After I read the first trilogy of Irin Chronicles (The Scribe, The Singer and The Secret), didn't take me too long to read the next, The Staf 4 stars
After I read the first trilogy of Irin Chronicles (The Scribe, The Singer and The Secret), didn't take me too long to read the next, The Staff and the Blade. Despite the description that said its consist of 4 stand alone novella, The Staff and The Blade can't be read as a stand alone. Since the MCs, Damien and Sari are important characters, their story told in the first three book, and this book will explain their background story. From the first they met, how they become estranged couple and unite again under unpredictable circumstances, and how they cope with the final battle that happen in the end of The Secret.
DREAMS told how Damien and Sari met and become a mate. This novella is just your standard paranormal romance story. Boy feel weary after war and war, his soul tormented. Boy meet this peculiar girl, and he feel that his dark soul brighten under her light. Girl want the boy. They mate afterward. Pretty simple story, though. The scene when Damien and Sari mate and bond their souls for eternity is my favorite.
GHOSTS....is hard to read. Readers will know in the first trilogy about The Rending. How Damien failed his men and his family, by lost Sari's twin, Tala. How Tala's mate, Gabriel hate Damien so much. How Sari lost their child, and with the rest of Irina survivor decide to exile themselves, therefore make the Irin scribe suffer for centuries, not able to mate and also wallow in their failure. And how Damien and Sari become estranged. Unable to forgive each other and themselves. We know that its happen, we know that its unavoidable. That's why reading Ghosts is so painful.
MEMORIES happen in the same timeline with The Singer, when Damien bring Ava to Sari's haven in Oslo. The prologue is also hard to read, because it's deal with the aftermath of the Rending. How Damien and Sari become estranged for 200 years but still try to make contact and dream-walking, until Damien choose to walk away is amazed me. Memories is about forgiveness, about healing, about Damien and Sari try to make amend with their past. Not as hard and painful to read like Ghosts, but still the angst wrenched my heart. There was a saying, the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Hate means that person still care, even in a negative way. Indifference is hurt. Damien feel that he deserve Sari's wrath and rage, he prefer she to be angry to him, rather that silence. For married couple- especially me-, this novella will connect in so many way. The foundation of marriage (or mating bond, or union), is not just love. Not just sex. Not just commitment. But also communication. Read about Sari's silence and indifference toward Damien can be so frustating. But I like that Damien is a guy that didn't want to give up. Memories is my favorite novella in this book.
VISIONS is a little bit abrupt for my taste. Hunter write the effect of the final battle to both Sari and Damien, but especially Sari. How their fundamental way of Irin change in so many way, left not just them to feel unbalanced, but the rest of the Irin and Irina society. Visions is about what is waiting for Damien and Sari in the future and the conclusion of the story. While the story feel rushed and the end is abrupt, I can said that I feel satisfied with the ending. Both Damien and Sari need a little peace, and how Hunter write about child, a topic that still sensitive for both MCs is quite right.
Overall I enjoy this book. I like both Sari and Damien as characters, and I think that theirs are better character than Malachi and Ava. Beside second chances also my favorite trope. The Staff and the Blade is a must read, if you had read the first trilogy of Irin Chronicles and I can't wait to read the next book, The Silence, Leo and Kyra's story. ...more
After Dragos Goes to Washington and Pia Does Hollywood, now it's turn for their son, Liam to take the spotlight. Anyhow, the novella must read3 stars
After Dragos Goes to Washington and Pia Does Hollywood, now it's turn for their son, Liam to take the spotlight. Anyhow, the novella must read after Shadow's End, because the aftermath of the battle that took in Shadow's End affect Liam's life and his decisions.
This novella is short, more like novelette. They will be no sexual scene, because, grosss, this is Liam we talk about. Even he's look like a teenager and will reach adulthood because of his unusual growth spurt, a result from having mega uber alpha dragon and unique wyr as his parents, bottom line is... Liam is still one year old!! Gosh, it's hard to read and remind me over and over that Liam still a baby in term of human world. You think Renesmee from Twilight was weird. Well, Liam is more than WEIRD. A little bit awkward to read he already rebel against Dragos and Pia, drink coffee, drink wine (wth!) and have a little crush to...a girl that much much older than her *snort*.
Put aside all that craziness that is Liam...the novelette is still okay to read. Liam's struggle is apparent, since his father is Dragos, he didn't want to live under Dragos's shadow. He also still grieving from the event of Shadow's End. I just hope he doesn't mature too early *shrug*
Cuelebres family is adorable..and now Liam will have a lil' bro. Life is good for them....more
Zombies...zombies...zombies everywhere!! It's a night (or day?) of the living undead. Except..we don't talk about Nightkind demesne. More like zombieZombies...zombies...zombies everywhere!! It's a night (or day?) of the living undead. Except..we don't talk about Nightkind demesne. More like zombie Fae. Poor those Light Fae :(.
Get a glimpse to Tatiana's past. Poor her. Her evil twin, Isabeau is nasty! I'm glad that both Bailey and Melisande is still in good term, consider what happen to them in Midnight's Kiss. I wonder if Bailey show up in the Wicked, Sebastian Hale's novella. I read it years ago, so I'm not sure.
