But I found the main female character to be ridiculous. She just didn't make any sense. I couldn't buy her as a believable character. She's a sex therapist who has had sex one time in her life and it was a bad experience that she still hasn't gotten over? There were some good moments, and I did enjoy the Greek theme. I'll probably read more in this series, but the book wasn't everything I hoped it would be....more

First of all, although it says Vampire Club Book #1 on the cover, it is actually like #8 in a larger Prime's series. I felt very lost trying to just pick it up and read it. That wasn't the only problem, though. The characters felt very flat. There was very little inner thoughts, and the book seemed to be written in the X happened, Y happened, Z happened format. Just didn't work for me, which is a pity because I greatly liked one of Sizemore's short stories....more

The concept of the book sounded so interesting that I just couldn't wait to start it. Unfortunately, the book blurb was pretty much the only part of the book that was good. This book starts off extremely slow. It does not have much of a hook to draw you in at all. I trudged on because this book was supposed to get very interesting, right? Wrong. It stayed very slow through a significant part of the book. In addition to this, this book is horribly written. It's written in the present tense, a new trend with young adult novels. Unfortunately, when writers try to follow this trend and do it poorly, it makes the book extremely difficult to read. That's the case with this book. The wrong tense is frequently used and awkward constructions are frequent. It was so bad I found myself repeatedly stopping and examining a sentence over and over again to try to figure out what the author might have intended for the sentence to mean. It really pulled me out of the book. The narration in general was not good. I felt distant from the characters and plot. I read this book on an airplane, and it is only because I was trapped with nothing else to do that I was even able to make myself finish this book, and even then with nothing else to do, I found myself sitting it aside and looking out into the blackness wishing the book would just go away. It was a great idea, so it gets a star for that, but the book really isn't very good....more

Sookie gets mad at the guy in her life for no good reasons and isn't very understanding. Plot details don't fit together well and there are discrepancies, but it still has the things I liked in all the other books. I love the universe and I enjoy reading for the overarching plot even if I do get mad at Sookie all the time. I've never really cheered for Sookie to be with one guy over another but am just along for the ride. With that in mind, I enjoyed this book all the way through and could not put it down. Although not my absolute favorite in the series, I liked it much better than "Dead in the Family" or even "Dead Reckoning". The plot was interesting to me, and I always feel happy reading anything in the Sookie universe. The only thing that annoyed me with the book is that the author kept recapping things that had happened in previous books--we remember, we read the books, we don't need you to tell us again. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read....more

It features a strong girl with supernatural powers, a mystery to solve, and a great love triangle.
I absolutely adored Clarity, and this book reminded me how much I love this world. That being said, I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as the first one. I couldn't put it down and did read it in one day, but the mystery in this one was just tooooo easy to figure out. I did not care for the new character introduced in this book, new friend Mallory. Mallory made me feel very uncomfortable for a good section of the book. Clare annoyed me at times when she did not before.
BUT the love triangle in this book is really well done. Both guys are totally likable, so, for once, you can actually understand why the girl is torn between them. Kim Harrington does a great job describing the boys and showing their emotions and the effects of the love triangle on them without making the boys seem weak. I was really pleased with that aspect of this book. In the end, I was happy with Clare's choice and realized how very much I was wanting that outcome, but the ending felt rushed to me. I would have liked to have seen more of the chosen boy's happiness and Clare telling her decision to the boy she did not choose to better wrap-up the story. Hopefully the author will decide to write a third book where we can see a bit more resolution to these things....more

