Kept thinking that I wish that this was how Game of Thrones was written (I actually would have enjoyed that then), and how I wish Eragon had been written (instead of being the trite, overuse, droll bullshit that it is). But then I sat and through about why I thought that. And I couldn't put my finger on it. Kay writes very well, if not extremely well. I definitely enjoyed his exposition and the complexities of the plot.
But the book didn't capture my heart and hold it. It was a great book, but I never fell in love with it.
I really enjoyed the characters and the character development, and Kay did write in a few perspectives that I would have otherwise not considered (especially referring having a lost homeland and how important it is to have that identity).
Thus, it gets 4.5 stars. I'll read another one of his works, and see how I like that compared to Tigana. (less)

We had a few known characters return; but I think I liked most the new characters in far away lands. Especially the apple-tree-turned-man due to Numair which then tied in to women's rights in a very Middle East-like society.
Visiting Aly and Nawat again was also fun. I think I liked them more when it was focused on spying and intrigue.
But, overall, my absolute, hands-down favorite was the one with Skysong getting her voice. It had always irked me that she couldn't talk. And then a story from her perspective frustrated me even more. I'm so glad that Tamora Pierce made up a good tale just for this!
All in all, Some great tales here! I would have loved something from a different time-lapse perhaps as well, though. Keladry or Beka would have added something nice. Maybe in the future!(less)

Anyway, Beka is all grown up by now, and on the hunt for a stolen prince of the realm. Most of her loyal friends from previous books have stepped up in this volume once more. As always, wonderful writing and a great tale from Pierce!(less)

Little things like the movement of jumping onto a dragons neck were cut (or never given) as details, which did leave me a bit disjointed and having to reread paragraphs.
Other than that, the story flow was great. I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book.
But I won't start the next book until my exams are done. I just squandered a very important day with reading. Stupid reading wanting all my time.(less)

There are so many deeper plot lines traversing this series that I can't just put it down! I need to read the next book already!
Notes to myself: Arista hiring Hadrian and Royce to take her to meet the Nationalists, they get trapped by the church. The Empress awakens slightly. A city is stolen. (less)
