But, I still bought it anyway. Love Ilona Andrews's books! :D (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more

Maybe for some readers, this book feels like a filler book, but compared to another GH books that not featured Elena and Raphael, Archangel's Shadows is the best. A perfect combination of stellar world building, beautifully written prose, an engaging mystery and suspense, Archangel's Shadows is another Nalini's masterpiece that can't be missed.
And...I'm curious about Naasir! Forget every reader's favorite angel, Bluebell, it's time for the otherworldly intruiging tiger creature that is Naasir to steal the show ;).
Some of my old review before the book released: (view spoiler)[UPDATE!
It has cover and blurb! :D
Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.
In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot—should not—be walking the streets.
This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…
Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.
My thought about the cover is...love it!! I love that the publisher do not use Caucasian model, because using a woman who had fair white skin with blue eyes and blonde hair, will be VERY WRONG! Because we know that Ashwini has India's blood in hers ;). Make this cover so unique and exotic! As an Asian woman, I'm so happy and pleased. Let there will be more Asian heroines in the future!
Note : Poor Janvier just got a little space :). And I always picture him with a long hair. Make him look more rakish and kinda like pirate. Maybe because his Cajun blood.
November 2014, I'm ready!
Via Nalini's FB page :
Wow, lots of questions on my previous post about Guild Hunter #7. Here are some answers: The book will feature Ash and Janvier as main characters (from "Angels' Pawn"), but it will also feature Elena and Raphael (after the events in "Archangel's Legion", they have a lot to deal with!).
This is a tightly connected world and group of characters, so we're also going to see most of the usual suspects, including the hunters and many of the Seven (Naasir, too ;-)).
Okay, that's what I have for you so far. More info to come a bit closer to the release - which, by the way, is currently scheduled for the end of October. That's a tentative date, so it could move. More specific date to come later in the year.
I think I'm a minority here that want more Elena and Raphael :) (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>...more
(And I end up re-read the 1/4 last part book just because, duh, it's fuckin' awesome!!)
It's hard to part with your favorite series,5 AWESOME STARS!!!
(And I end up re-read the 1/4 last part book just because, duh, it's fuckin' awesome!!)
It's hard to part with your favorite series, and not just once, but twice. I have the same feeling when read , the last book of Demonica series and rejoice when knew that Larissa continue her story with Four Horsemen of Apocalypse arc. I love all her books, not one of them never let me down (well, Ares did. He's a JERK after all) and I always swallow her new book right after said book come in my lap.
REVENANT, like REAVER is a hell of a ride book. Larissa wrap-up the battle between Good vs Evil in the end with a good punch. Even the event that lead it can be so deus ex machina, especially after reader learn the real identity of Blaspheme and Revenant, I have no complaint. Everything is so fuckin perfect and, again make me sad when reading word "THE END".
I'm right when I think that Revenant is so much like Wraith but of course he's so different than the most favorite Seminus. Revenant is the fucked up version of Wraith but not over the top. His past is so painful and behind his devil-may-care attitude, he has a softer side and so strict with rules that somehow make him more attractive and cute in another way. Some of his scene make me melt like a puddle of goo and some make me want to hug him because he don't know where he belong to. My favorite part from him? When he rescue Thanatos's vampire from Gethel's torture rack:
"I went back to Gethel's and got the vampire." He lowered his voice to a mumble, even though there was no one around to hear him, and she swore the faintest blush spread over his cheeks. "And the kittens."
Blaspheme stared, and for a moment, she almost believed that she must be part of Soulshredder, because the big, dangerous Shadow Angel radiating death like a malevolent power plant had morphed into something else before her very eyes. Something more relatable. Something admirable. And yet, something no less dangerous
MELTING. Big. Time. I know your feeling Blaspheme, for I think at first Revenant will become alpha asshole biker type, and yet, like Azagoth, he can be as cuddle as teddy bear.
I also like Blaspheme. She's not kick ass like Tayla or Limos, or Harvester. She's a doctor, but she has a big heart and in the end that heart is what saved Revenant in the end. She's a fighter of her own, with ethic to saved people life not end it. Even the said people is evil. I like her determination and glad that she still true to her principal, because killing is not her nature. And, I'm so touched that Revenant, even he's lusting after Blas, he still praised her code, even support her when she's torn between killing for a greater cause or stay true to her doctor ethic, to save live.
