Mr. Schmidt has a fantastic ability to deal with very real, difficult situations (abuse, bullying, the treatment of soldiers after returning from Vietnam) without being too heavy handed or depressing. In fact, this book shows how the kindness of a few adults in a young man's life can change him and his family forever. This is a great book that I plan on sharing with my kids when they are junior high age. (less)

A good read aloud for young kids. I can see elements in it that are developed further in Tolkien's greater works. Farmer Giles is a man but he could easily have been a hobbit. (less)

I'm so impressed with the author's ability to weave the lives of six saints into her own personal story. I found the story of her father's long struggle with Alzheimer's, her personal challenge of infertility, and her struggle to discover what it really means to be feminine gripping and was fascinated by how she one-by-one discovered amazing woman saints who were just the guide that she needed at that point in her life. I learned so much from this book and at the same time found it hard to put down, the mark of a very skilled writer in my opinion. I have no doubt that I will be soon diving into books to learn more about St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese, St. Edith Stein and all the rest. I can't recommend this book highly enough!(less)

I read the sections about the books I've read, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and skipped the parts on his other works. It was a fascinating book though almost too academic for me. I enjoyed the philology and the information on the medieval works that influenced Tolkien as well as the in depth look into the nature of evil in Middle Earth. (less)

It tackles some pretty heavy themes, but in a way that is hopeful and inspiring instead of depressing. As we read we had a number of wonderful discussions about kindness, greed, sacrifice and love. This was such a sweet book without being overly sentimental and I'm sure that it will be re-read in our household more than once. (less)

The characters are interesting and complex, the setting of London during the blitz is fascinating and there are some great plot twists. (less)

Actually, I probably would not have appreciated her when I was younger so I'm thankful that I finally discovered her in my 30s. (less)

Each chapter is topical and I found some topics more relevant to me than others, but overall it was well done. I especially appreciated the honesty about some of their personal struggles in the afterword. (less)