I think Isabeau will be the main antagonist for Harrison's Moonshadow series. One of her Hounds, Morgan the Fae already introduced in this novella. I wonder who he might be, since he can't be affected by Dragos's fire and everyone knows Dragos is older than dirt.
Can I hope that maybe Ferion will be with Bailey? Tatiana seems to brush off the new Elven lord. I wonder why.
Also, WHY WORST THING ALWAYS HAPPEN IN PIA'S STORY?? This chick is trouble magnet. First, Dragos got amnesiac in Pia Saves the Day, now Dragos got infectious. It like what Pia said at first is true..her travel indeed had cursed. But...actually the problem is not too dire like amnesiac Dragos. If you can say the probability of Dragos become zombie is not dire. But c'mon.
Love the scene with Stinkpot. I always wonder why Liam is so good natured while his Wyr form taken after Dragos. Seems like its come from Pia. Stinkpot is more like Dragos in power and temper. Can't wait for this little bundle to come off. Anyway..Pia and Dragos is..very fertile *snort*. I almost envy them.
Welp..always loved to read about Cuelebres family. They are indeed..adorable. And I also find Pia to be tolerable. Shocking, I know....more

Pardon my French...tapi perasaan abis baca Girls in the Dark ini mirip - mirip abis gue selese baca And Then There Were None. Jika Barat punya Agatha Christie..maka di Jepang ada Akiyoshi Rikako. Tentunya ini bias gue, karena gue ga banyak baca novel misteri, tapi SUMPAH novel ini ngeselin! In a good way tentunya. Twist yang ada di ending, sedikit bisa ketebak awalnya, tapi ternyata masih ada twist lagi? Luar biasa! Dan gue baru nyadar itu pas gue chat sama Alvina (aka Ipin, panggilan kesayangan), dimana gue nanya:
Ren (disingkat R): Itu akhirnya jadi xxx ga xxx xxx (maklum berusaha ga spoiler :P) Alvina (disingkat A): Bentar Ren, agak lupa ceritanya (maklum sudah lama bacanya) R: Ya, xxx endingnya begini. A: Itu yang endingnya begitu kan, yang mereka... R: (pake emot orang kaget) R: Lah masa sih? Bagian mananya Ipiiin? Apa kelewatan yak? Jangan - jangan... A: (emot ngakak) R: Asem! Jadi baca lagi kan. Kirain kiasan doang
The conclusion for Ava and Malachi story and the end of the first arc of Irin Chronicles (I hope so). The Secret answer some questions from Th4 stars
The conclusion for Ava and Malachi story and the end of the first arc of Irin Chronicles (I hope so). The Secret answer some questions from The Scribe and The Singer, like who is Ava exactly. The revelation kinda shocking, but I praised Hunter again for her unique take from overused theme, like nephilim, band of warriors, angel theme, etc etc. In this book, the characters not pure black and white, there's always shade of grey. The bad honchos of course is bad, but not all Irin enemies, The Grigori, are bad. Hunter show that even the enemy have their own reason to attack the Irin and how the Irin and Irina were wrong about the Grigori.
The Secret is more complex and compelling compared to the previous. The Scribe introduce reader to the Irin society and introduction to Ava and Malachi relationship. The Singer reveal the Irina society, and how Ava and Malachi try to rekindle their broken connection. The Secret come to full circle, with Ava and Malachi strengthen their bond and the Irin and Irina become one once more. Also, reader will finally understand why one of the antagonist, the fallen angel Jaron always protect Ava, despite that he is a fallen. It's quite sad, tbh. The truth behind Ava's past is also sad, which include her father and grandmother. But glad that in the end, some peace come to them.
I like how Hunter handle the ending. Not too rushed, not too sweet either. For some, the final battle between Irin-Irina and The Grigori might not epic, but in the otherside its result are devastating. Hunter did a good job to explain the result, how its impact Malachi and Ava in some ways. Anyway that's not mean that the story end. Some loose tie is still...loose.
I will always recommend Elizabeth Hunter work. I love her Elemental Mysteries series, and in The Irin Chronicles she once again prove that she is one of premium PNR/UF author out there. I wonder if she got picked by traditional publisher, her name will hear often. But, even just indie, she already being fabulous as she is. I can't wait to read what next in Irin world....more
First book that I manage to finish this year (yay, me!). Welp, I sound desperate :P.
Not much too review, tho. I read The SinMore like 3,5 stars, tbh
First book that I manage to finish this year (yay, me!). Welp, I sound desperate :P.
Not much too review, tho. I read The Singer ASAP after reading The Scribe because the cliffie ending, but since I'm so busy, took me more than 2 weeks to finish. Mostly I just too lazy to read XD. But in the other side, I also don't want to read another title before I finish this one.
I did agree with some reviewer that Malachi and Ava's relationship kinda become dull, bland and repetitive. I don't mind sweet and loving scene, but too much make it boring. Agree too that Ava kinda didn't deserve Mal at the end. This girl have too much low esteem issue and trust issue. I also feel that Ms Hunter prolong the meeting between Mal and Ava just for drama sake.
So many secret! So many questions go unanswered and I think all will be revealed in the next book, The Secret. Don't worry, I already read The Secret right now, and I hope it doesn't take a very long time to finish it, lol!
At least....I finish reading 1 book today, yay! :D...more