Wow, I'm almost weep when read this book...because like I said before, I'm not ready to part with this series!! :'( I know that all good thing must come to an end, but Demonica series is a series that I don't mind to have 20 or 30 books because Larrisa Ione's writing is so addictive! Her take of angel and devil again remind me so much with manga Angel Sanctuary by Yuki Kaori. But, the romance and the steamy factor of Demonica better than Angel Sanctuary, hands down. Larissa Ione in a league of her own when writing a steamy and so-hot-I-want-to-fan-myself sex scenes ;)
The most cool character maybe Metatron, Rev and Reaver's uncle, the highest Archangel in Heaven. This archangel is cryptic and full of riddles, yet in the end he is the most compassionate angel I had read in Demonica, compare to the devious and always plotting angels in this world. Yep, like not all demon are evil, the angel also not all goody-goody person. Some are cunning, some are heartless. My complaint just why Larissa choose Raphael to be one of the villain, for I love him in Guild Hunter series! >.<
Some old character, like the Sems brother and the Horsemen, Reaver and Harvester have role here, especially Reaver because he's Revenant's twin. But what make me so happy is, my favorite Seminus demon ever, Eidolon have a big role! XD. I really love reading his scene and glad that he doesn't change at all.
A link in the end of the book bring me to the Epilogue scene in Larrisa's blog and make me sadder to part with Demonica world! Actually REVENANT is not the final book of Demonica series, even the event that happen in this book is final. The next is HADES, and I really can't wait to read it!!!
..."The Destroyer, she said. "His name is Revenant. He's a Shadow Angel. And he knows the truth about me."
"He what?" Deva's shout rattled the pictures and anatomical models hanging on the walls. "How? And why the fuck are you standing here like it"s no big deal when you should be hiding?"
"Because," Blas said, "I'm the one who told him. And... I'm kind of sleeping with him."
Her mother, the rock-solid pillar of strength, lost all the color in her face... and passed out....more
It's been almost 2 years since I read Assassin's Gambit and I like the premise that I didn't hesitant to bought Spy's Honor. The problem is, wh4 stars
It's been almost 2 years since I read Assassin's Gambit and I like the premise that I didn't hesitant to bought Spy's Honor. The problem is, when you read the first book a long long time ago, you will miss some detail. Spy's Honor is a prologue to Assassin's Gambit and I admit, I'm a little bit confused when read this one. Spy's Honor is about Rhianne, Imperial Princess of Kjall and Jan-Torres aka Janto, the Crown Prince of Mosari. Both are cameos in the first book but play important role. It's not necessary to read Assassin's Gambit first. In fact, I will read this one then Assassin's Gambit.
The story is back when Lucien, the hero of book 1 is not emperor yet. His tyrant father is invading Mosar, and Janto is desperate to find a way to claim his country back. As a spy he enter the palace and instead finding his lost spy, he meet Rhianne first. What begin as a languange lesson between Janto and Rhianne turn to something more. They begin to fall to each other, with Janto still hide his true identity. When fate cruelly separate them and Kjall succeded in invading Mosar, Janto must take his responsibility as the heir of the crown to claim what his. Even its mean he must betray Rhianne.
What I praise most from Spy's Honor is Raby's ability to mix fantasy, romance, intrigue and politic with ease. All mixed in perfect balance and produce a good read. Even I admit that some part can be so slow. The part when Rhianne and Janto exchange about languange might be boring to read, but on the other side it show that languange is one of important element of high fantasy. No map here, but I will set aside for it. No glossarium either, which if there's one it will be nice. The conflict is well written, even the romance part is not silly or too Harlequinesque. Of course there some drama in the end, especially when Rhianne know about Janto's true identity. But its handle well.
My problem maybe is Rhianne. Maybe because I think Vitala, the heroine from first book is so badass, Rhianne seems pale compared to her. Sure Rhianne is strong, being rebel and challenge his uncle, the current emperor to save her loved one, but in some part she strike me as naive. Sometimes too compassionate too, but what bothering me is her naivete. As for the hero, I like Janto a lot. He's a beta hero, not alpha, not act like "I'm Tarzan, hear me roaaar, but can be commanding when situation need him. Janto is a shroud mage, with ability to make himself and his target-if he desire- invicible. A cool ability (and yeah, it will show in what I think the steamiest sex scene in this book, ehm), add it with his familiar, the ferret named Sashi, make him an unforgettable hero.
If you want to read a fantasy romance full of intrigue, politic manuveur but crave your happy ending, Spy's Honor is a must read....more
