The storyline is one that I have not seen before in the SW Universe where the Empire (or rather Sith) and the Republic have to come together to fight a common enemy. This may have happened later in the Yuuzhan Vong crisis, but I read those so long ago that I do not remember.
The characters are well written, except for the Jedi Padawan, Shigar Konshi. I did not ever get the sense that he had any real skills with a lightsaber or the Force. He did hold his own in a small skirmish with Darth Chratis (pictured on the cover), but it was not a full on Jedi vs. Sith battle.
The battle sequences were decent, but not the best that have been put to paper. And there were not that many of those within the 400+ pages.
This is not my favorite Star Wars book, but I will read it again when it comes out in paperback next year....more

ThisThis is a collection of the original Tales of the Jedi comics. It tells the story of Gav and Jori Daragon and their tales of hyperspace mapping. This story takes place 5,000 Before the Battle of Yavin (at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope). Hyperspace travel is brand new, and courageous starship travelers would map safe routes and be paid on how useful any one route was to get from one end of the galaxy to the other.
The Daragon siblings were up to their eyeballs in debt and one of their routes caused the destruction of a lot of cargo to a powerful merchant. He wanted the sibling to pay for his losses with their lives. So in a scramble to get out of the system, they randomly set their navcomputer and jump tot he planet Korriban.
Korriban is the home of the powerful Sith empire. They are mourning the loss of their leader Marka Ragnos. The leadership of the Sith empire is split between two Sith who hate each other, Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh. They fight over the leadership of the Sith empire and come to an impasse when the spirit of Ragnos declares that only the most powerful Sith is fit to lead the Empire.
The Daragon's are caught and kept hostage while their presence further splits the Sith. Kressh believes that they are part of a pre-invasion force, but Sadow believes that they are the key to further Sith expansion and galaxy domination.
This is the first series of event that occur in the Star Wars universe. It sets the stage for the Sith v. Republic battles that will take place over the next 5,000 years. We are introduced to many of the ancient Jedi and Sith that we continuously read about in the Star Wars universe. We see lightsabers that require powerpacks, and ancient Coruscant on its way to becoming the citywide planet that are familiar with, and ancient Jedi that all of the Masters we know had to learn from. It is an awesome introduction into the Star Wars history....more
