It has everything a mystery lover in me loves - secrets from the past that are slowly revealed.. and especially the way they are revealed, using books to decipher a coded book that one of the characters has been writing for a number of years.
This is an homage to all book lovers and such a great book to read. It makes you reflect on how much books have played a part in your life and the people around you. Especially those shared experiences.
There is plenty of mystery in this book - Chloe is after all after the truth and desperate to solve this code so that she can finally understand all of what Nate, her husband has been keeping from her all these years. I also label this as a contemporary because the wider story is really a family drama, about growing up and the choices and sacrifices we make for one another and ourselves.
I loved the way the story unfolded in every way. I loved the ending because it wasn't picture perfect (and it felt very 'real' in that sense) and yet it was very hopeful.
I can't recommend this one enough! For those who love books about books, family drama and secrets.. it really has something for almost everyone.

It wasn't quite as good as I thought it'd be..it was much more of a roundabout ghost story I think. There were times when it was definitely creepy and I wanted to know what would happen next but there just wasn't quite the pulse pounding angst of a truly great suspense novel.
I still think this was a good red it just didn't satisfy me in the way I wanted it too. Sort of like eating a meal that is missing a key spice or two and this tastes slightly bland.
I thought the facts about rooks were fascinating and I've always thought they were interesting ever since reading Americb Gods which if I remember right features a rook or two of its own.
I've had The Thirteenth Tale on my wish list forever and I still am eager to read that once the chance arises. :) (less)

Gah, I need the second book now! I guessed the big twist at the end before Sal figured it out, although like her, I didn't quite want to believe it. There were so many unexpected twists and turns throughout tho..and omg the creepiest children's book I've ever heard quoted from made this book even better. I seriously can't wait for the second book in the series..!!
I highly recommend this for mystery-lovers even if you're not into SciFi ish plots! this will suck you in! It's very approachable and had me turning the pages until I couldn't keep my eyes open. The only reason why it took me so long to finish was because I kept falling asleep before I'd even get to open the book! Which was really starting to irritate me. So, so good. When does the next book come out already?!(less)
