I'm not getting married.
COMMENTS: 06/12 rec as bookcrossing ring/ray. Manny (Manrit) is 13 yrs old and is dreading his 17th birthday. The day he will be married -- prearranged by his parents in the Punjabi way. He lives in the UK w/ his family. They all seem to have more ties to the Indian culture than he does. Manny, wants no part of this and rebels. He distances himself from his family & ethnic background, develops a forbidden relationship w/ an English girl but his father and brothers are still determined to fit him into their ways. He is even left in India w/ relatives, however, it is here that he connects w/ the black sheep uncle and strengthens his plans for independence. We really only had Manny's viewpoint and his family for the most part were portrayed w/ a narrow perspective. However, still an enjoyable read and was happy to see Manny ultimately accepted more responsibility for his decisions, even if in hindsight -- his choice for independence was positive but he lacked senstivity for some of the innocent future inlaws, etc. (less)

We sold over 40 copies of the book, which was very pleasant, but much more thrilling from my standpoint was the food. Susan managed to procure ration coupons for icing sugar & real eggs for the meringue. COMMENTS: What a delight! So glad I finally took this down from my shelf. Loved the era and setting, but most of all loved the bonding through books and letters. This is an epistolary novel. When residents of the Channel Island, Guernsey, were occupied by the Germans they formed a book club to not only communicate but to transcend their current restrictive life and allow them hope that this period shall eventually pass. After the war ends, one of the residents has a book w/ the name of a writer in London in it and is curious if she knows more about this particular author -- thus the correspondence begins between Juliet Ashton and the Guernsey residents.(less)

Her husband, Leon is also at a crossroads and feels he's peaked in his engineering career. Marilyn & Leon are growing apart. While Leon is on a soul searching trip in Costa Rica Marilyn is dealing w/ her mother-in-law's elopement and her mother's failing memory. TIME/PLACE: 2001/Indiana CHARACTERS: Sylvie Bennet/marketing director Jewelry Design Business; Marcus Grey/Entrepreneur
FIRST LINES: Sylvie Bennett closed the door of 4A & headed down the stairs of her apartment building @ 20 Amber Court.
COMMENTS: Quick, light romance read. Altho' part of a miniseries -- believe there are 3 other books focusing on 3 other young women also living @ Amber Court and working @ Colette Jewelry -- this definitely stands alone. Sylvie, is a very focused business woman and loves her job and feels her co-workers are her family. She is on a mission to stop Marcus Grey from destroying Colette Jewelery. Marcus Grey is a self-made man and for years he has believed his father's Jewelry business was destroyed by Colette & is out to make things right. The 2 seem to have different objectives but are very attracted to each other -- they each have to find a meeting ground before they can come to terms w/ both their working & personal relationships. COMMENTS: 11/30 rec ARC via bookmooch, upcoming group read for MOTB. Moved so did not attend book club discussion but glad the book was recommended. Spy thrillers are usually not my choices but I very much enjoyed this one. I did not find it overly technical, political and it was easy for me to follow. John Wells has been undercover so long w/ the Taliban in Afghanistan the US is not sure whether he has turned or not. It appears that both sides are putting him to the test to determine where his loyalty is.(less)

COMMENTS: library book. Another fine entry in the Hamish Macbeth series! There's a newcomer who is dominating the bar conversations, bragging and telling stories of his world travels as a professional wrestler. This macho man has started some fights at the pubs and is suspect of having affairs w/ some of the local women. No one is overly fond of him but would they go so far as to murder him?(less)
