Comments: Aaaahhhhh... nice to be back w/ the Prey series. Never stopped liking it, just so many books, so little time and trying to make way for new authors. Darn to all those well-meaning friends, conventions and indy bookstore sellers who just had to introduce me to so many other books/authors -- LOL. I'm trying to revisit some of my older faves -- and happy to say I didn't feel like a decade had passed since my last read & hoping I will not wait another for the next one in the series. In this entry, art history professor takes photos of women and places them on x-rated images...eventually needing further excitement he kills his "chosen" women -- usually of a type -- blonde, young, living alone and usually somehow related to the arts. 5/A(less)

There was only the tocking of the Pinocchio clock, the scratch of my pen, & the hiss of the air-conditioning fighting a terrible heat
Several years back, Elvis Cole was hired by an attorney to prove w/ video evidence that Lionel Byrd could not have killed Yvonne Bennet because he was in another part of town in a bar. When Byrd turns up dead, appearing as a suicide, w/ a photo album of 7 murder victims (all unsolved cases) including Yvonne Bennett -- it seems Elvis may have cleared the wrong man. Complex, layered plot -- great writing & of course I LOVE Elvis Cole & Joe Pike. Hope this series keeps on & on.(less)

TIME/PLACE: 1860's/Canada CHARACTERS: Mrs. Angus Ross -- mother of Francis 17-yr-old accused of killing Laurent Jammet FIRST LINES: The last time I saw Laurent Jammet, he was in Scott's store w/ a dead wolf over his shoulder.
COMMENTS:07/21/08 rec via bookcrossing ring/ray; Loved this one. I immediately was transported to the cold and open country of Caulfield along the Dove River in Canada, where the residents are isolated not only by open space between their current residences but also by the distance from their homelands, most are immigrants from Scotland. The Company -- Hudson Bay Trading Company -- is a major force in the area and controls the trappers and traders. When Laurent Jammet, a trapper, is murdered his 17-yr-old young friend Francis disappears. The authorities are ready to assume he is responsible for Jammet's death. His mother, Mrs. Ross, finds a guide familar w/ the territory and sets out to find her son and clear his name. Layered storylines and beautiful writing. Hope Stef Penney writes more!(less)

COMMENTS: 01/24/08 rec via bookcrsossing/ring-ray. Four friends refer to themselves as the gang of four. They are in their later 40's/early 50's and each seems to be well established in their respective careers -- Isabel the mayor, Sally an art teacher, Robin the lawyer and Grace a nurse. Isabel's mother has recently passed and left her a small inheritance. She decides to use it to trace her mother's European travels when she was in a dance troupe in the early 1950's. At this time Isabel a young child was living w/ her grandparents. She decides she needs a year of her own. The others think this is a bit odd but soon each find a reason for transition. Sally has a secret she's been keeping for almost 30 yrs and decides to go to San Francisco come to terms w/ this. Robin decides it's time for some self discovery and to break away from a clandestine relationship she's been having w/ a married judge. Grace, always in control and caring for her family, finds herself facing a new phase when her son & family moves to Japan. She's now really on her own and travels to the UK for a quiliting arts seminar. I found Isabel's story the least compelling, nevertheless, I really enjoyed my time spent w/ the gang of four.(less)

A disfigured body is found in the railyard. Inspector Imanishi has to discover who the victim is as well as the murderer. When the victim is identified as a retired policeman and one who everyone loved, the case becomes very important and many off-hours and personal travel time is spent on the investigation. This murder seems to have connections to a series of deaths in the nouveau group -- an up & coming group of artists, musicians, writers. (less)

Charming characters, delightful sense of place, entertaining humor and a plot w/ twists that will keep you guessing until the end. Toby, is a young man just getting started in his career -- his best friends from childhood are Hollywood stars Brogan and Rita. He is handling their adoption which started out smoothly until the birth mother goes missing and the baby is kidnapped. LOVED IT!!

TIME/PLACE: 1926/NY CHARACTERS: William Barker/banker
FIRST LINES: William was just the sort of hard-working, devoted man often found in the New York of 1925
COMMENTS: I really enjoyed this book -- won on goodreads. Nice surprise to win a great read! I was captured from the start and immersed in the mid-1920's era in the NY City area. Immediately liked William and felt sorry for him living w/ Helen the shrew of his wife. William's life drastically changes after a very tragic accident and he finds himself working for a traveling carnival. Again, very descriptive depiction of this life and the varied characters. Here, William feels at home after thinking he lost everything and would never fit in anywhere. Recommend!

FIRST LINES: Two dead men changed the course of my life that fall.
COMMENTS: Sue Grafton is still a great read for me. Despite it taking me a while to finish -- I think my not feeling well was more at fault than the book content -- I really enjoyed this 23rd entry in the Alphabet series. As mentioned in the 1st line -- 2 men of seeming little importance to Kinsey really changed her perspective. R.T. Dace is a homeless man found dead by the beach -- she is contacted since her name & # is listed as his next of kin contact. She finds out even tho' he has 3 adult children, they are estranged & she is a distant relative. She is related to him on her father's side -- she knows little of this part of her family background. Pete Wolinsky, another local PI is murdered late that summer -- someone Kinsey worked w/ briefly when she started out. He was not a man of integrity when it came to business & someone Kinsey really had little contact w/ but his death is somehow related to R.T. Dace and she gets another view of him through his widow.
