Honor is a Guild Hunter, still trying to heal from having been kidnapped and held for two months by vampires, having endured unspeakable tortures. When she is called on to work with the baddest badassed vampire around, she puts on her big-girl panties and sets out to do the job, but her emotional scars do not vanish.
Dmitri and Honor work the twin tracks of solving the murders of newly-formed vampires and finding the main party responsible for Honor's kidnapping. Dmitri is also trying to get Honor into his bed, while fighting off feelings he thought he had buried long ago. The biggest reveal, however, has nothing to do with either case. Honor's evolution from victim to survivor is not easy. which makes it more realistic. Dmitri's rediscovery of a humanity he had tried to lose is not easy either. There is a critical encounter between Dmitri and Honor which, if handled any differently, would have completely turned me off the story.
Where this series goes from here (Ilium, anyone?) only Nalini Singh knows, but I look forward to seeing what happens. ...more

In addition to finally seeing Hawke and Sienna get together, we get a bonus romance, which was hinted at in the previous book Play of Passion.
Sienna is a Cardinal X-Psy, which makes her one of a kind, even among Psy, and the ultimate weapon. As a result, her upbringing prior to defecting from PsyNet made her older than her years. Hawke is the alpha of the SnowDancer Changeling pack. His fated mate died while they were still children, and he refuses to open his heart to another. But his wolf really wants Sienna. They have to negotiate the terms of their relationship and the uncertainty if her growing powers, all while they and DarkRiver face escalating aggression from the Psy. There is a civil war brewing among the Psy, and the Changelings are in the crossfire.
The only resolutions offered in this book are Hawke & Sienna, the bonus romance, and Sascha has her baby. We still do not know who the Ghost is (though I have a guess), where the Arrows will fall, and how dire will this war get. ...more

This story continues the evolving relationship of Archangel Raphael and Guild Hunter-turned-angel Elena. They have returned to New York after the events in Beijing (Angel's Kiss). Unusual weather events and angels and vampires acting out of character herald the awakening of an Ancient angel - who also happens to be Raphael's mother. And mommy does not like her son's new consort.
There are also interesting developments with Elena's family (no, she and dad don't kiss and make up). Some of the Cadre also appear to be spooked by the waking Ancient, who would be more powerful than any of them, and possibly insane.
Singh has said the next book in the series, Archangel's Blade, will focus on Dmitri, but I sure would love to see more of Raphael and Elena! ...more

A lot of the stories featured some very nice beginnings of friendships, but I would hardly call them "romance".
A few highlights: "To Hell With Love", by Jackie Kessler - can love, once lost, be regained? The plot itself was secondary to the undercurrents between the main couple. It was a solid kick to the heart.
"Marine Biology", by Gail Carriger - wow. An in-the-closet gay, in-the closet Alpha werewolf, his merman wannabe lover, and dysfunctional shifter families (and a ghost) made for a hilarious and hot short story.
"Zola's Pride" - Moira Rogers - easily the hottest story in the collection, part of the Southern Arcana series, which just moved near the top of my TBR list. ...more
