While the suspense and world building is the plus, the romance just feel so -so. Sadly I can't feel chemistry between Ana and Connor. Their more like "I'm Tarzan, you Jane. When I don't want to talk why I left you fifty years ago, just accept it.".
Yeah, how romantic. Opps, just let my sarcasm out ;p.
Not bad for the first book in series. But its just feel okay for me. If you want something new in paranormal romance, I'm afraid Alpha's Instinct is just same old, same old....more

Oh, wow, wow, WOW! I pacing back and forth to give this 4, 4 1/2 or 5 stars. But, because I really enjoy it 'till the end, I decide to give Lord and Lady Spy a lovely 5 stars! =)
Lord and Lady Spy is story about 2 retired agent who don't want retire at all! Agent Saint and Agent Wolf, both are capable agents of Barbican Group (maybe its like English Secret Service?). Then, they must accept the fact when their leader told them to retire and back to their old life. The war with Napoleon is over, what they can do? But little they know, that in fact they know each other!
Well, agent Wolf is Adrian Galloway, Lord Smythe (ha ha ha :P) and agent Saint is his wife, Sophia Galloway, Lady Smythe. Imagine their surprise when they know their real identity, when both agent receive a private mission from English Prime Minister. Adrian who always go out for all time, and had been shut out from his wife bedroom, never guess this fiery and witty woman as called Saint, is his -nerd, not appalling, always using glasses- wife. Nor with Sophia who adored Agent Wolf, that in reality, is her irritated and always on the go husband. But, this mission need both of them to investigated the prime minister's brother murder. And if they succeed, the Prime Minister promise to make one agent to work again for Barbican Group.
Just one, and who will have that position? While Sophia and Adrian work together for this case, they found that their spouse are not what they think to be. All that bitterness, sadness, feeling stranger for each other, distrust, slowly disappear with their effort to again recover their marriage. But,when the passion rose, they must remember, just one agent who will win the position on Barbican Group.
Let's the best spy win!
Lord and Lady Spy is my first book by Shana Galen. I admit, when it comes to historical romance, I always picky. I hate some aspect in HR which involved infidelity, abuse and forced seduction, that's why I choose any HR title carefully. Shana Galen is a new author for me, and when I see her newest release, Lord and Lady Spy, I'm intrigue. Lord and Lady Spy have a beautiful cover with a vibrant pink color. But, the premise of this book which draw me to read it, and I'm glad to find this one are amazing.
This book indeed have "Mr and Mrs Smith" vibe. From their noble title, Smythe (which in one scene in this book, an American woman, pronounce it Smith), they don't have a clue for each other real identity, (and they're so surprised when knowing their butler know their life as spy too!),the action and the suspense too. But, actually this book is about second chance. Adrian and Sophia's marriage had been train wreck. They're not love each other, nor they want to be separated. Sophia's miscarriage make her so sad, she desperately want her own child, even she failed for 3 times. What make she sadder, is the fact when she miscarriage, Adrian not there to support her. That's why its hard for Sophia to trust and love him, beside she still remember her brother horrible past, where he was betrayed by the woman he loved, and that woman is double agent. Adrian, who realized their mistake, will try so hard to win her, to make their marriage whole again.
The action is good, its fast paced, and this book have so many sexual tension scenes. One scene I will never forget when they have foreplay in the middle of the noon, near the window. How scandalized! (and their sex scene in the carriage is one of my favorite too ;))) But, what I love more are the interaction between Adrian and Sophia. Their method of work so different! Sophia who always follow her instinct, believe her intuition, and have a way to make people talk to her, against Adrian, who is practical, make a lot of planning, impatient, brute but have his own strength, which come in handy when the situation getting out of control. Its delightful to see them. From distrust to trust, from rival to partnership, from stranger to lover =)
For historical romance lovers who love action, romance, suspense which are package in one pack, I recommend to you to read Lord and Lady Spy! And I will happy if Ms Galen will write more about Adrian and Sophia in the future. =)...more
I almost afraid I will forget the world building, basic story and some characters in The Edge series, since I read almost 2 years ago. Glad Ilona AnI almost afraid I will forget the world building, basic story and some characters in The Edge series, since I read almost 2 years ago. Glad Ilona Andrews can make me understand again without too much info dumping. The world premise is still the same. There's two side of the world, The Broken aka real world and The Weird, world full of magic and ruled by bluebloods. And there's The Edge, the world in between. Ilona Andrews adding The Mire now, a swamp place between Louisiana and Adrianglia (country in The Weird)where Louisiana exile their fugitive and criminals.
The main characters in Bayou Moon is William The Wolf or Lord William Sandine. He's Declan old friend from On the Edge and a wolf changeling. After 2 years live in The Broken, William was assigned by The Mirror, undercover organization from The Weird. He must track Spider, his arch-enemy and the leader of The Hand that full of freaks. In his journey through the Mire, he met Cerise Mar whose he first address as "hobo queen". Cerise is the leader of Mar family now after her parents abducted by The Hand and William go with her with hope he can reach Spider. Turn that Spider also hunted Cerise. Cerise herself have so much problem in her shoulder. There's feud between Mars and Sherilees, and she believe Sherilee family somewhat reponsible for her parents abduction. Torn between family war and to save her parents, Cerise must rely to William and the Mars to face it all.
Bayou Moon is like its predecessor, hard to categorize if its fit into paranormal romance or urban fantasy because actually its FIT to BOTH genres. I will stuck with romance urban fantasy. The world building is rich, but Ilona Andrews doesn't shy away to write it with full of grotesque and horror detail, especially the swamp environment. They (since Ilona Andrews is 2 people) also don't hesitate to kill or hurt their characters! Few authors can do that and mostly don't have heart to let the characters died but Ilona Andrews do it to show how real The Edge world can be. They also portrayed poverty and hard life from Mar family.
As for the character, I love Cerise. She is like a typical heroine who think all problem is in their shoulder, they don't have any people who can rely on then whining and bitchin about it. Cerise is STRONG, not try to be strong. She sure kinda whining about her condition but she doesn't give up and that's why I admire from her. William itself is sometimes can be funny and wolfish but his loneliness is understable and we will get glimpse into his unstability. Make him more like a real hero and man. Mar family is my favorite family! They are crazy, they delivered some dark humor within them but they also support each other. My favorite Mar is Kaldar, lawyer and thief extraordinairre, and Richard, his older brother. Good thing they have their own book. The romance between William and Cerise not top off the chart but I still love read it. I like when its no need a long time for Cerise to say love. The ending kinda cliche and silly but I find it is so cute!
Bayou Moon is a thick book but its never make me bored. Ilona Andrews writing will mesmerized you and make you can't stop reading from the start (even in my case, I read it for 5 days because I'm so busy this week!). I might be different, because I love The Edge more than Kate Daniels! I wish Ilona Andrews will write more Edge book, alas they just write until Richard's book in . The next is Kaldar in . Can't wait to read his story and I believe he will throw many sarcasm ;)....more
