I love the fractured hate filled world that Talos and the first claw inhabit. They are comrades for centuries but you get the feeling that it's only because the right opportunity for betrayal hasn't come up yet.
The world of First claw is built on the world of the slaves they take and the somewhat twisted loyalties that the slaves develop with their Lords.
The flashbacks to Talos's origin story and the windows into his past and the other members of first claw provide are the most fascinating part of the story for me.
The Story Starts with the Nightlords in dire straits. Resource poor and battered. Hurting from their encounters with the Blood angels. They are drawn to the Maelstrom to negotiate for much needed repairs and there Talos meets Huron Blackheart, again. We find out that they didn't exactly part as BFF's the last time and right from the off we get the feeling that this is unlikely to build all that many bridges.
The story has some fantastic moments and the set pieces are very satisfying. But talking about them would be too much of a spoiler so I'll end with a reccommendation that this novel builds well on the previous books even if there are hints of "the difficult second Album" about aspects of the story....more

They aren't very merry and they don't seem to like each other a whole lot. The one thing most of them share is a love of money and a lack of moral scruples. Not the band you would collect together for a noble cause, but revenge isn't a noble cause.
So what do we have? New friends and old. If you've read the First Law Trilogy you'll recognise several characters and some corpses. Our old friend Shivers takes a trip to see the world and broaden his horizons. Our new friend Monzcarro Murcatto is a female mercenary general working for another old friend Grand Duke Orso of Talins. The book follows Murcatto's trail of vengeance after she "falls out" with Orso.
I love the way the author is happy to do horrible unexpected things to the characters in his books. It keeps the story alive and twisting when there are pretty major characters collapsed in pools of their own blood at strategic points in the book. Oh and the twisting in this book is everywhere. The characters views on the world and their place in in change, their loyalties... well I'd like to say they change but most of the characters are basicly loyal to themselves alone.
The story is about vengeance and it builds pace and has a really satisfying conclusion. The real reason to read it is the complex characters and a setting that feels like any number of European wars turned up to 11
If you are a fan you'll love it, if you haven't ready any of the authors work to date it's a good stand alone book but it's more satisfying to read it after the First Law Trilogy ...more

The way the various stories and characters intertwine and move on is facinating. That and knowing that none of them are actually safe makes for an edge to some of the situations that is missing in the books where you know certain characters are safe.
This book kicks off another Ghosts story arc and Dan does a really good job of ratcheting up the level of intregue and the feeling that it's actually all being put on the line this time.
If you are a fan you won't be dissapointed with this helping of combat and mayhem in the Danverse...more

Sure there is stuff afoot with evil plans, primarchs going all supermano et supermano, even another invasion of ultramar, all the cool chaos lords are doing it, but at least the Logar Aragon bromance are the first ones.
But do not lose sight of the real protagonist of the book, mr utter dwad, Erebus. If there is a chaos power dedicated to being a sick twisted manipulator..... oh wait never mind...more
