FIRST LINES: "Judith McMonigle Flynn winced, flinched, & grimaced as she held the phone as far as possible from her ear. Cousin Renie was screaming obscenities at the other end & throwing in an occasional death threat. Unable to listen any longer, Judith severed the connection. COMMENTS: This is a fun series I have been reading for years & have not tired of. It is a cozy mystery but beware the humor can be caustic. Judith & especially Renie don't pull any punches in telling it like it is! This entry is away from their home in the Northwest Pacific and set in San Francisco. Renie's account, Cruz Cruise lines has relocated to San Francisco and she has been invited on a 1930-s themed cruise to the South Pacific. Her husband Bill is detained w/ an emergency case and Judith takes his place. At the pre-launch party the 1st body shows up canceling the cruise. Judith & Renie become friends w/ a couple Rhoda & Rick (ala Nick & Nora) that are also amateur sleuths. Their combined efforts solve the mystery of the 3 murders. The plot/puzzle did keep me guessing until the end. This was a very fun romp and reminds me why I enjoy the series. Hopefully it won't be too long until I visit w/ the cousins again. (less)

FIRST LINES: Two dead men changed the course of my life that fall.
COMMENTS: Sue Grafton is still a great read for me. Despite it taking me a while to finish -- I think my not feeling well was more at fault than the book content -- I really enjoyed this 23rd entry in the Alphabet series. As mentioned in the 1st line -- 2 men of seeming little importance to Kinsey really changed her perspective. R.T. Dace is a homeless man found dead by the beach -- she is contacted since her name & # is listed as his next of kin contact. She finds out even tho' he has 3 adult children, they are estranged & she is a distant relative. She is related to him on her father's side -- she knows little of this part of her family background. Pete Wolinsky, another local PI is murdered late that summer -- someone Kinsey worked w/ briefly when she started out. He was not a man of integrity when it came to business & someone Kinsey really had little contact w/ but his death is somehow related to R.T. Dace and she gets another view of him through his widow. Stephanie is killed and Scott is severly injured. He is offered full medical leave but opts for the canine unit and is determined to find his partner's killers. He is paired up w/ Maggie -- a former military working dog who survived several tours of the middle east, unfortunately her pack/partner did not survive. These 2 share physical and emotional wounds and help ea other not only get thru each day but to excel as a team. Robert Crais is a sure thing for me!(less)

SERIES/STAND ALONE: #9 in Women's Murder Club TIME/PLACE: Present/San Francisco CHARACTERS: Detective Lindsay Boxer; Journalist Cindy; Coroner Claire & Lawyer Yuki FIRST LINES: Sara Wells stood on the roof of the carport & snaked her gloved hand through the hole she'd cut in the glass. Her pulse was thuddding in her ears as she unlocked the double-hung window, opened the sash, & slid quietly into the darkened room. COMMENTS: What does it take to cross the line into over-the-top violence & make me not want to read ... well apparently the awfulness of killing young mothers & babies didn't do it since I read the whole thing. Of course, I thought these crimes were really in the worst taste but darned if I just had to keep reading to find out why, why, why. Can't say that there was any reason that would make it OK but just had to know what motivated this insane killer. Kept me turning the pages and liked the alternating story of "Hello Kitty" the cat burgler. And of course there is the familiarity w/ the women characters form reading 8 previous books. Yes, there is over-the-top drama & angst but I expect it, so I tolerate it. I will continue reading this series for a quick escapist read. (less)

OUTLAWS by T. Jefferson Parker RATING: 4.5/B+ GENRE/PUB DATE/# OF PGS: Mystery/2007/369 pgs SERIES/STAND ALONE: Stand Alone TIME/PLACE: Present/Southern California CHARACTERS: Allison Murieta/outlaw AKA Suzanne Jones/history teacher; Charles Hood/policeman FIRST LINES: Here's the deal: I am a direct descendant of the outlaw Joaquin Murrieta.
COMMENTS: Love T. Jefferson Parker and this one did not disappoint! Linking the legend of a Latin bandido, Joaquin Murietta to his descendant the modern day outlaw, Allison Murietta, made for a unique story. Allison robs fast food restaurants as a personal vendetta against poor management choices when she worked for KFC as a teen. She also is adept at stealing autos. Some of the $ she puts away for her family of 3 sons. Some of the $ she gives back to causes/charities she finds worthy. For her alter ego Suzanne it is honorable to teach history -- for the outlaw Allison she must make history. When Allison hears about a big diamond transaction she plans to get her hands on these. Barry owes $75,000 in gambling debts & he can't get a hold of the cash but thru work he can get $450,000 retail/$45,000 black market diamonds and sets up a meet to pay off his debt. (less)

COMMENTS: library book. Two storylines keep you turning the pages. The teenage son of recent governor is missing. He has a congenital heart defect and he has been highlighted in the media over the years. Another "hot" case in the San Francisco area are the serial arsons taking place in upper-end homes that include taking the lives of the owners. Good suspense.(less)

FIRST LINES: I don't want to think about the predators in this world.
COMMENTS: library book. Kinsey has a new ride, her bug was totaled in the last book & she's now in a mustang. It's still 1987 but the issues are very current: identity theft, elder abuse. When her neighbor Gus hurts his shoulder he needs assistance when he comes home from rehab. His only living relative is his niece living in NY. She does come out for a brief visit but asks Kinsey to screen the health care worker. The preliminary screening is clear but shortly thereafter Kinsey notices Gus is never available to talk to and Solana Rojas, the LVN has given Kinsey cause to believe she's here for her benefit & not for Gus. Additionally, Kinsey is researching an auto accident that may be an insurance scam. (less)