Balthazar is angsty vampire of the sBalthazar is by far my favorite character of the Evernight series, so I was so happy to see him get his own book. Balthazar is angsty vampire of the series with a tortured past. His backstory hits just about every hurt/comfort and angst button there is. If you like the broody, guilt-ridden, quiet and angsty type of vampire, then you'll love Balthazar.
So how is the book? It was great for me and a lot of fun to be reminded over and over again just how hurt and angsty Balthazar is. Getting half the book from his perspective was a major, major plus for me. I enjoyed learning how he thinks. This book also has several (four, I think) mini-flashbacks to the past to the story of how he came to Evernight, and there are also a lot of flashbacks as part of the storyline. I really enjoyed the flashbacks and was happy to read every single one of them, but it also felt like they didn't add that much that we didn't already know. I would have liked to have seen some newer angst stories that we didn't already know or couldn't have guessed. But all in all, I felt this book did give great insight into Balthazar, and I really enjoyed reading all about the pains in his past.
His love interest in this book is Skye, who was in Afterlife. My initial reaction was no, no, no. She seems like such a Mary Sue, and even as you read the first chapter of this book she still seems that way. However, as the story went on, I did find myself liking her more. She grew on me. So if you're worried about that, I say read at least the firs three chapters and give her a chance.
One important thing I think people should know about this book is that it really isn't a standalone book. It's supposed to be, but it's not. It relies heavily on knowledge from all four Evernight books. So much so that I found myself wishing I'd reread them all before reading this book, even though I read them within the last couple of years. Also, the ending does not feel finished. Things are not resolved like they should be if this is truly the end. I expect a sequel even though the author has said she has no specific plans for one. The book really needs it, and I would enjoy it. So don't go into the book expecting everything to be completely tidied up by the end.
All in all, I still really liked this book. Balthazar is such a great character that I think it would be impossible for me to give any book about him five stars. There are things I think that could have been improved upon, but it's still a great read that I highly recommend to paranormal romance fans, Twilight fans, and angst fans....more
I really wanted to like this story, but just couldn't. The characters are likable for the most part. I liked Ewan and even the kid. The historical setI really wanted to like this story, but just couldn't. The characters are likable for the most part. I liked Ewan and even the kid. The historical setting was interesting. That's about all this book has going for it, though. The author's wording and phrasing were just so odd that it drew me out of the story. I don't mean minor grammar errors that an editor missed. I mean that her sentence structure is just so very odd that I found myself staring at it and forgetting altogether that I was supposed to be absorbed into a story. It kept me on the outside of the story and made me analyze the writing and the book instead of feeling like I was a part of the story. The other main problem this book suffers from is that it was boring. The romantic plotline is resolved 1/3 of the way through the book. I found it very difficult to finish after that. There was no tension or romantic conflict. I also have to mention the horrible cover. The photo doesn't match the description of the characters AT ALL. This is, of course, not the author's fault, but I found it annoying. All in all, the book did draw me in and make me curious about the other brothers' stories, but if they get boring as quickly as this one did, I don't know if I care enough to force myself to read the rest in the series....more

It's one of my absolute favorite series of all time. This book exceeded my expectations for a series that is already my favorite.
Toni is strong and kick-ass and everything you want a heroine to be. Ian is absolutely adorable and make you go "aww" all the time. The book is sexy and fun. Both characters seem like good, caring people, and again we get to see some of the characters from the other books. Even the side characters in this book are interesting. I loved the plot, the characters, the series. Everything! I think what makes this book so great is that Sparks has found the perfect balance of plot, romance, sexiness, and fun. Also, her males have just the perfect level of angst without seeming whiny and this particular female is a strong, cool person I'd actually like to be friends with. It's hard to find books like that! I highly recommend to anyone who likes paranormal romance....more

Kerrelyn Sparks writes just perfectly! I love the mix of paranormal, romance, erotica, suspense, action, and humor. It's impossible not to smile as you read this series. That being said, this is not my favorite couple in the series. Jean-Luc did grow on me as I learned more of his backstory, but I got sick of hearing about Heather's being 'fat' when she wasn't and I generally dislike romance stories with children or with a backstory of divorce. I still enjoyed this book, though. One thing the author does really right in this series is continue to show you your old favorite couples and also she keeps the story going across the books. I look forward to reading the next book in the series....more

I enjoyed the first two, but this one seemed perfect to me. I love Angus; I love all the Scottish vampires. Emma was strong and confident and exactly what I want in a heroine. You know what else I loved? Getting to see the characters from the previous books actually interact with the new characters! I hate how in some books (like the Carpathian series) the previous characters never make it back on screen. It's a little eerily scary how similar Angus and some of the Scots are to some of my own original characters I wrote well before ever hearing of these books. Usually when I read my favorite paranormal vamp books, it just makes me want to write my own books someday because I know I can do so much better. That was not the case with this book. This one makes me think that I don't know if I could do vampires any better than this. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to my friends. If you like paranormal romance, this one is a must read....more
