I experienced a lot of emotions reading this, including horror and surprise, at some of the events that happen. In turn though, the way Sam and his friends react highlight the better aspects of human nature.
Some of the events that occur will have you in tears, some will make you generally angry and there are others that will leave you laughing (yes there are quite a few of those moments in there). Although aimed at a young adult audience, i'd be cautious around younger teens reading it, as i found some of it upsetting and i'm in my twenties. Having said that, it is an amazing book, written by a fantastic author.
To sum it up, this has everything a brilliant thriller/sci-fi ahould have: suspense, action, amazing and varied characters, some fantastic, yet strange, powers and even a little bit romance. In short, easily one of the best books i've read in a long time :-)(less)

A powerful tale of friendship, racism, judgement and the sheer unfairness of life is told through the innocent eyes of a child (Scout). Her simple yet innocent view of the world makes for a wonderful read and you can't help but agree with the points she makes about things, the fact of the matter is sometimes children say the most truthful things, but usually no one listens.
The main theme of the book, the Mockingbird, in used in several ways throughout, for several different characters and ending of the book is a brilliant lesson in morality delivered in a rather vivid and unforgettable way.
In short, this book is filled with memorable characters, some tear-jerking moments and a narrator you will laugh and sympathise with. Absolutely amazing novel!(less)

It was, however, one of the first i read, so i suppose i had only this to compare others to.
One of the things i liked about it was the fact the werewolf was female and totally confident and kick-ass, as apposed to male and constantly whining about being a werewolf. This has to be one of the first instances i've come across where being a wolf is a gift rather than a curse, something i found intruiging.
The plot is faced paced, heart-racing and has enough twists to put some other books to shame. And for once i didn't guess who was going to get the girl!
Word of warning: Do NOT watch the terrible film that is based on this. It sucks big time, and it totally got the story messed up!(less)

I found Tithe very realistic, which is not a common term used for a faerie story, but with the harsh human world meeting the even harsher Faerie world, it was easy the parallels. Just as there are evil humans, there are also evil faeries, only the faeries tend to have a more unique ways of being evil (it's not everyday you see someone attempt to torcher someone by having them dance all night).
I found the characters refreshingly different, too often you have a perfect heroin/hero who manages to do the right thing constantly. I prefer the type that make mistakes, make mistakes and learn from it. Kaye is one of those people, not perfect by any means, she makes a lot of choices that most people would question, but you can't help but admire her steely resolve and courage. I also loved Roiben's character, hes such an old-fashioned traditional type person and his manners and speech made me laugh in parts, and i can also see why Kaye would be attracted to him (cos let's face it, he does sound very nice lol)
All in all, a magical and romantic read for people in their late teens and upwards. Holly Black is honestly an amazing writer :-)(less)

This book managed to blend in all the things i love such as fantasy, romance, action, adventure and really cool supernatural beings, specifically werewolves!
To make this book even more appealing, it takes the form of a mystery part way through with the pack having to investigate killings among their own kind.
Elena, as a central character, is an interesting person to see the story through. Her independant and kick-ass attitude is refreshing among so many 'damsels in distress' that exist in a lot novels today (damsel in distress she definately isn't!). But at the same time we get to see her softer side as she tries to make choices relating to her future and to forgive the man who turned her into a werewolf.
