The classic masked avenger of the golden pulp era brought forward and reimagined to the changed world he left behind. The series is titled 'Blood and Judgement' and does not disappoint. Spiegelman's stark black-and-white 'Maus' masterpiece with its haunting and evocative images - a desperate warning to future generations - is mirrored, and somewhat updated in this secondary masterpiece. I hesitated buying this, having thumbed through it before during other anniversaries of September 11, 2001, having had enough of the horrors of that day and it's after-effects.
I found that I wanted to continue to remember, to continue to help others - especially my kids - understand what happened and to fight the fear and hatred before, during and after that dark day. Spiegelman's translation of his fear and the reactions witnessed on that day into comix format is garish as anything imaginable, yet brought to an amazingly understanding and personal level in the comforting pages of the comic section. Biting government commentary is well done in direct, pull-no-punches jabs to the Bush administration of the day, and their misguided efforts to go to war in Iraq instead of getting the job done in Afghanistan.
