I tMan I had a love hate relationship with this book. I kept going back and forth. I would start to love it and then I would turn around and hate it. I think I put on goodreads my initial thoughts like this: So this is a complicated review... that will need some thoughts. Liked the plot Hated the main character Loved Kale Hated James Loved hated this story...
And sadly this is still how I am when I think about this book which is sad b/c I am not really still thinking about this book. The plot itself had so much promise. A place in the future where people are kept on display for people to look at. The main character however, was such a whiny, selfish, flat, not likable at all character. I actually kept rooting for something bad to actually happen to her that would knock her down a peg or two and that usually isn't how I roll. Add to it her insta-love attraction to a cowboy named James in the enclosure across the way to her (and we know how much I hate the insta-love plot device for no other reason than MAN he's HAWT and oh I'm a virgin so I wouldn't know what to do with him anyway I just know that he's my soul mate cause he fine) freaking a shoot me now. Then throw in Kale who I actually liked he was a good guy who proved way too many times he was better than the main character would ever deserve yet we all knew that by the time she figured that out it would be a too little too late yet she would get him in the end kind of thing. Hated the cowboy James who however, fit his time frame so I can't even blame him. And then there's Victoria who was like 13 that Emma was so mean to just b/c she happened to be the one that was picked by the zoo keepers to be the cowboy's mate. Dude not her fault get over yourself. See, see what I mean this book made me act like a teenager I was like SLOW YOUR FREAKING ROLL and GROW THE HELL UP then I was like okay I'm done skim, skim, oh that's interesting, skim, skim, oh cool, skim, skim, oh good we're done. Needless to say I think you get the point this book had great potential sadly for me it just fell flat and din't work.
Favorite part or line from story: Even thought parts of this story got on my nerves I enjoyed when Emma and James wrote on the wall in mud. I thought that was very sweet and enduring. ...more
THOUGHTS/OPINION: I enjoyed this book but not as much as the first one. Such, I think, is the curse of the second book. This focused more on the makingTHOUGHTS/OPINION: I enjoyed this book but not as much as the first one. Such, I think, is the curse of the second book. This focused more on the making of a monster vs an actual monster. While the first book was all about a real live monster that could or did exist. I found at times I raced through this which means I skimmed places not unusual for me. It was a nice story with an interesting twist and a good moral tale to it. I enjoyed the folk lore that built up and to be quite honest I do like the constant is a vampire real or not debate that is on going throughout and how you could as a reader take either side. The book allows you the reader to participate and decide for yourself which way you will land on the issue. That being said I felt as if the story was almost too long for me and could've been cut shorter at times. I will go head though and pick the next one in the series up just because I do like the style of writing so I can't help but want to read more by this author and series.
THINGS I LIKED 1. The relationship between Will Henry and Warthrop 2. Learning more about monstrumologist and what they do as well as why they do not exist any more. 3. The style of writing as if this is a diary and Mr. Yancey is trying to find out if anyone knows a Will Henry 4. Learning that Dr. Warthrop had a woman in his life that he loved and in returned loved him and their backstroy which was interesting
THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE (SPOILERS)
1. I didn't that his ex-fiance died not going to lie. I understand the reasoning behind it however, I am not happy it happened. 2. I do not at most times enjoy how Dr. Warthrop treats Will Henry 3. I did not like the little girl Lily and did not understand why she had to be involved at all with this story line.
Favorite part or line from story: The favorite parts of the story for me are when the doctor actually shows he cares for Will Henry like keeping him warm, or taking care of him when he is ill from the poison. ...more
I don't know why this book didn't work for me, but it didn't. I may have had too high of expectations after reading The Fault In Our Stars? Or Maybe bI don't know why this book didn't work for me, but it didn't. I may have had too high of expectations after reading The Fault In Our Stars? Or Maybe b/c this book tried too hard? I am not even sure what it was about this book that I just felt like I was being forced to plow through in hopes of it getting better.
