A prestigious literature conference is convening in Cambridge and Dulcie Schwartz is the university liaison for the event, meeting and greeting some of the finest minds in her field.
But events do not run according to plan when one scholar's presentation is sabotaged while another visiting professor disappears. As Dulcie and her boyfriend Chris struggle to solve problems and soothe egos, a strange apparition starts to haunt the bi-annual event. And even Mr Gray, the ghost of Dulcie's late, great cat,,appears to be overwhelmed, leaving Dulcie to manage an increasingly backstabbing crew of professional rivals, one of whom may be a killer.
Dulcie’s life feels like it’s spinning out of control. She is going to be presenting a paper at the conference taking place at her university so of course the department chair has decided that she also has to be in charge of taking care of everything else also. Meeting the visiting scholars, making sure they have what they need while still trying to have a life of her own is in a word daunting. Things start going sideways when one of the scholars asks for help retrieving the file that supposedly contained her notes for her presentation, and claiming that someone has sabotaged her computer. Finding out that everyone in the visiting group has a past that crossed lines over the years (and also having affairs with each other) is making it difficult for her to keep them in line. Add in some possible poisonings, a dead body, and once again being seen as a person of interest by the police is making Dulcie wonder why she ever let her boss push her into being liaison to the visiting trouble makers. Clea Simon, in each succeeding book in this series is proving that she is up there with the greats. Her stories bring to mind authors like Dame Agatha Christie, John Sandford and J.J. Marric. Her ability to juggle so many people and multiple crossing plots make her books a genuine pleasure to read, collect and share with friends.

Welcome to the Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop--where life is sweet, revenge is sweeter, and murder is here to stay…
You Can't Fudge an Alibi
Allie McMurphy is up to her neck in renovations at the grand old hotel that's been in her family for generations. With its quaint Victorian charm--and world-famous fudge shop--the place is one of Mackinac Island's most beloved landmarks.
Sure, every family has a skeleton or two in the closet. But Allie didn't expect to find an actual corpse inside hers, especially one Joe Jessup, who had a long-running feud with her dear departed grandfather. Which makes Allie the number-one suspect.
Can she sniff out the culprit before another victim checks in?
Allie’s dream was to run the Historic McMurphy Hotel and Fudge Shop. But her dream included her grandfather being there alive and well to show her the ropes before handing it over to her. Finding a dead body in her second floor supply closet was definitely part of her refurbishing plan either. So poor Allie is now caught up in not only her renovations but a feud that has the islanders’ split between supporting her or supporting the family of the dead man. This is a fantastic first book in a series that I think is going to grab everyone's attention. I love the book and I think the island setting and the cast of quirky characters and neighbors will make it a fun read. The recipes are of course a bonus that I think most people will also enjoy. Historic Route 66: With its signs for "New Dead Things," the Biker Bunny Bin, and the Kontiki Pizza and Chinese Restaurant that serves only waffles - it's kitchy, crazy, and fun. How appropriate that it would hold a place of importance to unconventional Tracy Eaton and her dad, aging Hollywood hunk, Alec Grainger. Their Route 66 adventures always included a stay in Tecos, New Mexico, but their regular stop at Lucy Crier's Lunch Pail Cafe is now a thing of the past, since Lucy plugged her ex-beau and went to the big house for murder. That's why it's perplexing when Lucy, safely ensconced in her cell, is simultaneously seen dodging traffic along Route 66. Naturally, Alec uses that mystery to lure Tracy and her sweetie Drew back to America's Main Street. But the road takes a darker turn when Woody Crier, Lucy's smarmy son, turns up dead, and an even stranger bend when the FBI goes gunning for Tracy, calling her one of America's Most Wanted. She has no choice but to go on the lam, but this time, the Mother Road provides no escape. As the danger escalates, Tracy knows if she can't cut through the web of secrets and lies shrouding her favorite haunts and the pasts of those dearest to her, everything she cherishes could vanish in a Route 66 minute.
This story is being told in both the past (through flashbacks by Tracy and others) and the present. Drew’s movie star father cons her into joining him on a trip down memory lane on the Mother Road, Route 66. This road is famous in both song (Get Your Kicks on Rte. 66) and television history (Route 66). Tracy, her husband Drew, her father, and “Uncle” Philly are doing their best to solve murders, and find answers to a decade old murder. The situations can be silly, masterful, or downright crazy. But they all do what they can to survive. In the end everyone’s secrets will come to light (hopefully) and Tracy and Drew will be able to enjoy some time together without worrying about being chased by cops, robbers, and thieves. I’ve enjoyed all the Tracy Eaton books I can get my hands on. This latest one had me glued to my chair for hours at a time (potty breaks are definitely needed) and I was sorry when the book ended.

The year is 2023 and ex-detective Lara Evans is working as a freelance paramedic in a bleak new world. She responds to an emergency call and is nearly killed when a shooter flees the home. Inside she finds the federal employment commissioner wounded, but she’s able to save his life. The next day Lara leaves for the Gauntlet—a national competition of intense physical and mental challenges with high stakes for her home state. She spots the assailant lurking at the arena and soon after, she lands in deep trouble. Who is the mysterious killer and what is motivating him? Can Lara stop him, stay alive, and win the Gauntlet?
Lara Evans has had a really bad couple of years. She’s getting it together as a freelance paramedic and is a contestant in the Gauntlet. In this reality the country is in deeper shit then even we see in the daily papers or on the news. By hopefully winning this contest, she will bring big money to her state and hometown, along with new jobs that will mean police and firemen can be put back to work.
This story is shown through the eyes of two main characters who are introduced to us right from the start. Paul Madden is an IT specialist working for the government and is given a new project to work on that will take up all his work time. His normal routines will be covered by a co-worker. At this point I wondered what these two people, in differing parts of the country, with two different jobs had in common, and therein sits the basis for this mystery based in a near and almost very real seeming America.
I’m not going to hand out any spoilers. The book blurb tells you a lot more then you need to know, and should entice you into buying, borrowing, or stealing this book for your reading enjoyment.
L. J. Sellers is the author of the Detective Jackson series, and two other freestanding stories. I look forward to reading her next books, and will also be looking for the ones that are already on the shelves.
