Yes, I read the subtitle, but how often does this kind of killer turn out to be a public official? Fascinating, creepy, and the historical detail was all so interesting. Larson really brings 1893 Chicago, the World's Fair, and the devil himself to life.(less)

In a nutshell: animals need to able to express their natural behaviors. When we confine pets or domestic or wild animals in ways that don't allow that, we are injuring or neglecting them in important ways. Grandin goes through domestic animals one at a time, discussing their needs and behaviors, and then covers wild animals in a more general way. With each section I wondered "am I actually interested in cows, etc."? It turned out that I was because it was all interesting. And despite having seen seasons worth of the Dog Whisperer and having read numerous dog books, I ended up viewing my dogs differently because of this book. I have an insecure rescue dog with some annoying behavior, that Grandin explained perfectly. She confirmed my intuition about how to handle it and made me feel more compassionate about it. She also speaks as a scientist, not as someone making an emotional plea, which makes it all the more powerful.(less)

However it was fascinating for quite a while and raised questions that never would have occurred to me. I think a science geek might be enthralled.(less)

A fascinating look at architecture and the history of how people live. I loved the organization which is loosely organized around the rooms of a house. There are many divergent meandering paths taken from each room (I'm still waiting for The Attic to talk about "the attic")but it is forgiven because it is all so interesting and entertaining.(less)

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I sometimes lost track of who all the characters were, or found it hard to follow the story out of sequence, but it is a great story, was well written and continually raised important questions.
