As the Doctor would say: "humans, so precious."(less)

Because indeed the adaptations of this magnificent piece of writing are numerous and well known, but I had not given myself the chance and the pleasure of actually reading Dicken's book.
I won't say it is a must read, for I believe we come across this story very, very often. But... it is a must read. I has to be said. Quite short, to the point and, yet, delicious.(less)

How could Doyle create such and homage to logical thinking and, still, believe in spirits and such fantasies? Fact is, there are a few pieces not really well laid, at least for one outside Sherlock's/Doyle's logic.
But it is quite a beginning. And, again, quite a homage. (less)

I do say so because I've got the feeling that things are always going back to the same point, because situations are being revisited and this does not interest me that much.
Or maybe I'm just growing sillier and duller.(less)

I would wonder why is it I've read so many novels if not for Neil Gaimans commentaries on what should be a writer's wannabe interests. Does it seem boring? At first glance, might be. at second glance? Ditto. And still worth reading; read, and let the chips fall where they may.(less)

Actually, there is one approach I did not really find suitable: the one given to string theory, as if science requires no conditions to refute any theory. It's just a matter of researching and researching and researching, not daring to worry about how scientific is your subject.(less)

I heard about a few years back, read Savage Season per chance and longed for more from this author, but never bothering to actually look. Should have done so.
This book is quite a blast and makes one wonder. As I said, it is fast paced, full of smart remarks and, despite the sex and fights and jokes and stuff, the content still gets to be philosophical on its own Lansdale way - I'd even dare say american-movie way.

At times I just felt like this book was dull and not worth reading. At the same time, I felt displaced and, well, this is exactly the kind of feeling I look for in a novel or science fiction.

Having read one other of Dick's novels (The Man in the High Castle) I cannot say I like the esoteric ideas he brings forth; on the other hand, there's so much us being alive and deciding what to do, in such a out of space-time way, that I cannot help but read on. And on. And on. Being a science fiction fan, this author is a "must know" kind of guy.(less)

That's not to say that Poe isn't a good author, irrelevant, etc., not at all. My assessment is just the opposite, since many of the elements that can be found within the stories collected in this book still tap into our imagination; I would say it just so happens because Poe has laid ground for much that we see all around modern pop culture. I wonder – and that is an exercise I might someday try – what would happen if Poe was read by youngsters, in a rainy, dark night.
T'was a great anniversary gift, that's for sure.
Now, not to be fully enthusiastic: sometimes it can be a bit tiresome, his explorations of phobias; I mean, he could have chosen different topics within the realm of fears. (less)
