D-4 stars As a former fat kid, I can appreciate every word of this truthful and informative memoir/weight loss guide. There is great advice about how to set smart goals, how to stick with it, how to retrain your diet and your thinking and your habits.
As hard as it is to be an overweight teen, it's even harder to enter adulthood carrying the same weight. This book offers tools to help teens understand how to lose weight for all the right reasons, and how to do it in a healthy, responsible, and long-term way.
With such a large portion of the United States population of children struggling with obesity and weight issues, this book meets a larger (pun intended) need than ever before. (less)

D-4.8 stars Wow. Pretty much every great male author in young adult and children's literature writing directly to boys, about what it's like to be a boy. I'm not a boy and I loved it. Some of the short stories are about these authors' personal experiences as boys or young men. They are real and touching and funny. I'm talking funny. Like stories about crushing on the high-school math teacher, being horrible at sports, getting called a girl. Mostly stories about humiliation, but they're honest and REAL (mostly).
If you are a boy, you need to check out this book. If you don't really love reading, you need to check out this book. If you breathe air, you need to check out this book. (less)

I'd probably give this more stars if I was still a teen, or angsty, or into prose.
It's not my favorite poetry, but it's written by teens, dealing with issues of teens (some painful, some trite). I can imagine the ocassional, and almost certainly girl (as all the poetry is written by teen girls), teen will identify or connect with some of the poetry in this compilation, but it will likely be a very specific group.(less)

I thought I'd just flip through this book, and ended up loving it so much I read it cover to cover in one night. History class bored me to tears, but I couldn't get enough of the way this book represents these historically famous people and their deaths. I wanted more.
The format is accessible and the paragraphs are broken by fun facts like: "If mummy eyeballs are rehydrated, they return to almost normal size." (Did you know that? I didn't know that!) Each chapter is dedicated to one individual, like Edgar Allen Poe, and Christopher Columbus. (Sounds boring right?--So wrong...)
The description of the preparation of King Tut's body for burial is epic. (Although I wouldn't suggest reading this book before bed!!!).
Bragg makes history FUN and so interesting I was left with a desire to read more about each of these people. Not even one or two. ALL of them seemed fascinating.

This book lives up to it's title of gruesome, but the weak-stomached shouldn't shy away. It's an absolutely fascinating look at how the brain works based on the true account of a man who had a metal rod shot, that's right, shot through his skull--the best part? He lived! Interspersed are funny comments that make the disgusting parts much more bearable, and the sheer interesting/amazing-factor is enough to dull what would otherwise seem a little too morbid for comfort. Phineas is still completely functioning and unchanged, with the exception of his disposition, making for an extremely interesting portal into what makes us human and how our brains are complex and perfect.
