TIME/PLACE: Present/UK, US, Australia CHARACTERS: Four train travelers making a journey from Edinburgh to London
FIRST LINES: I think that's a fishing boat. It was He saw it from the train, but not for more than a minute or 2, as the line followed that bit of coastline only for a short time before it suddenly swerved off, as railway lines will do.
COMMENTS: Charming story of 4 different travelers and their stories of love connected to trains. A young Scotsman who is working in an art auction & discovers a steam train in a painting that was created before the existence of steam trains -- and how he meets a young woman he works w/. A middle-aged Australian woman tells of how her parents met -- her father ran a railroad siding in the Outback. An American man sees 2 young men parting on a train & recalls a male friendship he had. An Englishman gets off at the wrong train station and meets a woman. Lovely, timeless tales of how these various couples met. (less)

TIME/PLACE: Present/Indiana CHARACTERS: Hazel Grace/17-yr-old w/ thyroid cancer; Augustus Waters/bone cancer
FIRST LINES: Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over & over, ate infrequently, & devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time to thinking about death.
COMMENTS: Loved this book! Hazel Grace & Augustus Waters meet @ a cancer support group. Gus is in remission after losing a leg and is there to support his friend Isaac. Hazel is distant @ 1st not wanting Gus to go through getting attached to her only to lose her when her cancer wins. They share their favorite books and become friends. There is so much more to this story … but w/o giving away details -- these are characters that you will just love their perspectives and humor and not want to leave them even when you have turned the last page. FIRST LINES: The pilot's voice on the Alitalia flight to Paris from Milan work Timmie from a brief nap.
COMMENTS: Pretty much typical Danielle Steel…if you are expecting to escape into a fast read w/ a glimpse into a glamorous lifestyle/setting and meeting characters who struggle w/ overcoming tragedy both past & present then this is another D. Steele book you will like. Timmie O'Neill was orphaned @ 5 yrs old and left the orphanage @ 16 to strike out on her own. She built an Int'l Fashion Empire. Professional has usually trumped Personal and @ age 48 she seems to be on top w/ her business but has little in the way of family or love life. She has various tragedies to overcome and wants to concentrate on what is positive in her life -- her fashion world. And… what man wants such an independent , successful, savvy woman… so far all she meets are glorified boy toys. When she becomes ill while in Paris she is taken care of by a physician…neither is expecting more than a doctor-patient relationship … (less)

TIME/PLACE: Present/Miami CHARACTERS: Seth Weinstein/groom; Tina Clark/bride; Trevor/Orangutan
FIRST LINES: Two days before his wedding, Seth was in a cab w/ his best man, Marty, advising him on the responsibilities of the groom.
COMMENTS: A fun whacky Florida romp. Seth is an average, not very ambitious guy marrying a woman way out of his league -- she is an over-achiever and her family is mega wealthy. They live in the NE but are having a wedding extravaganza in Key Biscayne, FL. From the moment of arrival…nothing goes quite as planned despite the excessive amount of time & money spent on a wedding planner. A few hilarious situations involve: an orangutan named Trevor escaped from Primate Adventure; parents of the groom who unknowingly share their medical marijuana brownies at the rehearsal dinner: an albino python named Blossom; a Haitian family who illegally arrive on Key Biscayne and become guests of the groom…well read the book for more.

COMMENTS: Every D Steel book is a connection to my mother -- she loved her books, so there is always a fondness for me when I pick up her latest book & think my mother would have enjoyed this one if she were still here. Olivia Grayson has been a driven & dedicated entrepreneur for all of her life. She started w/ a family hardware business of one store and grew it into a very successful group of international design stores. She had a very supportive husband and mother who were able to be there at home for the family when work priorites prevailed. She felt she was balancing her priorities and made the right choices. We sold over 40 copies of the book, which was very pleasant, but much more thrilling from my standpoint was the food. Susan managed to procure ration coupons for icing sugar & real eggs for the meringue. COMMENTS: What a delight! So glad I finally took this down from my shelf. Loved the era and setting, but most of all loved the bonding through books and letters. This is an epistolary novel. When residents of the Channel Island, Guernsey, were occupied by the Germans they formed a book club to not only communicate but to transcend their current restrictive life and allow them hope that this period shall eventually pass. After the war ends, one of the residents has a book w/ the name of a writer in London in it and is curious if she knows more about this particular author -- thus the correspondence begins between Juliet Ashton and the Guernsey residents.(less)
