I don't particularly care for the potty-mouthed tone of the Skinny Bitch book series, but I went ahead and bought this one anyway because at the moment there aren't any other books on vegan pregnancy. Sayward Rehbal is publishing one through Herbivore this spring that I think will probably be more of what I was hoping for with this one.
Here's the thing: this is a nutrition book for pregnancy, not an all-encompassing book about pregnancy. That's fine, and if you're one of those who is still eating animal products, this is a great, great, great book for you. However, I already knew the information found in over half of the book. The chapter on sugar and the sample menus were helpful. I also found some good info in a few of the shorter chapters at the back of the book.
I found the writing to be repetitive and a bit stale in places. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get it. You've already mentioned thing x and thing y on over other page. Enough, already. I also think the authors seemed to be trying to hard with the wording in some places. I don't particularly want to read a pregnancy nutrition book full of cursing. Get over yourselves, already. I felt like it undermined some of the great information and facts found in the book. All of the sources are listed in the back of the book, so maybe it's a better idea to just read some things from the original source material so I don't feel like I'm listening to some educated, trailer park teenager.
If you're already vegan and looking for a book on pregnancy, you could probably get away with just flipping through one of these in the store or borrowing it from the library. If you're still an omnivore, then I definitely think you should read this. It won't feel like old hat to you. (less)

I actually think this book would be great for anyone who's pregnant, not just vegans. The first few chapters detail specific nutrients that a woman needs more of when pregnant and goes into what it's for and what foods you can get it from the easiest. There is also information about supplementing nutrients and what you need to make sure your prenatal contains. Really great information.
For the pregnant vegans, there's a chapter all about the questions people will probably ask you along with tips on how to deal with certain social situations as a vegan. Some of this is best for new vegans because anyone who has been living this way for a while already has most of it figured out, but still good info.
There are a few chapters on what to expect during each trimester, during labor, breast feeding and that sort, which is par for the course for pregnancy books. The last bit of the book contains recipes that are relatively easy and quick and nutritious for various meals. That's pretty great for those people trying to pack more vitamins and minerals into their normal diet to accommodate the growing baby.(less)

I find myself thinking about it when I'm not reading.
I read this entire book in two days. It's a quick read and a really good one. It doesn't feel like a YA novel, either. (less)

The first part was a little slow for me. I kept reading because this book was so highly recommended. Don't get me wrong, I did find it interesting, there just wasn't a lot going on for the first bit. Once the second part of the book starts, everything gets incredibly interesting. At this point I didn't want to put the book down. I stayed up way too late a few nights in a row reading this because I was so into it. The first part, though slow, did give a good bit of background information for what was happening in the rest of the story.
I hear there's a movie being made of this book. I'm curious to see how that turns out. I'd definitely recommend reading this one. I quite enjoyed it. (less)

I would pretty much spend my days waiting until I could find some time to read again. There were a few new characters, a few characters that I previously liked that now I don't and a few that I previously didn't like that now I do. Lots of twists and turns and unexpected things happened. Love it. I can't wait to read the next one.(less)

This series is so rich and nuanced and interesting that I don't even realize it's a YA novel. If you're already a fan of reading supernatural fiction, you'll like this. I can't wait for the next one to come out!(less)

The first few books were really great but they keep getting sillier and sillier as the story progresses. Okay, to be fair, these are YA novels and I'm a thirtysomething woman, so I'm not exactly the audience they're going for here. I can actually see why teenagers would like these books. Heck, I'm still reading them, too. I do enjoy the characters and the story for the most part, but I keep hoping the books will get a bit better again. I'll probably still read the next ones since I've already invested this much in the series.(less)

I was disappointed with the last three in this series. I felt they were really lackluster and kind of boring and contrived in places. I saw a review from someone else saying this book was much, much better than those and that's why I gave it a chance. I'm really glad that I did.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait to start reading the next one. We're quite a few generations in the future from Phedre and Imriel at this point, this time telling the story of Moirin, one of the Maghuin Dhonn. How fun to add a little bit of magic into this series! I'm quite enjoying reading about her adventures from Alba to Terre D'Ange to Chi'in. Moirin is very likeable, a young woman just coming of age and trying to figure out her place in the world, following an internal calling to an as-yet unknown destiny. I find myself rooting for her, hoping things work out for the best and loving everything that happens along the way.
If you were disappointed with the three Imriel books in this series, give it another shot and pick this one up. I think you'll like it, I know I did.(less)
